St. Pius X's big play offense is a thrill-a-minute machine as the Sartans proved Saturday in a 47-29 victory over Class 6A West Mesa at Community Stadium. St. Pius X amassed over 600 yards in total offense and had four scoring plays of 50+ yards, starting with the very first snap from scrimmage when FBS caliber RB [player_tooltip player_id='1154954' first='Hershul' last='Olloway'] (UNM and UTEP offers) turned the corner and raced 70 yards for the game's first TD. Olloway finished with 151 rushing yards while QB [player_tooltip player_id='1154948' first='Isaiah' last='Carpenter'] passed for close to 400 yards, including TD passes of 91 and 68 yards to WR [player_tooltip player_id='1155012' first='Curtis' last='Flakes III'].

Players of the Week: [player_tooltip player_id='1155116' first='Jahari' last='Morehead'], Eldorado (6A), [player_tooltip player_id='1139144' first='Bryce' last='Parra'], Artesia (5A), [player_tooltip player_id='1599923' first='Michael' last='Storms III'], Valencia (4A), [player_tooltip player_id='1137124' first='RJ' last='Montoya'], Hope Christian (3A), [player_tooltip player_id='1137096' first='Jay' last='Lee'], Legacy Academy (2A).

[player_tooltip player_id='1155116' first='Jahari' last='Morehead'] of Eldorado had one of the best games ever by a wide receiver in the state of New Mexico as he amassed nearly 300 receiving yards on nine receptions, four for touchdowns of 28, 89, 80 and 53 yards, in Eldorado's 56-28 victory over Organ Mountain at Wilson Stadium. He did all that in just over one half of football. QB Giovanni Evens also made several nice throws to Morehead. The Knights secondary struggled handling Morehead's blazing speed. They also opted not to double or even triple team Morehead. Eldorado head coach Charlie Dotson told Prep Redzone New Mexico afterwards that he believes opposing defenses will defend Morehead differently going forward, likely employing double and triple teams against him. As a result, other Eagle receivers must step up, starting with the Week 2 matchup against Cibola, whose head coach David Howes is widely regarded as a defensive guru.

Is Clovis Back?: Clovis was 0-10 in 2024 in head coach Stan Hodges' first season with the Wildcats. The Wildcats started the 2025 campaign on a more positive note as they snapped a lengthy 11-game losing streak with a thrilling 32-27 victory over Farmington at Leon Williams Stadium. Clovis QB [player_tooltip player_id='1154930' first='Javier' last='Jimenez'] fired a TD pass to Ethan Gutierrez and Clovis converted the important 2-point conversion late in the fourth quarter for the game-winning points, forcing Farmington to score a TD to win the game. Thanks in large part to a long pass completion, the Scorpions marched into the red zone in the final minute but time expired. The two teams combined for 39 points in the second quarter when Farmington's Talon Stowell scored twice. So, is Clovis back? We'll have a better answer in about two weeks after challenging road contests at Rio Rancho and Cleveland.
