The second game on the agenda for opening weekend was #7 Bellevue West hosting #4 Omaha Central in another highly anticipated Top 10 matchup. Here's my breakdown from Week 1's "Battle of the Birds" featuring the top players and a recap from Bellevue West vs. Omaha Central.

[player_tooltip player_id='212374' first='Kylonn' last='Haynie'] (2027), RB - Omaha Central - 5'10" 200 lbs - (@HaynieKylonn)

When it seemed like the game was starting to slip away, one of the more vocal players on the Eagles' sideline was junior 3-star RB [player_tooltip player_id='212374' first='Kylonn' last='Haynie']. Haynie would then turn words into action as he went to work, chipping away at the Bellevue West defense with every tough carry. Haynie is a powerful, 5'10", 200-pound running back who is like a runaway train when he's able to get his momentum going downhill. He is a patient runner who can allow his blocks to set up in front of him before finding a crease and exploding through it. For being a bigger back, Kylonn displays a well-rounded skill set with his ability to run with power while powering through tackle attempts, as well as being able to make a quick cut and zip across a defender's face. He is tough to bring down on initial contact as he does a good job running with a low, sturdy base and consistent pad level. On top of that, he's not going to go down without a fight as he's going to look to dish out some punishment himself with stiff arms and a willingness to drop the pads to drive through a defender's chest. If Kylonn keeps running like this, his offer list is going to be a LOT longer than it already is.

Who else to win CO-Player of the Game than the guy who capped off an incredible comeback with an even more impressive game-winning kick? Robin Vargas-Pablo, who was playing in his first-ever high school football game, was able to work past the pressure of a rocking Bellevue West crowd and knowing that the T-Bird defense had already blocked two kicks to drill his final attempt of the night. The kicking game had been shaky all game, but Robin rose when needed the most. Big time moment!

Other Standouts:

[player_tooltip player_id='422820' first='Tory' last='Pittman III'] (2027), S - Omaha Central - Nebraska Commit - (@ToryP_3)

The top in-state 2027 prospect, [player_tooltip player_id='422820' first='Tory' last='Pittman III'], showed why the Huskers tried so hard (and succeeded) to gain the commitment of the 5-star safety. Watching back some clips from Friday night, I was surprised to see him near the ball on so many plays. Even when playing deep, he is still able to crash downhill with his excellent closing speed, along with his range to flow from sideline to sideline. He is very instinctive with the ability to read and diagnose plays quickly and get in a position to make a play. When he's squared up on the ball carrier in a 1v1 situation, Pittman has demonstrated the technique and power to bring down his opponent on first contact. Good athlete who will also be looked at to make plays on offense.

[player_tooltip player_id='1590728' first='Micah' last='Santiago'] (2028), DL - Bellevue West - 6'3" 300 lbs - (@_santiago_micah)

I was very impressed with Bellevue West's [player_tooltip player_id='1590728' first='Micah' last='Santiago'] in my first in-person look at the rising '28 prospect. Micah stands out immediately with his 6'3" 300-pound frame that just looks like a next-level prospect. I saw him play some at defensive end, but mostly at tackle, where he is an excellent interior run defender. He does a great job of eating up space in the middle of the line of scrimmage and can be a legit two-gap defender with his ability to stack blockers. Santiago's push at the LOS forced opposing runners to look at bouncing the ball to the outside, which allowed his linebackers to get to the edge and shut down the run immediately. Santiago began to garner P4 attention this summer, which should continue with more great play from the T-Bird's sophomore.

[player_tooltip player_id='1774465' first='Kairi' last='Smith'] (2026), DB - Bellevue West - 6'0" 175 lbs - (@Kairi_10_Smith)

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1774465' first='Kairi' last='Smith'] is a player who didn't pop up on my radar until this summer, but is already looking like a quick riser, especially after a strong performance against the Eagles. Kairi is a sticky defensive back who can hop right into a receiver's hip pocket and make it a very long night for them. He's got good size at 6'0", 175 lbs, with nice length that is great for the position. Smith is a very willing tackler who knows how to lay the wood and will help out in run support. Good hands and ball skills allow him to break up passes at the catch point.
