He is excellent as both a slot receiver and an outside receiver. At both positions, he is able to make defenders miss after the catch and gain yards almost every time he catches the ball. He runs outstanding routes. His ability to make subtle moves while running those routes is impressive. He also catches the ball well in between defenders while in traffic. He moves well when he is inside the box, but he could work on showing more of a motor by chasing plays down all over the field. Lugo has a chance to improve in this area with his conditioning. He played as a linebacker and a running back last year. As a linebacker, he is a classic inside linebacker who comes upfield and makes plenty of tackles in or near the line of scrimmage. He has excellent linebacker skills as he is able to read and make a ton of plays all over the field. Then, when he hits the opposing offense players, they feel his impact. He was also a bulldozer at running back. He just plays running back to punish the defense. He is a tough physical player on both sides of the ball. His ability to throw the ball is at a high level. His mechanics and footwork are good overall, but it is still an area of growth for him. The other big part of his game I love is his ability to sit in the pocket and throw the ball when he is going to get hit. He did this several times, as he still delivered a good pass to his receiver. Finally, Hawthorne throws a beautiful deep ball. He knows how to put the perfect amount of touch on the ball.
