Cornerback and safety positions are among the harder positions to transition to at the varsity level. Understanding leverages, angles, alignment and assignments let alone just physically playing and executing. A mistake can easily end up in a touchdown regardless of where the offense is on the field. Today I evaluate 5 sophomores who have not only transitioned they've played really well. So let's get into it!

Gibson is a versatile defensive back who can play safety and corner. He also plays gunner on the varsity punt team. When you watch his film you see a very instinctive player who anticipates really well where the ball is going and has the ball skills to make interceptions and turn the offense over. Athletically he's explosive and has hips on a swivel. Gibson already has 5 offers from Power 5 schools such as PITT, Cincinnati, and Indiana.

Shipp Jr. is a defensive back that I think projects as a Strong Safety at the college level. He plays a physical brand of football. Dante is explosive in his breaks. Whether it's in the run game or in coverage Shipp is a violent striker. He's always looking to make the big hit. So receivers better have their heads on a swivel when Dante's in the neighborhood. He has the athleticism to match up well in man to man coverage. Dante has early offers from Miami (OH) and Cincinnati.

Chaney plus both sides of the ball for the Generals. Where I really think he really shines is on the defensive side where he plays cornerback. Cameron's length and ball skills pop off the screen. For a taller defensive back, Chaney is really fluid and mirrors smaller receivers well. While I think he's a fine corner, where I really like and project him to is the free safety position. I think he came be a rangy playmaker in the run and pass games. I could also see him grow into a hybrid linebacker depending on how he continues to develop.

When I watch Norvell Jr. play the corner position one thing comes to mind and that's smooth. His back pedal and turn and run are fluid and effortless. He tracks the ball well and has the body control and ball skills to win the 50-50 balls. He's not afraid to come up and put his body on the line in the running game.

Schafer is a safety with great instincts and ball skills. He gets great breaks on the ball when it goes into the air. He has the hands and athleticism to make difficult plays on the ball and interceptions. Once he has the ball in his hands in the open field he has the speed and athleticism to take the ball to the house. Luke is isn't afraid to mix it up in the run game as well.
