On Saturday, May 10th, 2025 I was welcomed back for the third year in a row to cover Coach Nick Pennisi's PSR Big Camp Series hosted at Monroe High School in Monroe, New Jersey. As I have come to expect, this event was packed with participation, loaded with talent, and ran extremely well.

Different than other events, Pennisi opted to have three different check-in times, based on position groupings. This afforded me the opportunity to get a closer look at many of the prospects in attendance. Below are just some of my notes on the position group mentioned in this article's title.

The first prospect up today came from Secaucus - [player_tooltip player_id='1688962' first='Brandon' last='Vega']. Vega's coaches might have heard Rutgers' Coach Schiano speak at a clinic or two, because Vega knows to chin the ball. Moreover, as contact threatened, Vega secured the ball with both arms to illustrate its security is his highest priority... In recent seasons, Jackson Memorial has featured sneaky-good talent out of the Shore Conference. [player_tooltip player_id='1514626' first='Jio' last='Kabiri'] is the next man up at tailback. Kabiri has good size for a running back at 5'9" 170 pounds. From the bits and pieces I caught of him, I thought Kabiri's approach was a bit too casual as he took his reps. For instance, I thought that he did not really bend, drop, or attempt to fake out defenders as he ran routes or competed in tight spaces.

Anytime the host facility, Monroe High School in this case, sends a prospect to compete I have to do my best to shout them out. This time it was [player_tooltip player_id='1688967' first='Jon'mir' last='Deavereaux']. A 2027 graduate, Deavereaux did a great job of utilizing his extension and reach to play the ball. In doing so he maximized his catch radius, making himself a quarterback-friendly target out of the backfield... [player_tooltip player_id='402248' first='Zahir' last='Weatherington'], a prospect who has bounced around a bit already early in his high school career, showed the promise that made him such an enticing middle school prospect. The sure sign of a natural runner, Weatherington did an excellent job of reading defenders like a book. In doing so, he was able to set them up, manipulate his speed, and treat the defender like a marionette as he got them to over pursue.

Solely based off of the variety of players you are thrown into the fire with, with no prior rapport, camp experiences can be challenging to some degree. Early on [player_tooltip player_id='1688966' first='Zahkai' last='McDonald'] seemed to struggle with the mesh. After a few reps, this issue was remedied and never presented itself again. Moreover, McDonald had a nice forward lean when he ran. During the regular season McDonald might be able to have a farm of cheap, easy yardage as he falls forward... Closing out is a prep school prospect in [player_tooltip player_id='1688969' first='Oscar' last='Irwin']. Irwin, from The Pingry School, showed a unique ability to change direction on a dime and control his body. Irwin was running what appeared to be a simple flat route until he stopped on a dime, cut up, and turned in into an inverted pivot route with depth. That depth allowed for an easy pitch-and-catch for a ball that had a little bit of loft on it. During cat & mouse simulation, the 2027 prospect showed the ability to shake & bake like Ricky Bobby, as the defending linebacker bought the shoulder fake as Irwin broke him down to rubble.
