After all these years, a special feeling still comes over me when I pull into a Kansas town and the brightest thing on a Friday night is the lights at a football field.

When I worked as a sports writer, and before everyone had GPS, if you were driving into a town and had no idea where you were going, you just looked for those lights. They were usually the tallest structures in most of the towns I visited.

That feeling came over me as I was driving down Highway 24 and saw the lights at Basehor-Linwood High School and then again at Tonganoxie High School on my drive home.

On September 19, I scouted the Bobcats' United Kansas League contest against the Shawnee Heights Thunderbirds.

Here is a look at five prospects who had impressive nights.

[player_tooltip player_id='1113370' first='Carson' last='Dixon'], QB, 6'3”, 180, Basehor-Linwood, ‘26

Dixon is the signal caller for the Bobcats' offense, and he is an impressive field general. He has a big arm and can beat you with his arms or legs. Dixon is ranked No. 65 overall in the Kansas Class of 2026. He values and understands the importance of each possession and is mindful of taking care of the football. He has multiple weapons in the passing game, and he utilizes each one effectively. He is still uncommitted, but has received offers from NAIA programs, including Ottawa, Benedictine, and McPherson.

[player_tooltip player_id='1114730' first='Nash' last='Morrison'], WR, 6'3”, 185, Basehor-Linwood, ‘26

Morrison made multiple catches against the T-Birds. He has sure hands and is a deep threat in the offense. Morrison is ranked No. 84 overall in the Kansas Class of 2026. He has been well-coached on how to catch a football, and his instincts are solid. He runs crisp routes and can be utilized as a deep threat or as a possession receiver who picks up the tough yards on first down. He has multiple college offers, including one from Washburn University and one from Independence Community College.

[player_tooltip player_id='1113477' first='Cole' last='Hofer'], DB, 6'0”, 170, Basehor-Linwood, ‘26

Hofer is ranked No. 150 overall by Prep Redzone Kansas. His night included a key interception as Shawnee Heights was driving the ball in the second quarter. That pick off changed the momentum of the game and felt like a game-sealer at the time. He can cover receivers, play a deep centerfield, or come up and stick a guy in run support. He has offers from, but not limited to, Friends, Sterling, and Dordt.

[player_tooltip player_id='1114743' first='Roman' last='Miller'], TE, 6'4”, 210, Basehor-Linwood, ‘26

Miller is a big target with quality speed. He has nice hands and was used in the offense early and often. He is a solid weapon in the red zone, but also does his part has a blocker in the run game. He is ranked No. 162 in the Kansas Class of 2026. A state that continues to produce college-level talent at the tight end position.

Gavin Mitchell, RD/DL 5'10”, 200, Basehor-Linwood, ‘28

The surprise of the night was Bobcat sophomore Mitchell. This young man is a baller and flows like oil through a funnel. (Yes, that was an Over The Top reference, as that movie's theme song was on the pre-game playlist) Love me some Stallone. Mitchell has Keanu Reeves-like speed. He is utilized as a short-yardage threat and scored the first touchdown of the game. He also lined up a nose guard and blew past the center early for a quarterback sack and a hurry. I don't know what lies ahead for him in the future, but his motor runs hot, and he also wrestles. He is currently unranked, but I will lobby for him to be added.
