Week 9 Whiparound: Top Performances, Best Games And Fun Stuff

Week 9 of the 2025 New Mexico High School football season is complete. Here is our ninth edition of the Weekly Whiparound, our comprehensive deep dive into everything that happened on the field. Enjoy!   Teams of the Week: Rio Rancho (6A), Artesia (5A), Bloomfield (4A), Shiprock (3A), Texico (2A).   Rio Rancho (5-3, 3-0) stayed unbeaten in District 6A-1 by outlasting Volcano Vista, 28-27, in overtime. The Rams never led in regulation before QB [player_tooltip player_id='1604705' first='Micah' last='Takahashi'] ran 8 yards for a TD on the first possession of OT. The PAT gave Rio Rancho a 28-21 lead. Volcano Vista got the ball (from the 10-yard line, per OT rules) and quickly scored on freshman Jude Gonzales' 10-yard TD run. Volcano Vista elected to go for the do-or-die 2-point conversion. Gonzales was stuffed by the Rams defense on an inside run to give the Rams the win. Rio Rancho trailed, 21-14, late in the third quarter when Takahashi threw a 27-yard TD pass to WR [player_tooltip player_id='1548456' first='Matthew' last='Stagman'] with 1:39 left to tie the score at 21-21.           Artesia (7-1, 5-0) squared off with rival Roswell Friday night at the Wool Bowl in the annual Clash of the Titans between the top two teams in Class 5A. Bulldogs QB [player_tooltip player_id='1672571' first='Derrick' last='Warren'] completed 19-of-33 passes for 316 yards and SIX touchdowns to lead Artesia to a 42-28 victory. [player_tooltip player_id='1139144' first='Bryce' last='Parra'] rushed for 93 yards on 18 carries and raced 75 yards for a TD on a screen pass. [player_tooltip player_id='1600893' first='Trent' last='Egeland'] caught 3 TD passes and Parra had two for Artesia, which jumped out to a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Roswell responded with 14 straight points before Artesia closed out the first half with a TD pass from Warren to Jett Fuentes. The Bulldogs led, 35-14, after the third quarter.                Bloomfield (7-1, 5-0) showed again Friday night that the Class 4A state championship runs through the Bobcats as they impressively demolished Bernalillo, 60-16, at Spartan Stadium. Bloomfield QB Manual Chavarria led the powerful Bobcats offensive attack by throwing for 277 yards and 5 TD. RB [player_tooltip player_id='853022' first='Peyton' last='Duncan'] rushed for 134 yards on 13 carries. Bloomfield's defense limited Bernalillo to 211 total offensive yards. The Bobcats trailed 10-7, midway through the second quarter before erupting for 32 straights points.   Shiprock won its first game of the year, 19-18 over Crownpoint, as Chieftains QB Blake Begay threw for 132 yards and 2 TD.   Texico (6-3, 3-0), the defending Class 2A champions, traveled to Eunice and beat the Cardinals, 42-34, in a premier District 2A-3 matchup. The Wolverines now have sole possession of first place in the district as they seek a top four seed. QB [player_tooltip player_id='1613755' first='Cross' last='Figg'] was exceptional again for Texico as he threw for 194 yards and 4 TD on 12-of-21 passing and rushed for 174 yards. Sandia QB [player_tooltip player_id='1594010' first='Jahleel' last='Lewis'] completed 18-of-25 passes for 335 yards and 6 TD as the Matadors trounced West Mesa, 54-0, for a mercy rule win. Sandia has won three of four games since an 0-4 start and are now solid contenders for a playoff berth in Class 6A. The Matadors have a huge matchup with Albuquerque High in Week 10.     [player_tooltip player_id='1137475' first='Jayden' last='Gutierrez'] threw for 235 yards and 4 TD (three to WR [player_tooltip player_id='1137867' first='Elijah' last='Rivero']) while rushing for 211 more on just 12 carries to propel Lovington to a 58-28 victory over Gadsden. In all, Gutierrez accounted for seven TD in the win, which improved Lovington to 4-4 overall, 3-2 in District 5A-2. The Wildcats have sole possession of fourth place in the district and are seeking to host a first-round 5A playoff game.           