Week 2 of the Oregon high school football season provided two of the best match-ups all year, as Lake Oswego clashed with Central Catholic and Summit and Wilsonville met in an early No. 1 vs. No. 2 battle in 5A.

Given the big-time match-ups it's no surprise that the “stock watch” is loaded with big performances and teams on the rise.

STOCK UP

Lake Oswego Lakers

No. 1 Lake Oswego not only beat No. 3 Central Catholic, the Lakers delivered a 21-0 shutout.

Coming into the contest, Lake Oswego's high-powered offense had outscored opponents 91-10.

But this game proved to be a slugfest.

The Lakers turned two turnovers into points, highlighted by [player_tooltip player_id='1234612' first='Jalen' last='Bauman']'s 41-yard interception return in the third quarter to put the game away.

It wasn't pretty, but a three-score win against one of the best team's in the state is a resume-booster for Steve Coury's club.

Lake Oswego ATH [player_tooltip player_id='1234612' first='Jalen' last='Bauman']

Lake Oswego senior [player_tooltip player_id='1234612' first='Jalen' last='Bauman'] has been sensational this season.

In Week 1 against Sheldon, the speedster didn't allow a single completion in coverage and returned punt 50 yards for a score.

In a clash against Central Catholic on Friday, Bauman's 41-yard pick-6 sealed the win.

A returning first-team all-state defensive back, Bauman has been one of the state's best players.

Bauman could see his recruitment experience a late surge based on his early senior season play.

Lake Oswego RB LaMarcus Bell

Welcome back, LaMarcus.

Through two weeks, Bell has already amassed more than 250 yards and five touchdowns.

Against Central Catholic, Bell scored the first two touchdowns of the game, and set the table for himself on defense by intercepting an errant pass.

Bell, a Utah Utes commit, is playing like the Gatorade Player of the Year favorite he was projected to be before the season.

Summit Storm

Summit earned a massive victory over No. 1 Wilsonville 28-20 on Friday, setting the stage for them to be 5A's new No. 1.

Senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1864133' first='Jude' last='Anderson'] led the way with over 150 yards on the ground, while wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1165789' first='Keona' last='Tam'] hauled in 10 receptions for 134 yards and two touchdowns.

Frankly, it's been an impressive 3-0 start for the program, beating Sprague (36-26), Roseburg (42-7) and, now, Wilsonville (28-20).

Summit is for real!

Sandy Pioneers

Sandy's narrow loss to 5A powerhouse Wilsonville in Week 1 was a sign the Pioneers were for real.

On Friday, they blasted McMinnville 58-6.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1110922' first='Caden' last='McMahon'] continues to have a strong season, as he rushed for 139 yards and two scores on just 13 carries.

Next up is a tough challenge against Lakeridge, which will provide the most clarify yet on the talent level of the intriguing Pioneers.

Jesuit RB [player_tooltip player_id='1591586' first='Luke' last='Ortner']

Junior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1591586' first='Luke' last='Ortner'] may be the top overall performer in the state from Week 2.

In a 34-21 victory over Tigard, Ortner carried the ball 38 times for 357 yards and three touchdowns.

Ortner is having a monster year and is quickly emerging as one of the state's most electric playmakers.

Willamette Wolverines

Willamette doesn't have many big challenges on the regular season schedule, so a clash with a talented Grants Pass team was seen as a potential barometer of their true potential.

It's safe to say Willamette is for real.

The Wolverines walloped Grants Pass 56-21 - with all the stars making big plays.

For the second week in a row, [player_tooltip player_id='1654724' first='Hunter' last='Vaughn'] scored on a punt return, while [player_tooltip player_id='1103441' first='Maveryck' last='Akers'] (3) and Zuzi Alwineyan (2) combined for five rushing touchdowns.

Mountainside QB [player_tooltip player_id='1232699' first='Cade' last='Mitchell']

Mountainside lost a ton of talent to transfer, but that hasn't slowed down senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1232699' first='Cade' last='Mitchell'].

He was responsible for all five of Mountainside's scores in a 35-0 win over Oregon City, throwing for two touchdowns and scoring three more on the ground.

He may not have the same support, but Mitchell remains one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the entire Northwest region.

Nelson ATH [player_tooltip player_id='937176' first='Malachi' last='Garlington']

Nelson upset Lakeridge in Week 0, but hasn't really looked the same since.

The Hawks lost 43-15 to Timberline (Idaho) and survived a scare against Newberg last week 17-14.

But [player_tooltip player_id='937176' first='Malachi' last='Garlington'] has been a superstar.

He scored both of Nelson's touchdowns in the narrow victory and continues to be one of the fastest-rising prospects in Oregon.

Garlington deserves a lot more recruiting attention.

STOCK DOWN

Central Catholic Rams

Central Catholic is still a top-five team in the state and will be a hard-out in the 6A state playoffs.

But with West Linn and Lake Oswego being viewed as the state title favorites, Friday's game against Lake Oswego was a chance for the Rams to enter that discussion.

A 21-0 loss means the Rams will be seen as a tier below the “dynamic duo” and eliminates them from the No. 1 discussion.

The Rams are still a great football team with high expectations for the season, but they won't have another chance to prove they are a top-two team until late in the playoffs.

A September 26 clash against Lakeridge will give Central Catholic another chance to make a statement.

Wilsonville Wildcats

Wilsonville still has a legit shot to win the 5A state title this season.

But their hold on No. 1 slipped away last week with a close loss to No. 2 Summit.

The Storm are the state's new No. 1.

Will they play again in the state title game?

That would be fascinating theatre.
