CLASS AAAA
HUNTINGTON HIGHLANDERS
Defeated Martinsburg 22-20
The premier matchup of week two of the West Virginia high school football season was between Huntington and Martinsburg. The much-anticipated bout between the two powers in the state was closely contested, as many expected. The weather proved to be a huge factor in the game, with delays and tricky conditions that had a large impact on every play. The game was sloppy but competitive as the homestanding Highlanders eventually closed out the win over the defending champion Bulldogs.
Surprisingly, one of these two great programs had to start the 2025 season at 0-2 in the W/L column. This is the first time since 2015 that Martinsburg has seen itself winless after the first two games of the season, but we could see this battle of behemoths again in the playoffs, depending on seeding.
CLASS AAA
GREENBRIER EAST SPARTANS
Defeated rival AAAA Woodrow Wilson 28-14
Greenbrier East's talented senior class proved to be the difference in their rivalry win over AAAA Woodrow Wilson in week two to earn our Class AAA Team of the Week. We'll touch on some of those standout performances in our continued coverage this week, but the Spartans made a statement with the 28-14 win. That was a huge win for Greenbrier East's playoff aspirations, a feat they haven't accomplished since 2021.
They have a very tough remaining schedule and will need to continue to win some big games, but Greenbrier East is 2-0 again since their last playoff season, which could be a sign of what's to come the rest of the season.
CLASS AA
SISSONVILLE INDIANS
Defeated Tolsia 20-19 for first win in 1,035 days
The sports landscape has seen sweeping changes to its foundation over the past decade, which has even reached and impacted the high school level. We've seen transfers all across the state and country, which are increasing year over year, and have ravaged programs like Sissonville. The Indians have seen some of their best athletes suit up for other programs in the area, which aided in their 21-game losing streak. Sissonville ended that streak after 1,035 days with a 20-19 victory over Tolsia on Thursday night, as a sign of relief and joy echoed around their community. First-year head coach Michael Hughes has the Indians headed in the right direction with two highly competitive showings in the first two games of their young season, with hope flowing through the program again.
After seeing the emotion and joy of the Sissonville coaches and players in photos after the Indians' victory, it's stories like these that keep us coming back to a great sport during a tumultuous time in its history. To outsiders of the program, this may have appeared to be just another game, but for the players, coaches, school, and community of Sissonville, it meant everything.
CLASS A:
CALHOUN COUNTY RED DEVILS
Defeated Richwood 34-14, snapping 26-game losing streak
Another program that has fallen under hard times in recent history, but overcame a long losing streak for their first win in 26 games, was the Calhoun County Red Devils. They hadn't won a game since September 30th, 2022, against now-consolidated Paden City. This marked the first win for head coach Jeff Goodrich, who took over the Calhoun program in 2022.
This is just the 7th win since 2015 for the Red Devils, who have not made the playoffs since 2008. However, it's moments like these that keep players, coaches, program supporters, and communities coming back and keeping faith even during the difficult times.