In a battle of teams with unbeaten district records, Hozho Academy's [player_tooltip player_id='1137855' first='Brandon' last='Bonaguidi'] scored his team's lone touchdown and booted the game-winning 28-yard field goal with 31 seconds left in the Wolves' 9-8 road victory over Navajo Prep in Farmington. While the game was dominated by the defenses, Bonaguidi rushed for 140+ yards. His 10-yard TD run on the first snap of the fourth quarter was the first points scored by either team. Hozho Academy (6-2, 3-0) has sole possession of first place in District 2A-1.         Best Team Offensive Performance: Bloomfield. The Bobcats overwhelmed Bernalillo's typically stout ‘Goon Squad' defense by amassing 545 yards, proportioned almost equally between passing and running, in Bloomfield's 60-16 win on the road.     Best Team Defensive Performance: Los Lunas. The Tigers defense held Santa Fe elite RB Jasper Nelson to just 22 yards on 13 carries in a 38-0 victory. Overall, Los Lunas limited the Demons to 27 rushing yards on 18 carries, an average of just 1.5 yards per rush.       Best Games: Albuquerque High 17, Eldorado 14; Silver 21, Albuquerque Academy 17; Rio Rancho 28, Volcano Vista 27 (OT).   Albuquerque High's quest for their first playoff berth in 30 years stayed alive as the Bulldogs rallied from a 14-3 halftime deficit to stun Eldorado Thursday night at Wilson Stadium on QB Julian Madera's 7-yard TD run with 29 seconds left, capping a make-or-break 12-play, 88-yard drive. The Bulldogs ran the ball 11 times on the final drive, and converted a fourth-and-2 from their own 22 early in the drive. RB [player_tooltip player_id='1266534' first='Alberto' last='Landeros'] had a 27-yard reception and a 27-yard run to move the ball inside the 10-yard line. Eldorado drove to the ABQ 28 in the final seconds but  missed a 45-yard field goal attempt. Albuquerque High (5-3, 3-2) is tied for third in District 6A-2 with Sandia (3-5, 3-2). Those teams clash in Week 10.   Silver RB Michael James Jimenez powered over from the 1-yard line on fourth down with 31 seconds remaining to lift the Colts to a dramatic 21-17 road victory over Albuquerque Academy Friday afternoon. Silver (6-3, 2-3) won its second straight District 4A-2 game after an 0-3 start. Silver led the Chargers, 14-0, at halftime before Albuquerque Academy rallied with 17 straight points to take a 17-14 lead on RB [player_tooltip player_id='1137080' first='Ryan' last='Williams']' 4-yard run with just under 8 minutes remaining. Silver drove 62 yards for the game-winning TD. WR [player_tooltip player_id='1751718' first='Milo' last='Brines'] gave Silver an early 7-0 lead with a 60-yard TD reception from QB [player_tooltip player_id='1709925' first='Josiah' last='Madrid']. Silver is one of SIX District 4A-2 teams with three or two district wins. It's going to be a wild finish there.                Best Rivalry Win: Hobbs 51, Clovis 22. The Eagles again claimed the trophy in one of the top rivalries in eastern New Mexico and stayed in contention for a top four seed in the 6A playoffs. QB [player_tooltip player_id='1605057' first='Junior' last='Medrano'] threw for 131 yards and 2 TD on nine completions and rushed for 54 yards. He accounted for 4 TD. Hobbs (6-2, 3-1) is part of a three-way tie for second place in District 6A-3 with Centennial and Carlsbad. Hobbs and Carlsbad square off in Week 11.                        Sophomore of the Week: [player_tooltip player_id='1684504' first='Jesus' last='Sanchez'], Centennial. Fillingin for injured star RB [player_tooltip player_id='1605033' first='Dailen' last='Ramirez'], Sanchez made the most of his opportunity to shine as he rushed for 162 yards and 5 TD in Centennial's convincing 54-8 victory over crosstown rival Organ Mountain. The Hawks led, 21-0, after the first quarter and never looked back. Sanchez's 50-yard TD run made it 27-0 early in the second quarter. Centennial (6-2, 3-1) is tied for second place in District 6A-3 with Hobbs and Carlsbad, one game behind Las Cruces.        Freshman of the Week: Devon Chavez, Estancia. Chaves continues to pile up impressive rushing numbers for Estancia. He had 157 yards and 2 TD on a workhorse 24 carries in the Bears' loss to Legacy Academy.            