Since most of the attention goes to the volume guys - i.e. the QB's with the most passing yards - I wanted to take a step back at mid-season and look at the QB's who are performing exceptionally well in all facets of the quarterback position, and not just passing yards.

To do that with what little statistics are available, one approach is to examine a quarterback's "passing rate" which looks at a number of factors baked into an equation that spits out performance numbers that range between 0-158.

Any score above 105 is considered excellent, with numbers over 125 considered in the elite efficiency range.

Listed below are the components that factor into the passing rate formula:

Completion % (COMP): Number of successful passes.

Attempts (ATT): Total pass attempts.

Passing Yards (YDS): Total yards gained via passing.

Touchdowns (TD): Number of passing touchdowns.

Interceptions (INT): Number of interceptions thrown.

In order to score high it is critical to have a high TD pass to interception ratio, a high completion percentage and big yards per attempt. If you are a QB in a dink-and-dunk scheme, your team tends to run it in for the score once in the redzone and you unfortunately have demonstrated a proclivity for throwing picks, you probably won't score very high.

However, if you are fortunate to be in the right system, with the right coaches and you bring to the table all the skill sets of an elite gunslinger, you are expected to score high. If you aren't, something is off.

Another thing to notice is the guys below are winners - almost all are leading teams to unbeaten records to date and are doing it by not only superior athleticism but by taking care of the football.

You can't be a true gunslinger if you can't consistently ring the TD bell or give the ball up in crucial situations...

In this report we are taking a look at QB's by class based on passing rate. The playmakers below have at least 500 yards passing, and a passing rate of 125 or higher, which is considered elite territory.

So without further adieu, let's check out the state's elite passing-rate gunslingers so far in 2025.

Top QB's Based On Passer Rating - passing rate score listed first

151, [player_tooltip player_id='1664431' first='Savion' last='Stone'], KC Washington, – phenom start to say the least - so far, the only member of the 2K Total Yards Club, averaging 400+ yards per game with 2,059 total yards – 1,267 pass, 792 rush, 70% completion, 18-0 TD passes to picks. Really incredible numbers to start a season.

151, [player_tooltip player_id='1113374' first='Kasen' last='Parsons'], Osage City – another lethal dual-threat leading the powerful and undefeated Indian attack, and one of the dual-threats I have been most impressed with is completing passes at a sizzling 75% completion, 15-1 pass TD's to picks and has 1,566 pass yards.

142, [player_tooltip player_id='1403641' first='Gannon' last='Jacobson'], SES - defending state Champ QB and one of the most clutch ballers in the state, as evidenced by his legendary performances rallying his team in the playoffs last year and so far has 955 pass yards, 68% completion, 15-1 pass TD's to picks,1,566 pass yds,

142, [player_tooltip player_id='1113368' first='Daxton' last='Minton'], Great Bend – gunslinger leading one of the most dangerous offenses in the state and one who would have much bigger stats if he got to play the entire game with 783 pass yards, 73% completion, 13-1 pass TD's to picks.

140, [player_tooltip player_id='1578939' first='Brayden' last='Myovela'], Maize - a D1 multi-positional talent who could be all-state at WR or QB but is killin' it as a gifted quarterback leading the #1 ranked team in the state with 730 pass yards, 509 rush, 71% completion, 10-0 pass TD's to picks.

He is one I have been following closely as a rising star who is leading an unbeaten team with 972 pass, an outstanding 75% completion, 14-0 pass to picks.

138, [player_tooltip player_id='1579585' first='Jerick' last='Humphreys'], Hesston – he is an under the radar gunslinger, but not for long. Has led his team to a 4-1 mark and scored 50+ points the last three games with 775 pass, one of the top completion percentages in the state at 78%, 7-1 TD pass to picks.

125, [player_tooltip player_id='1075837' first='Tevin' last='Cotter'] - Liberal, a rare 5A freshman starter last year picking up where he left off and one of my favorite western Kansas QB's who gets better every game with 1,029 pass/211 rush, 62% completion, 17-3 pass TDs to picks.

Freshman ('29)

None (met the 500 yd minimum and 125 passing rate criteria - there are some good freshman starting gunslingers out there but are not up to elite standards just yet, but getting close!

In conclusion, get out and see this guys before they start playing on Saturdays.

Keep Grindin'
