2025 VALLEY PREVIEW

OVERVIEW

Valley has made significant strides in Billy Cobos' first three years as head coach of the Vikings. They've reached the Class 5A playoffs every year, won a pair of postseason games, captured a district title and competed in the quarterfinals in 2022 and 2023 when they finished 8-4.

Last season Valley finished 4-7 and lost to Los Alamos on the road in the first round of the 5A playoffs.

“Last year's team had big expectations, but we fell short of those expectations,” Cobos told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “This year, our kids know that even if they go to the playoffs, having a losing record is not OK. They've been working their butts off, all the time. They come in every day and take care of business.”

OFFENSE

3 Players To Watch: [player_tooltip player_id='1600815' first='Jose' last='Jaramillo'] (QB), [player_tooltip player_id='1605046' first='Zachary' last='Perez'] (RB), Gabe Gonzales (WR).

Six-foot-2 rising senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1600815' first='Jose' last='Jaramillo'] divided snaps with a graduated senior last season, but the job looks to be his on a full-time basis in 2025. He threw the ball well at last weekend's Bernalillo 7x7 Tournament.

“It's his job,” Cobos said when asked about Jaramillo. “His performance, grit and never-say-die attitude (in impressive). I told him that we have to put him in better situations. He took a lot of shots last season.

“We have to protect him a lot better than we did last season when we had a young O-Line. He's taken on the role of being the guy. Hopefully, he'll surpass his numbers from last year. We do have some good receivers.”

Constantly harassed and put under duress by opposing defenses, Valley quarterbacks tossed 25 interceptions last season (more than 2 per game), a number Cobos hopes to significantly decrease in 2025. Overall, Valley lost the turnover battle by a wide margin last fall.

“We definitely have to take care of the ball better as a group,” Cobos said. “Those things really hurt us.”

Rising junior [player_tooltip player_id='1605046' first='Zachary' last='Perez'] was second on the Vikings in rushing last season and probably has the edge in the battle for the No. 1 RB job. But Cobos doesn't plan to make any decisions until all candidates have had a sufficient opportunity to showcase their talents in summer workouts.

“Zach definitely has the most experience of all our running backs,” Cobos said. “We have some young guys we could put in there as well. Right now, the running back position is close to being wide open with Zack holding a narrow advantage over everybody else.”

Rising freshman Jude Holguin impressed as a kick returner for the varsity as an eighth-grader last season. Don't be surprised if he's no worse than the No. 2 RB for the Vikings when the receiver starts. He could also line up at receiver. Rising sophomore Jonathan Silva is another possibility while rising junior Estevan Cordova-Romero could see action at RB too.

Rising junior Gabe Gonzales emerged last season as one of the top young receivers in the Albuquerque Metro Region with 50 receptions for 818 yards and 5 TD. As the likely No. 1 WR for the Vikings, Gonzales could eclipse 1,000 receiving yards in 2025. [player_tooltip player_id='1672794' first='Josh' last='Sanchez'] was limited by injuries last season but has plenty of potential. Rising senior [player_tooltip player_id='1750457' first='Thomas' last='DeJesus'] (13 receptions in 2025) will compete for the No. 2 job behind Gonzales.

Cobos hopes the experience gained by last season's young O-Line will prove valuable in 2025. Returning starters include rising junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='1788694' first='Brayden' last='Sherred'], rising sophomore center Jeremiah Rodarte and rising senior guard [player_tooltip player_id='1750484' first='Aiden' last='Bazan']. Both offensive tackles will be new and those spots are wide open as summer workouts begin. Rising senior Emanuel Soto will compete for one of those tackle jobs.

DEFENSE

3 Players To Watch: [player_tooltip player_id='1606155' first='Malachi' last='Chestnut'] (DL), [player_tooltip player_id='1750530' first='Rey' last='Estrada'] (LB), [player_tooltip player_id='1750560' first='Elijah' last='Martinez'] (LB).

Valley's defensive line last season had two next level talents in Juan Vigil (signed with ENMU) and Christian Powell. Both have graduated, so the Vikings are seeking capable replacements. The next breakout star at DL for Valley could be rising [player_tooltip player_id='1606155' first='Malachi' last='Chestnut'], who started at DT in 2024 and has an impressive motor. Rising junior [player_tooltip player_id='1788721' first='Cole' last='Rawlings'] has been waiting for his opportunity to shine and this should be his year.

Rising junior twins Logan Arp and Troy Arp could contribute as well along with rising junior [player_tooltip player_id='1788758' first='Rece' last='Sedillo'], who's described as a weight room warrior, and rising senior Santiago Gutierrez, who could play on both levels in the defensive front seven.

Rising senior [player_tooltip player_id='1750530' first='Rey' last='Estrada'] headlines the LB corps. He's the second leading returning tackler for the Vikings. Zach Perez (see above) could also play LB. [player_tooltip player_id='1750560' first='Elijah' last='Martinez'], the top returning tackler, will likely line up at ILB. The fourth LB could be Estevan Cordova-Romero (see above). Cobos said as many as eight or nine players could compete for playing time at LB.

In the secondary, Gabe Gonzales could be one of the starting cornerbacks. Rising junior Eyzik Chavez has experience at the varsity level. [player_tooltip player_id='1672794' first='Josh' last='Sanchez'] is another possible two-way player for Valley. Rising senior Spencer Brooks and rising junior Levi Paulus will compete for DB jobs. Some of the secondary spots are wide open, Cobos said.