Class 6A Roundup: The Las Cruces Bulldawgs (8-0, 4-0)  stayed unbeaten by walloping Alamogordo, 47-0, on the road Thursday night. QB [player_tooltip player_id='853029' first='Gunnar' last='Guardiola'] threw three TD passes, RB [player_tooltip player_id='1137388' first='Daniel' last='Amaro'] rushed for 2 TD and caught 1 TD pass and WR [player_tooltip player_id='1142363' first='Francisco' last='Winnikoff'] caught 2 TD passes in the first half for the Bulldawgs, which built a 21-0 lead at intermission and continued to dominate in the second half. . .Cleveland (7-1, 3-0) is tied with Rio Rancho at the top of the District 6A-1 standings after mercy-ruling Piedra Vista, 54-0. Storm QB Jordan Hatch completed 11-of-14 passes for 255 yards and 3 TD. Cleveland also ran for 4 TD by four different ball carriers. Sophomore WR [player_tooltip player_id='1613490' first='Evan' last='Nanez'] had 3 receptions for 105 yards and 1 TD. The Storm defense held Piedra Vista to just 48 rushing yards on 23 carries, an average of only 2.1 yards per attempt. . .In Los Lunas, the Tiger rushed for over 250 yards. . .[player_tooltip player_id='1594142' first='Jhett' last='Kinghorn'] intercepted two passes (he has 4 in last 2 games) as La Cueva walloped Atrisco Heritage, 49-14, to keep sole possession of first place in District 6A-2 and keep their hopes of a top four seed alive. . .Cibola (5-3, 1-2) picked up its first District 6A-1 win by rallying past Farmington Saturday afternoon at Community Stadium. The Cougars trailed, 10-7, at halftime before dominating the second half. UNM commit [player_tooltip player_id='854199' first='Hayes' last='Baum'] scored on a Pick-6 interception while RB Damian Suarez rushed for close to 100 yards and a touchdown. The Rockets are tied for second in District 5A-2 with crosstown rival Roswell and will travel to Artesia in Week 10 before hosting the Coyotes in their annual end of the season rivalry game at the Wool Bowl. . .Valley (3-5, 3-2) stayed in contention for a 5A playoff berth with a 39-23 victory over Del Norte. Vikings QB Jonah Marez completed 12-of-23 passes for 281 yards and 2 TD, while RB [player_tooltip player_id='1605046' first='Zachary' last='Perez']-Verdeja (154 yards on 16 carries) and Joshua Sanchez (106 yards on 5 carries) both reached the century mark on the ground. Valley rushed for 356 yards on 29 carries, averaging 12.3 yards per attempt. . .Los Alamos (8-0, 5-0) kept undisputed possession of first place in District 5A-1 with a 50-0 rout of Rio Grande. RB [player_tooltip player_id='1604744' first='Jordan' last='Herrera'] rushed for 120 yards on 11 carries. The Hilltoppers can clinch the outright district title with a win over Valley in Week 10. . .[player_tooltip player_id='1266996' first='Carlos' last='Garcia'] rushed for 91 yards on 17 carries as Miyamura (4-4, 3-2) moved into a four-way tie for second place in District 5A-1 with a 28-12 home win over Capital, overcoming 169 passing yards by Jaguars QB [player_tooltip player_id='1604951' first='Ace' last='Bachicha']. . .Belen (4-4, 3-2) beat Highland at its own game, rushing for 274 yards on 28 carries in a 21-8 victory over the Hornets. Belen QB [player_tooltip player_id='1604925' first='Gonzalo' last='Cano'] rushed for 187 yards and 1 TD on 12 carries. Highland amassed 334 rushing yards – 177 by [player_tooltip player_id='1137423' first='Jose' last='Tapia'] – but managed to score just 8 points. The two teams combined for 608 rushing yards. . .Los Lunas (5-3, 4-1) rode a balanced rushing attack to a 38-0 win over Santa Fe, which saw its playoffs hopes dim, especially with La Cueva next on the schedule. The Tigers finished with 234 rushing yards, winning the ground battle by a significant margin. The Sartans now lead the Lobos by one-half game in the district standing. RB [player_tooltip player_id='1154954' first='Hershul' last='Olloway'] raced 75 yards on the first snap of the game. WR [player_tooltip player_id='1154956' first='Cayl' last='Cox-Liggins'] caught 2 TD passes on offense and intercepted 2 passes on defense. QB [player_tooltip player_id='1154948' first='Isaiah' last='Carpenter'] threw for close to 200 yards and 4 TD. . .Taos (4-4, 4-1) built a 27-0 lead by the midway point of the second quarter and cruised past Kirtland Central, 40-0. [player_tooltip player_id='853710' first='Evan' last='Salazar']'s 1-yard TD run and  [player_tooltip player_id='1599919' first='Roman' last='Quintana']'s 21-yard rushing TD gave Taos a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Tigers, who have won three straight games, have sole possession of second place in District 4A-1 behind Bloomfield (7-1, 5-0) and host Moriarty in a key Week 10 matchup. . .Moriarty (4-3, 3-2) pulled out a 13-12 victory over Grants by scoring all their points in the second half. The Pintos trailed 6-0 when they took the lead on a rushing TD midway through the third quarter. Thery added another TD late in the third quarter for a 13-6 lead. Grants scored on a 9-yard rushing TD with about 6 minutes left and chose to go for the two-point conversion. The Moriarty defense denied the bid and neither team scored again. . .Valencia (4-4, 2-2) QB [player_tooltip player_id='1604768' first='Santino' last='Mares'] rushed for 2 TD and RB [player_tooltip player_id='1599923' first='Michael' last='Storms III'] ran for a TD as the Jaguars came to Albuquerque and beat Manzano, 22-14, in a key District 4A-2 game. The Valencia defense had 3 interceptions and blanked the Manzano offense. The Horsemen dominated early and built a 22-0 lead after the first quarter. [player_tooltip player_id='853063' first='Isaiah' last='Dominguez'] caught a 35-yard TD pass four minutes into the game and added a 3-yard rushing TD about 5 minutes later to help St. Michael's build the three-score lead. [player_tooltip player_id='1267011' first='Brayden' last='Hollis'] caught a 15-yard TD pass from QB [player_tooltip player_id='1600843' first='Kamal' last='Stith'] in the first quarter. St. Michael's added two more TD in the second quarter and led, 35-0, at halftime. . .Dexter (6-1, 4-0) stayed unbeaten in District 3A-3 with a 34-16 victory over NMMI. The Demons held NMMI's vaunted rushing attack to 104 yards on 40 carries. Dexter hosts Hot Springs in Week 10. . .Robertson, recently decimated by mass suspensions that has significantly reduced the number of available players, beat Hope Christian, 9-7, in a defensive struggle in Las Vegas. Neither team had 200 total yards of offense. Robertson led, 6-0, at halftime on [player_tooltip player_id='1155256' first='Nathan' last='Gonzales']' 9-yard TD pass to Brenen Deisler before Deisler booted a field goal in the third quarter to make it 9-0. Hope Christian scored its only points on a TD pass with about 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter. . .Thoreau (7-1, 4-0) battered Zuni, 56-0, in a game that ended by mercy rule at halftime. . .Pojoaque Valley stepped away from district play for a week and trounced Santa Fe Indian School, 52-0. Junior RB [player_tooltip player_id='1129687' first='Jonah' last='Villegas'] rushed for 107 yards on just 4 carries in the mercy-rule win. Pojoaque Valley faces St. Michael's in Week 10. . .Raton (4-4, 2-1) has sole possession of third place in District 2A-2 after beating Capitan, 54-6. Tigers RB [player_tooltip player_id='1604784' first='Cael' last='Walton'] continued his solid season with 206 rushing yards and 3 TD on just 9 carries, including an 80-yard scamper. [player_tooltip player_id='1613495' first='Colt' last='Ayon'] added 104 rushing yards. . .Hatch Valley (5-4, 3-2) is now tied with NMMI for third place in District 3A-3 following a 32-13 road win at Hot Springs. . .Santa Rosa (8-0, 3-0) stayed unbeaten with a 49-0 victory over Tucumcari. . .Wingate outlasted Tohatchi, 53-40, in a high-scoring shootout.                               Class 2A Roundup: Eunice QB [player_tooltip player_id='854273' first='Elijah' last='Melancon'] threw for 220 yards in the Cardinal's loss to Texico. He now has 9,639 career passing yards, moving him to within 371 yards of the magical 10,000 career passing yardage mark. Only 3 quarterbacks in state history have eclipsed 10,000 passing yards. Eunice travels to Tularosa in Week 10. . .Newcomb beat Laguna Acoma, 16-7, for the Skyhawks' first District 2A-1 win. . .Legacy Academy (7-1, 3-0) traveled to Estancia and beat the Bears, 42-14, to stay unbeaten in District 2A-2. The Silverbacks are tied with Santa Rosa atop the district standings. Those two teams meet Oct. 30 in a possible winner-take-all district championship game.
