This week is the final tune-ups before region play for some while others are deep into the heart of region play on this final Friday in September. That means it's time for the playmakers to rise to the top.

We have a few teams on bye this week, but most are in action in Week 5 across the CSRA and Midlands area. We look at some of the players that could play important roles this week and the weeks coming ahead as we head for November and playoff football.

[player_tooltip player_id='1822186' first='Jaemon' last='Benson'] DB, Keenan

The Raiders have lost two in a row, and things don't get any easier with Chester coming to town. Benson is coming off eight tackles, one tackle for loss performance against Orangeburg-Wilkinson and will be a key in trying to slow a Chester offense that is coming off a 55-point outing against Union County.

[player_tooltip player_id='1822587' first='Blain' last='Drake'] QB, South Aiken

Drake came in for starter [player_tooltip player_id='1704301' first='Tommy' last='Burns'] in a loss to Brookland-Cayce and put up good numbers. The senior was 9-of-10 for 119 yards and two late touchdowns. He also ran the ball 14 times for 84 yards, which was the team's best. The Thoroughbreds have alternated wins and losses this season so it will be interesting to see if that trend continues at Airport.

[player_tooltip player_id='1654810' first='Drelyn' last='Brown'] ATH, Silver Bluff

Brown has been impressive at times this season and will likely be a major contributor with region play beginning in one week. Brown is extremely fast, and he can do damage once he gets into the second level. Two weeks ago, he rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries and added another 104 yards receiving and a touchdown on four receptions. The Bulldogs face a reeling Barnwell team that's lost three in a row.

Marcus Jacobs RB, Barnwell

The Warhorses are looking for answers offensively after dropping three in a row and Jacobs might provide some help. In a loss to Swansea last week, he carried the ball 10 times for 78 yards. That's not earth-shattering numbers but Barnwell struggles in the passing game so they need Jacobs and the others like [player_tooltip player_id='1817436' first='Nehemiah' last='Brown'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1603960' first='Damahjai' last='Devoe'] to make up for it in the ground game.

[player_tooltip player_id='1820474' first='Preston' last='Smith'] RB, Midland Valley

The Mustangs offense was stymied in a loss to Gray Collegiate to open region play. Smith could take some pressure off the passing game and move the chains on the ground. He's averaging 15 carries per game and might be able to handle a heavier workload going forward.

[player_tooltip player_id='1537086' first='Tyree' last='Johnson'] ATH, Brookland-Cayce

Johnson did a little bit of everything in helping the Bearcats to their first win of the season. The senior caught six passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, completed a 40-yard wide receiver pass and added a pick-6 on defense. Depth is an issue for B-C so it's going to take more efforts like this from Johnson in a very tough AAAA region.

[player_tooltip player_id='1822545' first='Brandon' last='Mack Jr'] RB, Dreher

Mack put the offense on his shoulders last week with 230 yards and three rushing touchdowns in a loss to York. The Blue Devils had very little offense outside of the senior running back. The passing game struggled, and other backs found very little room to run. There is a reason Mack carried the ball 14 straight times to open the second half. He's durable, shifty and can make people miss in tight spaces.

[player_tooltip player_id='1825202' first='Lavay' last='Penny'] LB, Camden

Penny has been a pleasant surprise for the Bulldogs this season, coming in as a sophomore and being the leading tackler in the early part of the season. He's averaging just over 10 tackles per game. Penny has good size at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds and can move well, making plays sideline-to-sideline. Camden is senior heavy on the defensive side of the ball, so Penny is getting plenty of experience with a veteran group.

[player_tooltip player_id='1822649' first='Logan' last='Neal'] QB, Andrew Jackson

Neal has been steady for the Volunteers this season, throwing for 501 yards and two touchdowns. That balance has allowed [player_tooltip player_id='1820137' first='Jvon' last='Kelly'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1394996' first='Damias' last='Seegars'] to run the football with success as well. Andrew Jackson will face Fairfield Central this week before facing the gauntlet of competition in region play.

[player_tooltip player_id='1816207' first='Joey' last='Jamison'] LB. Fairfield Central

The Griffins are coming off a tough loss to Newberry, but Jamison has been one of the more consistent players on the defensive side of things. In the first four games, he had 38 tackles from his linebacker spot. The junior is undersized a little at 5-foot-7, 155 pounds but he isn't afraid to stick his helmet in there to make a play.

[player_tooltip player_id='1827442' first='AJ' last='Hillary'] QB, North Augusta

We've known all along the Yellow Jackets can run the football with [player_tooltip player_id='402503' first='Mike' last='Doe'] but Hillary put on a decent passing display in the win over Gilbert. Hillary threw for 269 yards and four touchdowns with [player_tooltip player_id='1734528' first='Toian' last='Nabriat'] catching three of the TD passes. North Augusta still ran for 227 yards as they had over 500 yards of total offense in the victory. If Hillary throws it that well in region play, this North Augusta will be poised for a special season.

[player_tooltip player_id='473012' first='JP' last='Sweatt'] LB, Gray Collegiate

Sweatt is making plenty of plays at his linebacker spot, pairing with [player_tooltip player_id='473010' first='Michael' last='Boulware'] to form one of the better tandems in the state. Sweatt is averaging over 13 tackles per game with six tackles for loss and an interception. A lot of attention is being paid to Boulware so that allows Sweatt to play more freely and not face double teams.

[player_tooltip player_id='1817400' first='Markel' last='Byrd'] RB, Lexington

The Wildcats are coming off a bye and have one more non-region contest against Laurens this week. Byrd carried the ball 30 times his last time out but finished with just 78 yards. [player_tooltip player_id='1848408' first='Easton' last='Crocker'] has played well at quarterback and [player_tooltip player_id='1820755' first='Nigel' last='Lewis'] has been a big-play receiver, but Lexington is going to need to get more consistency out of Byrd and the running game going forward.

