Onto the final position group I will be covering from Saturday's Jersey Shore AYF 14u tryouts: the defensive backs. Again, each of these players, just like the others in the series, performed well in multiple positional groups and impressed regardless of where they lined up on the field. However, these are 4 of the players I thought did a great job holding it down predominantly in the secondary. Without further ado, here are 4 of the DBs that shined last weekend.

Make sure to check out the previous articles about the 2030-2031 classes and follow me on X at @jondavalosFB for up to date player evaluations! More from the 14u Tryouts to come!

Matthew showed impressive natural ability as a defensive back on Saturday, standing out as one of the smoothest movers in drills with seamless transitions forward and backwards. Matthew's quick burst upfield highlights his ability to close space on a receiver or step up against the run, while his loose, fluid hips make him effective in changing direction without wasted movement. He showed strong composure, staying disciplined and unfazed by fancy footwork, and also flashed his offensive potential by burning a DB on a go route as a receiver. Explosive off the line and equipped with tools on both sides of the ball, Matthew has a bright future and plenty of upside to develop.

Xae Potter put together an outstanding showing in Jackson, NJ on Saturday, displaying excellent pass coverage throughout the afternoon. He was one of the players who truly elevated his game once the cone drills shifted into live action, consistently shutting down receivers and never allowing them an opportunity to find success. His instincts and timing stood out as he broke up passes with well placed hands, preventing completions in tight windows. On the offensive side, Xae showed he's just as dangerous, using sharp, shifty routes to create massive separation out of his breaks, leading to easy pitch and catch opportunities. His all-around performance proved he's a dynamic athlete with high-level potential on both sides of the ball.

Zyion stood out as one of the more physical defensive backs of the day, bringing toughness and effort every rep. His game elevated once the 1 on 1 drills with receivers began, where he was able to fully showcase his competitive edge and disruptive style of play. While his movement mechanics aren't yet the most polished, the foundation is there, and with some extra attention to his technique he has the potential to develop into a strong, reliable presence in the secondary.

Julian Simpkins, a member of the 12U All-Star team, proved that size doesn't define impact, showing he can go toe-to-toe with bigger, more commanding receivers. Despite being on the smaller side, he played much bigger than his frame, covering ground effectively and showcasing shiftiness in the DB drills. As he continues to grow and develop physically, his instincts and mobility will only become more dangerous, positioning him to be a real problem for opposing quarterbacks in the future.
