The Maple Grove football team has won two of the last three 6A championships, so it is not surprising that they had multiple MVPs at Prepredzone's Spring Minnesota Showcase. [player_tooltip player_id='402073' first='James' last='Engle'] Jr. took home the running back MVP, and his teammate [player_tooltip player_id='1533914' first='Beaux' last='Thyen'] was voted MVP of the linebacker group.

"I could have performed better," Thyen said. "I think my route coverage needs work. We play mostly cover three, so my reps on man-to-man need work. I was pretty happy with my testing times, but I need to work on my broad jump. It was a good day."

This was Thyen's first time at an event like ours.

"I needed to get some times down. The bigger goal was to see where I was and what I needed to improve. Then, getting the exposure to the colleges that were there and getting my name out there to get some exposure."

The Crimson junior impressed the coaches running the drills and the one-on-ones.

"I think my ability to move smoothly through the drills separates me. Also, I take a lot of pride in my willingness to make a play and get to the ball. Hopefully, they saw that."

In a real game, Thyen's strengths are not just physical.

"I think my strength is hunting the ball. After watching film, I am able to adjust during the play. I give a lot of effort and get to plays. One of my roles is to keep my teams' heads up. My voice was gone during the state championship game because I was trying to keep their head in the right spot and everyone on track."

In Maple Grove's defense, Thyen plays all over the field.

"I have played on the line. I have played on the outside receiver and the inside receiver. It is fifty/fifty inside the box and outside the box. I don't have a set position. Our defense is diverse, but I would say I am in the box the most."

"I consider myself a linebacker," Thyen continued, "but in our defense, I am required to do a lot of defensive back things. If we play a running team, I am going to be in that C gap every time. Against a passing team, I am going to be in coverage 85 percent of the time."

Technically a linebacker, Thyen is focused on his coverage skills because of his multiple roles.

"I am focusing on watching the receiver's hip to close the gap better and break on the quarterback's arm action. That will make me a more dangerous player in route coverage. That is going to be one of my main focuses and is one of my weak spots right now. That is going to separate me from other guys so I can play that safety, cornerback, hybrid position. I am going to work on my football IQ so I know my job and everyone else's."

Off the field, Thyen expresses his artistic side.

"Whenever I have time, I love to play guitar. I like to get my buddies together, play guitar and harmonica, and sing. I play acoustic guitar and a lot of country, but if I hear a song I like, I try to learn it. It is relaxing."

His offseason has been largely focused on next fall.

"This winter, you would find me in the weight room every day. We do football stuff in the morning. I am running track right now – working on my speed. I am in the 4X100 relay and the 100. The relay team made it to State last year, and I think we are ninth in the State this year. I am going to be working with an academy working on footwork stuff. I do a lot of stuff by myself in my garage."

Football activities for Thyen are about to ramp up. "Recruiting has been fun. I don't have any offers, but I am going to some junior days. I have been to Mankato, Minnesota State Moorhead. I am going to the North Dakota State camp, the St. Thomas camp. Mostly DII and DIII stuff. Right now, St. Olaf, Wisconsin Oshkosh, and Minnesota State-Moorhead have been the main programs."
