They were riding high after capturing the school's first state championship in nearly four decades. They were the preseason favorites and they had the largest bullseye on them because of it. They answered the call time after time. They took care of business in the opener and then had back to back close calls against Arkansas opponents but came out of the non-district slate with a 3-0 record. In district play, their dominance reached all time heights. Coming into the season, the Roughers were heavy favorites to win the district crown and it showed. They won every district game by double digits with the majority of those wins coming by 40+ points. The closest game came in week eight, on the road, when they beat Sand Springs by 16 points. They closed out the regular season with a 10-0 record and were still the favorites to defend that crown. They shut out Putnam City in the quarterfinals and then took down Stillwater in the semifinals, in a game that was a rematch of the 2023 state title game. They met Choctaw for the gold ball and for three quarters, it looked like the Roughers were going to capture their second straight state championship. The Roughers led 25-7 late in the third quarter but Choctaw would score 19 unanswered points to stun the Roughers. Muskogee had one last shot to win but a 21-yard field goal in the final seconds was wide right. The season ended in heartbreak. A truly special senior class would be graduating but that's not the only thing that would be changing.

2025 OUTLOOK

Less than a week after the state championship game, head coach Travis Hill was introduced as the next head coach at Broken Arrow. When that job opened, Hill was the obvious number one candidate. Muskogee lost one Hall Of Fame coach but ended up replacing him with another one. A few weeks later, the Roughers would introduce longtime Wagoner head coach Dale Condict as their next head football coach. And in 2025, the Dale Condict era will officially begin in Rougher Village. Muskogee is going to look quite different and it's more than just the head coach. Only two starters (from Muskogee) return on the offensive side of the ball. Five starters (again, from Muskogee) are back on defense. But that's not the only group of players that have starting experience. The Roughers got several move-ins and transfers this offseason so that number is not entirely accurate. Muskogee will have several players that start this fall that started elsewhere last season. Replacing one of the best players in the state at the quarterback position will be tough but Muskogee feels like they have their guy. Defensively, they have the chance to be pretty good again. Overall, the expectations aren't changing when it comes to contending for the state championship. They are in the east side district and it will more than likely come down to that week eight showdown with Sand Springs. Whoever wins that district will have a good shot of making it to Edmond. And let's face it, Condict-coached teams are always considered one of the teams to beat and expect to be contending for state titles, year after year.

KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION

Jamarian Ficklin - Quarterback (Signed With Utah - 2X Player Of The Year Finalist)
Miguel Chavez - Offensive Lineman (Signed With Oklahoma St. - All State 1st Team Selection)
PJ Wallace - Running Back (Signed With Pitt. He had a breakout season as a sophomore and followed that up with an All State-caliber season in 2024. Now, he's moved over to the Roughers and looks to provide that same impact in all three phases of the game. Simply put, Scott knows how to find his way to the end zone. And it doesn't matter if he's catching the ball, running the ball, returning the ball on special teams or if he forces a turnover. Scott has been there and done that. Now, he steps up a few classifications and is ready to produce against tougher competition.

(2024 All State 3rd Team Selection)

Senior two-way standout [player_tooltip player_id='1708287' first='Dacaden' last='Ford'] is the first of a few Wagoner transfers on this breakdown. Ford would start for the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball but the excitement level is high for what Ford can be on defense. Defensively, Ford is a lockdown cornerback that had a terrific junior season in 2024. He finished with nearly 30 tackles and had four interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Ford was also productive on the offensive side of the ball and while he can still be that for Muskogee, there's no doubt that his value is higher on the defensive side. Nevertheless, he's another addition to this Muskogee team to keep an eye on.

Senior offensive and defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1708289' first='Hayden' last='Von Holt'] is another addition to the Muskogee roster from Wagoner and he's another player that can really impact both sides of the ball. First up, defensively, Von Holt was an absolute nightmare for opposing offensive linemen last season. He finished the year with 50 tackles and 30 of those coming behind the line of scrimmage and he also added three sacks. Simply put, he knows how to get pressure on the opposing backfield and there isn't much opponents can do to slow him down. Von Holt was also a dominant member of the Wagoner offensive line and gives Muskogee more depth there as well.

You could see flashes last season that Muskogee senior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1699006' first='Jamie' last='Beasley'] was ready to take the next step and become that marquee playmaker for the Roughers at the wide receiver position. Beasley would finish the year with 23 catches for nearly 500 yards and seven touchdowns. He had some big moments in their biggest games of the year, which is always a quality that we take very seriously. College coaches have agreed with the fact that Beasley is the next guy to blow up from Muskogee. His recruitment started to take off this offseason and he's committed to Sacramento State. Beasley is primed for an even bigger senior season in 2025.

Junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='891992' first='Kason' last='Delgado'] has had quite the high school career so far. He spent his freshman year at Union, starting in several games because of injury to the original starter. He started for Edmond Santa Fe last year until he had a season-ending injury. He started this year at Broken Arrow before moving to Muskogee following spring ball. Delgado appears that he'll be the guy at QB1 for the Roughers when they take the field this fall. He certainly has the ability but we're looking forward to seeing him play a full season at full strength. And when you look up and down this Muskogee roster, there is no doubt that Delgado will benefit from the firepower at wide receiver.

