On Saturday, May 3 I was fortunate enough to be invited to cover You Are Athlete's New Jersey Regional Exposure Camp. This event had a double session that features middle schoolers first and high schoolers second. As is customary whenever I attend an event, the first thing I take note of are the prospects that have the clear, physical measurables to immediately compete at the next, immediate level of play – also known as the eye test.

A crop of young, exciting, promising prospects played all along the defensive line, highlighted by North Carolina product Geovanie Iglesias. Iglesias's technique was very good for such a young prospect, set to graduate in 2030. Using a hard chip, Iglesias attacked running backs trying to get out into their pattern. Furthermore, the Tar Heel State product showed that he has mastered many elements of defensive line play, most notably finishing and executing outstanding rips and getting his hips through and around when pass rushing. The 7th grade prospect ought to set up his spin & pin a bit more.

fMaking the trip up from Delaware was Demian Temeh, who showed that he can really get off the ball quickly. I doing so, he was too much to handle and got through with a rip that his opponent could not handle. That same quickness was exploited moments later when he and his matchup ran it back, but this time, Temeh threw a different look - the spin & pin - for an easy victory. This young pup had plenty of new tricks. In the finals/best-on-best portion of the event, Temeh attacked the weeks shoulder to which his matchup overcompensated his power down. Again, too quick to handle, Temeh worked back outside for the dub. He also won another rep in this final round due to his outright speed off of the snap... AJ Lombardi, a New Yorker, demonstrated that he is a defend-the-run-first type of lineman who translates his moves to pass rushing. Lombardi did a nice job of locking on his arms, pressing his matchup off of him in order to create space to find the ball and get into his gap. A powerful prospect, Lombardi was a load to handle at moments. This same power also translated to when he worked his rip move. The scary part? Lombardi graduates in 2032, making him just a fifth grader.

Moving on to the New Jersey prospects, [player_tooltip player_id='1277801' first='Nadir' last='Smith'] is one to keep an eye on. A current 8th grader, Smith understands how to use the long arm - although I encourage him to keep working to press and gain full extension when deploying it. Off of that same move, this 2029 graduate stacked the swim move off of. Smith would benefit from maintaining his pad level, staying low, and getting his hips through. This said, in the finals he managed to get home to win his matchup twice by using the spin & pin... Closing out is Jayssen Martinez. With time still to develop, the 2030 graduate - or current 7th grader by my count - might benefit from an eventual move to linebacker. Given his size and ability to move, I can see him flourishing there during his high school career.
