<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The 2027 class continues to take shape, and a new wave of defensive talent has hit the updated rankings. In this breakdown, we take a closer look at the top defensive newcomers who are reshaping the landscape and positioning themselves among the state's rising prospects.</h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">6'5” 250 lb. DE that is a high ceiling prospect with great potential and upside as his game develops. A standout basketball player who made the jump to football, he brings a unique athletic profile and outstanding size/length that translates well to the edge position. His basketball skillset shows up in his natural movement skills, coordination, and body control. He flashes many key traits college programs look for including that 6'5” length, agility, and the change of direction in space. When working the edge or reacting to plays he shows good footwork and balance to redirect in pursuit. He shows strong pass rush upside with the frame and athleticism to continue adding strength and refining technique. While still developing from a technical standpoint, his overall tools and raw potential is landing him college attention holding seven D1 offers.</p>      <p class="text-gray-700">Saunders is a 6'6” 240 lb. attacking edge defender with a relentless motor in the Valley Christian defensive front. He's a force that plays fast and physical on every snap, consistently pursuing the ball and impacting plays well outside his initial alignment. A plus all-around athlete he's got great range, speed, and competitive toughness to make plays all over the field. Smart and efficient with his movement, he takes disciplined pursuit angles and limits wasted steps. Brings heavy/violent contact as a tackler and shows he can break down and be a reliable finisher in space. Length, physicality, and high football IQ allow him to be effective setting the edge against the run, holding his gap, and forcing plays back inside. A versatile pass rusher that uses his length and motor to collapse the pocket. Possesses both speed and power moves to disengage from blockers. He brings positional versatility to the defense with his ability to line up and be effective from multiple spots across different fronts. Possesses true three down ability displaying the range and instincts to be a forceful run stopper while also being able to make plays on the ball when dropping into coverage. Processes his reads and diagnoses plays quickly flowing well to the football and closing space with speed. Speed and short area burst allow him to shoot gaps inside the box and be a sideline to sideline playmaker when the ball goes to the perimeter. Delivers violent contact as a tackler, accelerating and driving through the ball carrier to finish to the ground. Carries four D1 offers into the offseason but should see that number on the rise.</p>      <p class="text-gray-700">Strong cover corner with good natural coverage instincts and skillset to stay in phase with receivers at all levels of the field. Sustains coverage against a wide route tree with smooth and controlled footwork from his backpedal to his transition. Accelerates with speed out of his turn and shows the ability to close space with the ball in the air. Disrupts throws at the catch point by playing through the hands of the receiver aggressively. Physical defender who shows great one on one open field tackling ability wrapping up and finishing tackles to the ground. A three year varsity starter, he has yet to pick up that initial college offer but would expect that to change as the recruiting cycle progresses into the offseason.</p>      <p class="text-gray-700">Scott is an explosive two-way playmaker for Oakland Tech at DB and WR. A gifted athlete with great all-around speed, game awareness, and natural instincts. He's quick and twitchy in the short area with the change of direction to mirror movement at the short/intermediate levels while carrying the top end speed to sustain coverage downfield. Plays with good pad level and bend allowing him to accelerate out of the break and plant and drive on the football. Instinctual with his movement and plays well with his eyes to anticipate ball location and put himself in position to be a difference maker. Possesses a natural ability to create explosive plays whether lined up in the secondary or out wide at receiver. Initial college offer from Sacramento State back in March.</p>