(2024 All State Honorable Mention)

When we caught Muskogee back in the spring, Condict continued to point to senior defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1699028' first='Kyron' last='Cope'] as a player that was primed for more breakout moments this fall. And it was easy to see why in that team camp session. He certainly looks the part, measuring in at 6'3 and 230 pounds. He's incredibly explosive and he has the weight room numbers to back up the overall strength that he plays the game with. Last season, Cope finished with 64 tackles and a handful of sacks. Between Cope and Von Holt, these two can absolutely dominate on the line of scrimmage. Cope gives Muskogee that explosive pass rusher that's going to be very tough to stop.

MORE NAMES TO KNOW

Ace Cherry - 2029 Wide Receiver/Linebacker
Anthony McNac Jr. - 2027 Tight End/Defensive Back
[player_tooltip player_id='1833717' first='Aven' last='Goodlin'] - 2026 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Courtney Nash - 2028 Defensive Lineman
Demarion Berryman - 2028 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Devon Nero - 2026 Offensive Lineman
Hunter Lanier - 2026 Offensive Lineman
Jack Green - 2026 Defensive Lineman
JoJo Alexander - 2027 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='1570990' first='Kaden' last='Harken'] - 2026 Linebacker
Keanu James - 2027 Wide Receiver
Kenyon Goodson - 2026 Defensive Back
Marquis Chaplain - 2026 Running Back
[player_tooltip player_id='1167844' first='Stylan' last='McHenry'] - 2026 Athlete
Te'Maji Williams - 2029 Defensive Lineman
Tevaughn Loane - 2028 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
Tre'Shaun Pouncil - 2027 Defensive Back

2025 SCHEDULE

Aug. 29th - AT Booker T Washington
- For the second straight year, the regular season will open up with a match-up against Booker T Washington. Last season, Muskogee beat the Hornets 56-21. This season, they'll head to Tulsa to face a BTW team that has a lot of momentum going. The Roughers are looking for their third straight win in the series.
Sept. 5th - Rogers, AR.
- Muskogee's home opener takes place in week one, when they host Rogers in an Oklahoma-Arkansas match-up. The Roughers would survive their trip to Rogers last year, winning 33-28. Prior to that victory, they had lost the previous two meetings with the northwest Arkansas program.
Sept. 12th - AT Bentonville West, AR.
- Non-district play will wrap up in northwest Arkansas as Muskogee will square off with Bentonville West in week two. Last season, these two played a high-scoring instant classic, with Muskogee prevailing 49-48. That win would snap a three-game losing streak in this series.
Sept. 26th - AT Ponca City
- After a week off following non-district play, the Roughers will hit the road for the district opener against Ponca City. The Roughers would open up district play a year ago with a 59-14 victory over the Wildcats. Prior to last season's meeting, these two teams met in the playoffs in back to back years.
Oct. 3rd - Putnam City West
- Despite it being considered the “east district” in 6A-2, Muskogee and Putnam City West have been district foes since 2018. This series has been all Muskogee since it began. The Roughers have won all six meetings, including last year's 51-0 win. In the last three years, all three wins have been by 50+ points.
Oct. 10th - AT Bartlesville
- These two teams have been district foes since the split in Class 6A but the series has been completely one-sided. Bartlesville won the first two meetings in 2014 and 2015. Since 2015, Muskogee holds an 8-1 advantage over the Bruins, including winning 55-0 last season.
Oct. 16th - Capitol Hill
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Muskogee will host Captiol Hill. Last season was the first time these two teams locked up after Capitol Hill was dropped in Muskogee's district. The Roughers would roll to a 54-0 victory. This is a Capitol Hill program that has been struggling over the last few decades.
Oct. 24th - Sand Springs
- On paper, this match-up certainly looks like it could end up deciding the district championship. Muskogee will host Sand Springs in week eight in a match-up between two top five teams in Class 6A-2. The Roughers beat the Sandites 49-33 and have won the last three but this one could be much more competitive.
Oct. 31st - AT Sapulpa
- Muskogee will hit the road in week nine, looking to get a big road win on Halloween night over Sapulpa. This game wasn't competitive last season, as Muskogee would cruise to a 57-7 victory and that would lock up the district title. The Roughers are hoping a win here will do the same in 2025.
Nov. 7th - Putnam City North
- The regular season will come to a close at home, against Putnam City North. The Panthers were another new team on the district slate for the Roughers last season and Muskogee had no problems. They beat Putnam City North 36-0 to close out the regular season a year ago.

NOTABLE

There is no doubt that Muskogee is entering a new era of Rougher football in 2025 with Dale Condict taking over as head coach. And he's taking over a Muskogee program that is in a very good position. Between the new facilities and their 33-5 record in the last three seasons under Travis Hill, Muskogee is as healthy as they've been as a program since the turn of the century. Now, you put a coach like Condict in charge of the program and there should be no anticipation of a step back under new leadership. The résumé speaks for itself when it comes to Condict. He has 277 career victories with nearly 250 of them coming at Wagoner in just 19 seasons. He immediately turned Wagoner into arguably the best and most consistent program in Class 4A for two decades. They won six state championships under Condict and he's coming to Muskogee, looking to build off the foundation that Hill started. Players have followed Condict to Muskogee and the Roughers aren't lacking talent, although they will look quite different this fall.
