6A Oregon: Midseason All-State 1st and 2nd Team (Defense)

The Midseason All-State Offense and Defense is done in collaboration with Jordan Johnson. This is not just a recruiting-based list, although most of the individuals listed are ranked among the top athletes in their respective regions. As with most all-state lists, team success is a heavy factor in whether or not an individual is selected. Willamette defensive lineman and Oregon Ducks four-star commit [player_tooltip player_id='739439' first='Tony' last='Cumberland'] leads the state in sacks and is delivering on his immense promise, while Lakeridge senior [player_tooltip player_id='769915' first='Noah' last='Tishendorf'], a West Virginia commit, has dominated even the best of competition this year.   Central Catholic's [player_tooltip player_id='1654734' first='PJ' last='Tautu'] is a force inside and already holds an offer from Oregon State, solidifying his status, while Cumberland's teammate, Tripp Johnasen, has been a force in his own right.   Lake Oswego star [player_tooltip player_id='1246545' first='Josh' last='Christensen'] is carrying over a strong camp circuit onto the gridiron.   As he adds more strength and fills out, he'll become a first-team all-state lock.   The linebacker group might be the state's most talented, and I wouldn't be shocked to see movement up and down the list by the time playoff performances are taken into consideration.   Currently, Lake Oswego senior [player_tooltip player_id='457009' first='Sam' last='Vyhlidal'] tops the list, and is followed closely by Willamette junior [player_tooltip player_id='791149' first='Kawai' last='Chamberlin'], Central Catholic senior [player_tooltip player_id='402406' first='Donnie' last='Vercher III'] and Lakeridge senior Kalani Messnger, all of whom are having big-time years - both statistically and on tape.   I would be remiss not to mention the loaded second-team group, which consists of West Linn duo [player_tooltip player_id='769922' first='Zach' last='VandenBrink'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1234610' first='Cole' last='Dickson'], Oregon City junior [player_tooltip player_id='1708636' first='Jarrett' last='Skinner'], Jesuit senior [player_tooltip player_id='777410' first='Roman' last='Mallard'], Lake Oswego's [player_tooltip player_id='402422' first='Rowen' last='Lewis'], Glencoe's [player_tooltip player_id='402410' first='Isaac' last='Reynoso'], Roosevelt's [player_tooltip player_id='1112394' first='Geovoney' last='Burks'] and Beaverton's [player_tooltip player_id='1311537' first='Max' last='Baker'].   It was a really tough midseason list for sorting through those guys and all should be proud to make the list.   It's a star-studded group.   I love this year's defensive backs, as the group has been dominant and highly impactful.   Leading the way is All-American candidate [player_tooltip player_id='632957' first='Josiah' last='Molden'], who burst on the scene offensively for a second-team nod at receiver.   He is followed by Lake Oswego senior [player_tooltip player_id='1234612' first='Jalen' last='Bauman'], Central Catholic senior [player_tooltip player_id='1585700' first='Cole' last='Thomas'], Nelson senior [player_tooltip player_id='1110921' first='Chaz' last='Katoanga'] and North Salem senior [player_tooltip player_id='402395' first='Braxton' last='Singleton'].   While I expect fluidity among many other position groups, that defensive back group of five is going to be hard to split up.   They've been flat-out special and you'd be hard-pressed to move any of them down to the second team.   That said, the second-team group is very talented as well, and includes standouts from some of the state's top teams.   [player_tooltip player_id='769995' first='Evan' last='Wusstig'] is a rare two-way all-state selection, as he also made the cut as a receiver.
