The Berryhill Chiefs came into the 2024 football season with high expectations. They were a top five team heading into the season and had the majority of their starters coming back from a quarterfinal team in 2023. But the Chiefs stumbled out of the gates, losing their first three games and by the time district play started, they found themselves with an 0-3 record. It wasn't exactly the start that they drew up but as we know, non-district games mean nothing for the big picture of playoff seeding and Berryhill certainly flipped that switch when district play began. Following an 0-3 start, Berryhill responded by winning six straight games. And they were pretty dominant throughout that winning streak. Four out of the six wins during that steak were by 20 points or more. They won six in a row, setting up a week ten showdown with Cascia Hall with the district championship on the line. The Chiefs came up short of capturing that district title when they fell to the Commandos, 35-14. That dropped them to number two in the playoff seeding as the postseason began. They hosted Holland Hall and were upset by the Dutch, losing 21-13. The season came to an end at 6-5 and could definitely be categorized as a roller coaster ride. They lost three straight, followed by winning six in a row and then dropping their last two. But there's no doubt that it's left a sour taste in their mouth and as they get ready to begin the 2025 football season, they will be incredibly hungry to start fast and more importantly, finish strong.

2025 OUTLOOK

Berryhill has been preparing for the start of the 2025 football season and this is a team that certainly has the potential for making plenty of noise in Class 3A this season. The Chiefs are once again in the preseason top ten and they could be knocking on the door of being in the top five by the time district play begins in week four. Once again, the majority of Berryhil's starters return and it all begins on the line of scrimmage. Berryhill has done a good job over the last decade at producing outstanding offensive linemen and this year is no different. Eight starters return overall on the offensive side of the ball and the offensive line can grab plenty of the headlines. The Chiefs will be breaking in a new quarterback but because of all the talent around him, it's certainly not as daunting of a task as it could be. The new quarterback will be thrown into the fire in the first month of the season as the Chiefs play a very competitive non-district schedule. But that should toughen the team up for making a run in the district. Defensively, the Chiefs also bring back eight starters and here's where we think Berryhill could be off the charts good this season. They have eight starters back and the front seven is going to be absolutely filthy. The production they bring back on the defensive line and linebacker group is going to be a problem for opponents throughout the year. On paper, the schedule looks incredibly similar to what we saw last season. Getting off to a fast start will be important but it could all come down to that week ten showdown with Cascia Hall and for the second straight year, the district title could be decided there. Berryhill has been searching for their second state title for two decades now and they want to finish the job in 2025.

Senior offensive lineman and Oklahoma State commit [player_tooltip player_id='1304608' first='Aiden' last='Martin'] comes into this season as one of the state's top offensive linemen. As we mentioned earlier in the preview, Berryhill has done a really good job at producing offensive linemen over the last decade and Martin is the next guy on that list. The Berryhill big man checks just about every box you could have for the offensive line position. Martin and the rest of the Berryhill line will pave the way for what could be an explosive offense. And earlier this offseason, he announced his commitment to Oklahoma State and has stayed loyal to the Cowboys as they have built a very impressive in-state recruiting class.

Senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='876534' first='Braden' last='Schwickerath'] was an intriguing prospect to us going into the 2024 football season. We knew about Schwickerath after his time at Summit Christian but he moved over to Berryhill over a year ago and was making the transition to playing 11-man football. He clearly didn't have many problems. He finished the season with nearly 100 tackles, including 19 tackles for loss and he also had ten sacks on the year. Schwickerath is one of several returning starters in the Berryhill front seven that make this unit so intriguing as we inch closer to the start of the 2025 football season. We could end up seeing Schwickerath have a better season this fall with even more production.

We mentioned earlier and with Schwickerath that this front seven can be absolutely nasty this season. Senior defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1161904' first='Harry' last='Vaughn'] will set the tone on the line of scrimmage. He's an absolute problem for opposing offensive linemen and he's coming off a solid junior season. He had over 50 tackles on the year, including seven sacks and he was also able to impact the passing game, batting down passes and coming up with an interception. Vaughn has good size and his overall length is what opposing offensive linemen have a hard time defending. Vaughn will be looking to do the same thing Martin is doing for the offensive line. Set the tone and dominate up front.

All signs point to junior [player_tooltip player_id='1718244' first='Max' last='Harland'] being the guy at the quarterback position this season. We couldn't get confirmation on that but everything we've seen from clips in the spring to 7v7 reps in the summer suggest that Harland will be QB1 for the Chiefs, replacing Payne, who graduated. Harland doesn't come into this season completely raw. He got some playing time last season, specifically in non-district play so there's no doubt that he got thrown to the fire a little bit. But that experience could really help Harland as he goes into this season because he's already been through it. As Harland grows and develops, this offense will continue to rise up the charts.

