MIAMI – The three-headed offensive attack of junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1909446' first='Davin' last='Davidson'], junior running back Connail Jackson and senior receiver Bo Odaniel paved the way Wednesday night for Sarasota Cardinal Mooney to roll to their second state football title.

With head coach Jared Clark and his staff making waves all season, the Cougars (14-1) scored early and often to hold off Jacksonville Bolles, 52-28, to capture the 2A Florida State High School Football title at Pitbull Stadium on the campus of Florida International University (FIU).

Jackson, who earned MVP honors, ran for 160 yards on 26 carries and scored four times. Davidson completed 14 of 16 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns, and Odaniel, who stole the receiving spotlight, had seven catches for 107 yards and three dynamic touchdowns.

“Great win for this program and for this team,” said Clark, who guided his alma mater to their second state title. “We have played like this all year – on both sides of the ball. Very proud of these young men and this coaching staff.”

The Cougars got the scoring started with 8:20 left in the opening quarter Davidson found Odaniel from 34 yards out and a 7-0 lead. Mason Jordan's point after was good.

The Bulldogs (13-2) came right back with 6:04 left as [player_tooltip player_id='212269' first='Jaden' last='Weatherly'] hooked up with Clemson commit [player_tooltip player_id='1206198' first='Naeem' last='Burroughs'] to tie the game at 7. From there, it was all Cardinal Mooney the rest of the first half.

With 3:11 left in the first quarter, Jackson ran it in from the three, but the point after was blocked, leaving the score at 13-7.

The Cougars extended their first half lead to 20-7 with 5:17 left when senior Devin Mignery, who came in for Davidson, found Odaniel from 16 yards out.

The Cougars extended the lead to 27-7 right before half when Jackson took it in from the eight with :18 remaining.

The Cougars dominated the first half with 17 first downs, 141 yards rushing, 153 yards passing and 294 total yards.

The Bulldogs took the second half kickoff and moved down to cut the lead to 27-14 with 8:18 left in the third quarter when Burroughs took a pass from Weatherly from 15 yards out, but Cardinal Mooney continued to put the pressure on.

Jackson's third touchdown of the game – from the 1 with 5:28 remaining in the quarter – extended the lead to 34-14.

Bolles stayed right with the Cougars by cutting the lead back to 13 with 1:35 left in the third quarter when senior [player_tooltip player_id='212265' first='Simeon' last='Caldwell'] took off 71 yards on a fake punt for a score, but that would be it.

The fourth quarter belonged to Cougars when Odaniel caught his third scoring pass of the game with 11:55 left from 24 yards, and Jackson's fourth scoring run of the contest with 10:55 remaining from five yards out for the 46-21 final.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

While standout sophomore running back [player_tooltip player_id='1153040' first='Xander' last='Edwards'] didn't score a touchdown, he did have 94 tough yards on 21 carries.

Weatherly was 12 of 18 for 134 yards and three scoring strikes.

Defensively, Caldwell led the way with 13 tackles, Keyaan Nasir finished with 10, sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='547812' first='Asher' last='Ghioto'] ended the game with five tackles – as did Santana Starks.

It was a huge night offensively and defensively for the Cougars. Besides Jackson, Mignery ran for 80 yards and a touchdown. He was four of five passing for 46 yards.

While Odaniel had his huge game, senior [player_tooltip player_id='1759688' first='Kymistrii' last='Young'] caught five balls for 52 yards and Jordan ended with three receptions for 51 yards.

On defense, Cardinal Mooney was impressive – with K.J. Brown (9 tackles, 0.5 sacks), Notre Dame signee [player_tooltip player_id='1247568' first='Elijah' last='Golden'] (7 tackles, 2.5 sacks), Tra'vion Lester (7 tackles, 1.5 sacks) and Liberty University commit [player_tooltip player_id='1583347' first='Macaiden' last='Brown'] (6 tackles) led the way.
