All across the state, we've seen sophomores step up in big ways and play key roles on prominent varsity teams. I've found a collection of some of the best 5A 2028 prospects, most of whom saw significant varsity time last season. Get ready to meet the future of Minnesota football!

A starter in the trenches for a state-qualifying team as only a sophomore, Johnson is someone who I think has the potential to rise among the top OL in the state. Early on in Johnson's tape, you get a sense for his style of play. He's a physical run blocker who can blow up a defender on pulls. His speed and agility for a second-year offensive lineman are uncommon, and it's rare that a defender burns him with a quick get-off. I like his reach block as well. Johnson has shown multiple times that when he does get an angle, he can plant a defender in the dirt or clear them out of the play. Johnson should be an exciting name to watch going forward.

Another sophomore starter on the Raiders' offensive line, Kane is a bigger OL prospect who I'm surprised has not received more attention. He, too, has a nasty streak, and for a 6'2" 265 lb-frame, he moves like a tight end down the line. He always finds work, and while I'd like to see him play lower at times, he can lock out defenders and has fast feet that allow him to drive D-linemen off the ball. Kane frequently plays through the whistle, moving from one block to the other with ease. Kane has stock-riser written all over him, and he's someone I could see shooting up recruiting boards this offseason.

A JV RB who is expected to emerge as a varsity athlete next season, Walek has a lot of tools that will lend themselves to his success down the road. I think his greatest asset as a ball carrier is his vision. Walek routinely finds cutback lanes when plays appear to be breaking down, and due to how hard he runs, there are multiple times he's able to extend a play for a few additional yards. I'd love to see him on the camp circuit this offseason for some in-person evaluation!

Myers is widely regarded as one of the best 2028 prospects in Minnesota, and he showed no signs of slowing down during his sophomore campaign. A boundary corner with a fantastic tape in both quality and quantity, Myers put up wild numbers during his second year as a varsity starter, even while missing two games. Immediately in his film, you notice Myers' athleticism. I don't know how many DBs in the state possess this kid's ability to get in the air and snag a ball. He's got legit explosiveness too, and does an excellent job of forcing PBUs in man coverage. He's able to put receivers in a phone booth, not giving them an inch of space throughout their routes. Hailing from a school that has produced elite DBs over the past couple of years, I think Myers is next to carry that mantle. I'm excited to watch his recruiting next season.

An athlete I've been high on for quite some time, Miles-Nuessmeier, has previously seen success at camps as a QB, but tore it up during his sophomore year as an RB for the Blaze. There's a lot to like on his tape. Miles-Nuessmeier is an explosive ball carrier who shoots through the hole at 1000 mph. He's got great burst, and man, does he run hard. He frequently breaks the first tackle and churns his legs on contact, always falling forward for extra yards. He's got underrated vision and the ability to make a rapid cut at the LOS, which allows him to chunk off more yardage. I don't know what role he will play in the Burnsville offense next season, but I'm positive he'll be successful in it.

A varsity starter at LT as only a sophomore, Noriega is an OL who could make waves in the future. He's a forceful run-blocker who can put a defender on skates once he gets going. When Noriega is able to get a defender to the second level, he does a great job of finishing his block to the ground. He's shown that he can work to the second level to hit LBs in the run game, and also possesses a nasty push-pull move, which he is able to utilize in both pass-pro and run blocking. I'm eager to see more of Noriega going forward.

A sophomore who saw some time on varsity last season, Plum is a wideout who I could see evolving into a far bigger role on offense during his junior campaign. He's got a solid frame, hovering between 6'2" and 6'3", and a decent wingspan, which he properly utilizes. He moves well, making surprisingly quick cuts for an athlete of his size. He does a great job of laying out for underthrown passes, and balls that typically shouldn't be caught can be. He's also got some upside as a run blocker. When he locks onto a defender, he can cause them problems, and even has some pancakes on his tape—pumped to see more of Plum going forward.

Another sophomore varsity starter for Burnsville, Garcia is an ILB with breakout potential over the next couple of seasons. He's a super physical tackler with utility in both stopping the run and the pass. I love how hard he plays downhill, often working well through the wash, blowing up lead blockers, and making tackles near the LOS. He makes the right reads, frequently. Stopping jet sweeps, quick counters, and iso's alike. I'd love to see this kid at a combine soon. I think Garcia has legit potential to evolve into a sought-after prospect.