[player_tooltip player_id='1816441' first='Marek' last='Yates'] QB, Crestwood

The Knights offense was cruising along early in the season but is coming off back-to-back shutout losses. Yates is going to be good place to try and reverse that trend. The sophomore has 486 passing yards and four touchdowns. He has a big play receiver in [player_tooltip player_id='1823496' first='Jayden' last='Martin'], but he must spread the ball around more to open things up. The running game was only able to muster 57 yards in the loss to South Florence so more balance could help Yakes and Martin going forward.

[player_tooltip player_id='1823903' first='Sergino' last='Samuels'] LB, Lower Richland

Samuels led the Diamonds defensive effort with 10 tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, four quarterback hurries and a caused fumble in the win over Darlington. Since the season-opening loss to Lugoff-Elgin, Lower Richland has allowed 27 points in four wins. Samuels is a big reason why with 31 total tackles and five tackles for loss. He plays outside and can rush the passer (three sacks) or drop in coverage against tight ends and running backs.

Javonte Brown LB, Sumter

Brown totaled 10 tackles with two tackles for loss in helping the Gamecocks limit Spring Valley to 56 yards of total offense – or 1.2 yard per play. Sumter has back-to-back shutouts, and the play of the linebacker group has a lot to do with it. Brown is third on the team with 26 tackles. [player_tooltip player_id='1819523' first='Cameron' last='Bradley'] and Damarion Homes are just ahead of him, but Brown is the epitome of this defense – fast and physical.

[player_tooltip player_id='1268611' first='Jar'kese' last='Grant'] RB, Lugoff-Elgin

When the Demons run the ball well, they're tough to beat. That's where Grant will fit in, as he leads the team with 390 yards and three touchdowns on 71 carries. He's powerful and can make defenders miss in the open field. He's only topped 100 yards once this season but is steady enough to be averaging 78 yards per game. That balance is going to be key heading into region play.

[player_tooltip player_id='1672927' first='Ty' last='Abrams'] RB, Newberry

A lot of the focus of the Bulldogs success has been on the play of [player_tooltip player_id='1850165' first='Kenton' last='Caldwell'] at quarterback, but Abrams gives them an extra added dimension in the running game. Abrams scored two rushing touchdowns last week and is more than capable of breaking off a long run at any time.

Josiah Castillo LB, Columbia

The Capitals won their second straight and Castillo played a huge role in it. The junior accounted for nine tackles as Columbia has allowed just 14 points the last two weeks. The competition takes a step up with a trip to Swansea this week and that will be an even tougher challenge for Castillo and his defensive mates.

[player_tooltip player_id='1822446' first='Jerel' last='Wine'] LB, Swansea

The Tigers have allowed 46 points on the season and Wine (pictured above) has been right in the middle of it. In the win last week over Barnwell, the senior collected 14 tackles, two tackles for loss, two quarterback pressures and a sack. He's second on the team in tackles for the season and plays well out in space while covering a lot of ground.

[player_tooltip player_id='1537475' first='D'Juan' last='Franklin'] LB, Ridge View

The Blazers are battle-tested and coming off an impressive win over Camden two Fridays ago. The defense has played well considering the competition with Franklin leading the way with 30 tackles and four tackles for loss. He has a sack, an interception and a caused fumble to his credit as well. The offense has battled the injury bug but the word on this defense is they play fast and don't shy away from contact.

[player_tooltip player_id='1603902' first='Angelo' last='Rios'] RB, Westwood

The junior had a big night as the Redhawks won the Battle of the Axe over Blythewood. He ran for 85 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for 86 yards and a TD as well. He's the leading rusher on the season with 384 yards and is one of the top receivers out of the backfield as well. Westwood plays Ridge View this week in another rivalry game and keeping the ball out of the Blazers possession will be key.

[player_tooltip player_id='1825010' first='Noah' last='Gaines'] LB, Fox Creek

The Predators are 4-0 and a lot of it has to do with a defense that has allowed just 30 points this season with two shutouts. Stats are unavailable for last week but in the first three games, Gaines had a team-best 38 tackles to go along with a tackle for loss and a sack. Gaines is physical and arrives at the point of attack quickly. Fox Creek faces a winless Williston-Elko team this week before the schedule gets more difficult beginning in October.

[player_tooltip player_id='1639708' first='Brett' last='Epps'] OL, AC Flora

The Falcons suffered a huge loss last week when [player_tooltip player_id='1153356' first='Ashton' last='Thompson'] went down with an injury. We don't know the severity of it, but Epps and his offensive line mates are going to have to pick up the slack. AC Flora likes to go to the passing game around [player_tooltip player_id='1025784' first='Roper' last='Wentzky'] and a talented bunch of receivers, but the line must create a pocket and give Wentzky time to throw. That was difficult in the loss to South Pointe last week.

Ben Kiser QB, Hammond

The Skyhawks have uncharacteristically struggled on offense this season, but Kiser helped turn those fortunes around this past week. He rushed the ball 12 times for 152 yards and completed 7-of-11 passes for 145 yards. Kiser and [player_tooltip player_id='1647349' first='Cade' last='Amell'] have split time at the quarterback spot and whoever has the hot hand will get the nod most often. Hammond gets a Northwoods Academy team allowing 11 points per game.

This week is the final tune-ups before region play for some while others are deep into the heart of region play on this final Friday in September. That means it's time for the playmakers to rise to the top.
