The Class of 2028 rankings received a massive update earlier this week as we grew the number of ranked players to 30 and added over 100 new names to our watchlist.

To cover this update, Rob and I will be doing positional breakdowns featuring ranked and watchlist prospects. Now, I'm covering the QBs, which is still a very young, but super promising group of passers with the tools to develop into elite prospects.

Great opening act for Centerville's [player_tooltip player_id='1671366' first='Mack' last='Murdock'], who quickly earned his varsity stripes and received the distinction as top QB in this update. Playing in seven games as a freshman, Mack had a fairly efficient season, throwing for 1,001 yards and eight touchdowns with a 140 QBR while completing 55% of his passes and only one interception. Murdock already possesses ideal college QB size at 6'3", 195 pounds, which allows him to stand tall and dissect defenses from the pocket. Mack makes smart, decisive decisions with the ball and can pass it to all three levels of the field with accuracy. He knows how to lead receivers with his passes and can throw with good timing. Great deep ball. Murdock also showed that he can be pretty dangerous with his legs and can make defenses pay when he sees an open lane. Won't be long before we see some offers coming Mack's way!

QB [player_tooltip player_id='980028' first='Cannon' last='Davis'] comes over to Bettendorf after an impressive freshman campaign with Durant last fall. Even with the Wildcats having an up-and-down season, Cannon still passed for 862 yards and seven touchdowns with an additional score on the ground. Part of what stood out from Cannon's tape was his mobility and the ability to operate on the move. He can roll out of the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield, looking for a target, and can throw well on the move. Good accuracy throwing to all three levels and can put enough zip on his passes to fit the ball into tight windows. Davis enters his sophomore season with a legit shot to take over the QB1 duties for the Bulldogs.

Sophomore QB [player_tooltip player_id='854786' first='Taylen' last='Alford'] has long been on our radar since showing off his polished arm talent the summer before his freshman season. Although we don't have a ton of tape from last fall, we have had several opportunities to watch Taylen operate in person. Taylen had a strong 7v7 season, leading an explosive Carroll Chargers offense. What has stood out about Taylen's game is his anticipation with his throws, showing his trust in his receivers by placing the ball in the perfect spot. Alford can throw long, short, and even into tight coverage with top-tier accuracy. Taylen should continue to gain more traction on the recruiting circuit as he continues to grow and fine-tune the nuances of being a QB. Big season coming up for Alford as he battles for Kuemper's starting spot.

Cedar Falls' [player_tooltip player_id='1630523' first='Baylor' last='Petrie'] is a player we're closely monitoring after a strong 7v7 season and a busy camp cycle that has seemingly turned heads. Baylor projects well as a dual-threat QB who can use his strong arm or speed to move the chains. Watching his tape, I was impressed with Baylor's ability to read defenses and move through his progressions to find the open target. Petrie showed the upper body strength to push the ball deep and can generate enough torque to let off bombs even when his feet aren't fully set. He can maneuver the pocket well and won't hesitate to pull the ball if he sees a big hole for him to run through. Baylor, like some of the other mentioned QBs, could make a play for the starting role.

Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1162291' first='Jack' last='Corson'] joins the Dowling Catholic QB room after transferring over from Waukee, where he had a solid showing on the freshman squad. Despite the lack of varsity film, it's clear from his freshman tape that Jack has the tools and arm talent to develop into a solid prospect. He does a good job scanning the field before locking in on his target and delivering an accurate ball. Corson had some impressive passes into tight windows and showed that he can layer his throws over defenders to drop it right in the bucket. Don't sleep on Jack's running ability either, as he was able to escape and scramble to pick up first downs when needed. There are still areas to improve on, but Jack should be able to continue working on them in a prolific program like Dowling Catholic.
