While there were several headlines in the first three days of the state football championships at Pitbull Stadium on the campus of Florida International University, Palm Beach County certainly made plenty of news.

After winning the 1A state championship on Thursday in upset fashion against Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman set the tone for West Boca Raton on Friday afternoon.

The defending 6A state champions showed why they were one of the best teams in the state with a convincing 31-0 win against West Broward, who was making its first ever trip to the state finals.

For the second year in a row, head coach Dylan Potts and his Bulls (13-2) came away with a state crown.

Even though they dropped close games this season to Cardinal Newman (26-20, OT) and Bergen Catholic, New Jersey (21-14), the Bulls shook it off and won their last seven games.

University of Miami signee [player_tooltip player_id='283745' first='Javian' last='Mallory'] ran 126 yards and scored three times and the Bulls' defense suffocated the high-powered Bobcats all day long.

For coach Potts, the repeat was nice, but he felt that by the end of the season, his team was one of the best in the country.

“These players and coaches got better every week and we knew that by the end of the season we would be playing our best football,” said Potts. “Next Monday, we start our work on getting back here again next December with some quality talent returning,” Potts explained. “We also need to get all of our seniors placed.”

After a scoreless first quarter, the Bulls took a 7-0 lead with 8:04 left in the second quarter when Mallory grabbed a direct snap and went 50 yards for a 7-0 lead.

West Boca came right back to take a 14-0 lead when [player_tooltip player_id='900504' first='Damari' last='Jerry'] forced a fumble and Tray Mitchell went 39 yards for a score with 5:35 left.

The Bulls capped off the first half scoring on the last play when Tristan Lamb drilled a 37-yard field goal for a 17-0 advantage.

Mallory's second score of the game came on the opening drive of the second half when he took it from the 1 with 5:56 left for a 24-0 lead.

Mallory's final score of the game came with 9:09 left from the 6 for the 31-0 advantage.

BY THE NUMBERS

Statistically, Brandin Mincey finished 14 of 22 for 223 yards for West Broward. He also ran for 22 yards.

Sophomore Ratavian McReed caught three balls for 82 yards and freshman [player_tooltip player_id='2075135' first='Kedarius' last='Rhaney'] caught three passes for 44 yards.

Sophomore Amir Sears had nine tackles, sophomore Saban McCloud had eight tackles, and Jason Farfan ended with 5 tackles.

The Bulls dominated on defense with junior [player_tooltip player_id='1681579' first='Maxwell' last='Reid'] (14 tackles), [player_tooltip player_id='900504' first='Damari' last='Jerry'] (6 tackles) and Amari Ford had five tackles. Greg Edmond had 2 sacks, and junior [player_tooltip player_id='1671124' first='Jamar' last='Thompson'], [player_tooltip player_id='1158088' first='Demetrius' last='Geathers'] and senior Christopher Medina all had one sack.
