Nearly 90 prospects from all over the region and beyond made their way to Concord University for their second prospect camp of the summer.
I thought 2026 Hillcrest (SC) DB [player_tooltip player_id='1680986' first='Chris' last='Briggs'] was far and away the top defensive back at the Concord Prospect Camp on Friday. He locked down his man on every rep that we caught on video and had an excellent overall day, which sent him home with an offer from the host Mountain Lions. Briggs has very good length, which proved to cause issues for opposing receivers during 1-on-1s. He was physical in man coverage and didn't allow his man to create any separation. Briggs' future may be at safety in college, where he has a very high ceiling.

Yet another Piper (FL) prospect who impressed me at the Concord prospect Camp was 2026 DB Kourageous Thompson. He's a smaller defensive back who would be a good candidate for nickel at the next level. Thompson matches up well in the slot with his quickness and fluidity as an athlete. Playing closer to the line of scrimmage feels like a strength of his, which was further demonstrated when reviewing his junior highlight tape. Thompson also has outside corner potential, but is at his best in the slot.

A talented safety prospect to know out of the defensive back group at the Concord Prospect Camp is 2026 South Pointe (SC) DB [player_tooltip player_id='1267332' first='Cedric' last='Wherry']. He looked bigger than his listed 5'11 170 size in person with a developed physique. That translated to physciality during 1-on-1s as an athlete who doesn't shy away from contact and is willing to push the boundaries with what he can get away with. Wherry has the athleticism to patrol the back end of a defense as a single-high safety, but his physicality benefits him well in run support when watching his junior film.

Although he didn't post an offer from the Mountain Lions, I liked what I saw from 2027 Piper (FL) DB John Hodge III at the Concord Prospect Camp on Friday. He's another small DB from Piper who performed well in 1-on-1s with several winning reps. Further speed and agility training would greatly benefit his testing numbers, as someone who plays faster than his numbers would suggest. Hodge III had strong closing speed on his man, breaking up several passes and an interception that we saw when playing the ball.

Gavin Gibson is a 2026 DB to know out of North Carolina who flashed some good things at the Concord Prospect Camp. He's considered a Top 50 defensive back by our NC site in a talent-rich state. Although he didn't run the 40, Gibson's athleticism was proven with a 4.47 shuttle time and a 9.5-foot broad jump. He has good length and size with the potential to slide back to safety at the next level. Gibson hasn't posted any offers to date, but is definitely someone that D2 programs should be checking out.