If Harland is indeed the guy for Berryhill, the fact that he will have Berryhill's leading receiver from last year returning is a big benefit. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1718249' first='Wayne' last='Howell'] returns after a big junior season. He led the Chiefs in receiving with nearly 600 yards and eight touchdowns. He had a really consistent stretch during the middle of the season where he was catching at least one touchdown in every game. His season-high came in the win over Jay, when he caught three passes for 171 yards and all three catches went for touchdowns. That kind of production could be huge for Berryhill as they try to establish themselves as one of the top offenses in 3A football.

2025 SCHEDULE

Aug. 29th - Cushing
- For the second straight year, Berryhill will open the season against Cushing. They've played every year since starting the series in 2014. Berryhill began the series winning five of the first six meetings but Cushing has won five straight, including last year's 18-7 victory in the season opener.
Sept. 5th - AT Fort Gibson
- Berryhill heads east to take on another 4A program on the rise with Fort GIbson in week one. The Chiefs lost a heartbreaker to the Tigers last season, falling 37-36. The year before that, they lost 22-19. The Chiefs are going to be hungry to turn things around in this series in 2025.
Sept. 12th - Bristow
- Berryhill will wrap up non-district play in week two against Bristow. Berryhill's first two non-district opponents have been pretty consistent but Bristow was a new opponent for the Chiefs as these two hadn't met at any time in recent memory. Bristow got the best of Berryhill in 2025 but they'll have a new head coach this fall.
Sept. 26th - AT Cleveland
- District play will open up for Berryhill in week four, with a road game to Cleveland. Last season, these two teams met for the first time in recent memory and the Chiefs rolled to a win. They beat Cleveland 49-0 and that would end up being the largest margin of victory for the Chiefs in 2024.
Oct. 3rd - Inola
- Berryhill hosts Inola in week five and the Chiefs look to continue their dominance in this series. In the last two decades, these teams have met ten times and Berryhill is a perfect 10-0 against the Longhorns. That includes last seasons' 42-7 victory. The Chiefs look to continue gaining momentum here.
Oct. 10th - AT Jay
- The second half of the regular season begins with a road game in week six against Jay. The Chiefs will square off with the Bulldogs after beating them 50-30 last season. These two teams have met a handful of times over the course of the last two decades and Berryhill is undefeated in those meetings.
Oct. 16th - Vinita
- On a Fall Break Thursday night in week seven, Berryhill will host Vinita in another intriguing district match-up. The Chiefs beat the Hornets 34-20 last season and this has been a series that's been relatively one-sided in the last ten years. Berryhill is 4-1 against the Hornets during that stretch.
Oct. 24th - AT Verdigris
- Berryhill goes on the road to face Verdigris in week eight. The Chiefs beat the Cardinals 56-20 last season and they've won the last two in a row and three out of four in the series with Verdigris. The Cardinals bring back almost everyone from last year and will have a new head coach.
Oct. 31st - Claremore Sequoyah
- On a Halloween night in week nine, Berryhill will have their final home game of the regular season when they host Claremore Sequoyah. Last year, the Chiefs beat the Eagles 28-21 and this has been a series that Berryhill has dominated in the last 15 years. They've now won ten straight in the series.
Nov. 7th - AT Cascia Hall
- All eyes will be on this match-up as Berryhill goes on the road to face off with Cascia Hall in week ten. In 2025, this match-up decided the district champion and it wouldn't be surprising if we saw the same thing again this fall. Cascia beat the Chiefs last year but Berryhill has won four out of the last six.

NOTABLE

It's a milestone season for head coach Pat Harper as he gets ready to start his 20th season coaching Berryhill football as their head coach. Last season, Harper hit another milestone when he won his 150th game as Berryhill's man in charge. The Chiefs have been a consistent winner under Harper but he's still chasing that elusive state championship. Under Harper, they've had some teams that have knocked on the door step of that championship. They played for the 2009 state title but fell to Cascia Hall. They also made the 2011 semifinals. But ever since that appearance, Berryhill has routinely won their first round game but they haven't made it back to the final four since that 2011 game against Anadarko. This season, the Chiefs want to take that next step and like we said earlier, it could all come down to that week ten game against Cascia Hall. If Berryhill can capture the district title, they will set themselves up with a favorable road for the playoffs. And in year 20 for Harper, making that deep playoff run would be a storybook season.
