February Check-in: Revisiting Talented 2027 Defenders

We've got so many talented prospects in Alabama to cover that sometimes we miss out on some of the prospects making the most noise.   That's no excuse, of course! So, we're starting a new Monthly Check-In series to revisit some of the talented prospects across the state who haven't gotten as much coverage as of late.   Today, we're specifically zoning in on some of the TALENTED defenders in our 2027 class. You won't want to miss out on these guys, so be sure to watch their film below!    [player_tooltip player_id='1610204' first='Jamaine' last='Lewis'] is a talented DL from Hueytown who's seen his recruitment grow a ton this past year.   “Lewis is a big dude who plays with some really impressive speed. He causes problems down the line of scrimmage and makes offenses work to do anything against him. Lewis has excellent pursuit skills; he makes some highlight reel sideline-to-sideline plays- it's seriously impressive watching him hunt down the ball carrier at his size.   Lewis is also terrific at holding his own in the trenches- he fights off blocks and completely dominates the OL across from him, consistently generating great penetration on the LOS. Lewis might be one of the top run defenders in our 2027 class. He causes so much trouble with how well he controls and dominates the line.“   Last week, Lewis added another offer to his list, this time from Samford!   We've been high on Lewis for a while now, and when you watch his tape, it'll make sense why. He's a talented DL with a big senior season ahead next fall. Be sure to check out his film below:      [player_tooltip player_id='1631191' first='Will' last='Abrams'] is one of the top LBs in the class and is coming off another impressive year for St. Paul's Episcopal.   “Abrams is incredibly athletic and can make sideline-to-sideline plays against the run and pass with ease- he plays with unreal pursuit and flies to the ball every snap, coming up with huge stops all over the field regardless of where he lines up pre-snap. It's incredibly impressive watching Abrams defend the run- he slips by blockers to fill in lanes and attack the ball carrier, consistently coming up with tackles for loss or little to no gain.   Abrams is also super reliable in coverage- he can cover a lot of space and is not a guy you want to throw at. He consistently delivers hard hits to pass catchers and uses his hands to break up and intercept passes. I was super impressed with Abrams' tape- he's an every-down playmaker at LB with tons of talent heading into a huge junior season.“   Since our last update, Abrams' recruitment has continued to soar, with offers from Michigan, Ole Miss, and several others.   Abrams is one of the top LBs in the state for good reason. He's a sideline-to-sideline weapon with some of the best film at the position you can find. Be sure to watch some of his tape below:      [player_tooltip player_id='1610196' first='Donovan' last='Verges'] is a talented LB/RB from Pell City who made a ton of big plays this past season.   "At ILB, Verges has excellent instincts and recognizes plays really well. He flies around the field and puts himself in a great position to make plays against the run and pass. Verges plays with a ton of speed and pursuit that allows him to thrive off the edge as a pass rusher. On tape, he completely overwhelms OL with his speed and makes huge plays in the backfield- affecting the quarterback and the run game.   One of the most impressive things I saw in Verges' tape were his run fits- he does an amazing job closing down rushing lanes and taking down the ball carrier at or behind the line of scrimmage- it is incredibly hard to run the ball against him."   Verges has had a busy February, listing new offers from Troy, Arkansas State, FIU, and more!   I think Verges has a huge senior year ahead of him next fall. He's a talented LB with some great film you can watch below, be sure to take a look.      [player_tooltip player_id='1610201' first='Marcus' last='Muse'] is a talented DL from Central Tuscaloosa who's coming off a huge season last fall.   “At 6'3 275, Muse has great size, speed, and strength that he uses to dominate the line of scrimmage. Muse is excellent at fighting off blockers to come up with huge stops- he's really quick, has a ton of power, and works his way around OL to make plays behind the line of scrimmage.   Muse is also terrific in pursuit- he has a high motor, plays with a ton of effort, and will work across the field to make hustle plays.“   Muse has had a busy month, picking up new offers from Chattanooga, UT Martin, and North Alabama!   I think Muse and Central Tuscaloosa have a really big year ahead in 2026. If you haven't watched Muse before, be sure to take a look at his film, you'll be impressed:      [player_tooltip player_id='1629686' first='Brandon' last='Marinho'] is a talented DL from Spanish Fort who had a breakout junior season this past fall.   "Marinho is a talented DE capable of making plays every down. He does an excellent job holding his own in the trenches and consistently fights off offensive linemen to close down rushing lanes and get to the RB.   I was just as impressed watching him rush the passer. He has great athleticism, active hands, and a high motor he uses to generate tons of pressure and dish out big hits on the QB. Overall, he's a really well-rounded DL with impressive athleticism, great instincts, and a high IQ. We all need to look out for him in 2026."   Since our last update, Marinho has added two more offers from ULM and Samford. With his talent, I think he'll have even more schools calling his way soon.
