MHSAA Evaluation Week: Five HAWK Evals

I am extremely impressed with Mehki's game as an incoming freshman. For starters, Mehki sports very quick feet and great change of direction. He has athleticism on par with some college prospect high school seniors, which is an excellent sign. In addition, Mehki has good hands. He's a hands catcher who does not rely on his body to secure balls. One thing I'd like to see Mehki improve in is his route running. He dances around too much. I don't know if he was cutting the line or just making sure he didn't get snubbed out of a rep, but Kobe made sure to get out there as much as possible. In all but one occasion, he won his rep. I don't love the overall fundamentals- Kobe does tend to bite on fakes, and his hips are all over the place. Though his change of direction is quite good and, he was able to consistently recover, break on the football, and force a PBU. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Potential college prospect. Within five yards, Mohammed made the receiver's life extremely difficult. Great job pressing and being someone that few WRs wanted to go up against. Plus, Mohammed showed solid change of direction and ball skills. I don't think there was a single rep where he wasn't in the play until the very end. <br>He did have to get his physicality coached down. There were a few plays downfield that definitely would have been flagged. Though, physicality is one of those things I'd much rather be coached down. It's harder to make a player more physical than it is for a physical player to take a step back. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I see that Mohammed earned an offer from Hope, and his Twitter bio says he has a 4.6 GPA. I watched him win against a few great defensive linemen. Zack's feet are very fast, his punch is solid, and his recovery is upper-tier. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Height remains the biggest hurdle. I'm afraid that teams are overlooking Zack because he's 6'1". Skill-wise, Zack is GLIAC level. I got a look at two reps, one of which I have on video. First off, he passes the eye test. 6'2" 220 seems to be accurate. Second, he was extremely quick in pass coverage, much faster than you'd expect from a player his size. Specifically, Lathon was very patient, had quick feet, and I loved his change of direction. Not many linebackers can effectively cover RBs who choose to run quick slants / outs, but Lathon could. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>On tape, I love Lathon's physicality. Several examples of him running straight through a ballcarrier. Considering his good tape and good camp performance, I'd say Lathon has a GLIAC floor.
