Eyes on Guys: Film Standouts

The old saying "tape don't lie" holds true in evaluating player performance. Film provides a far more comprehensive and objective assessment than any verbal description can offer. Over the past few days, I've reviewed game footage submitted directly to me and publicly available highlights from Virginia-based athletes.   It's crucial to remember that my evaluation is merely one data point in your journey. Don't allow my feedback, whether positive or negative, to define your potential. Instead, utilize this analysis as a roadmap for improvement. Focus on identifying areas where your performance can be refined and leverage this feedback to help you find the ideal college program that best matches your skills and aspirations.   With that in mind, several athletes from Virginia have particularly stood out to me based on their film.    At 5'10 ,240 lbs Ethan is a powerhouse. He makes plays all over the field playing multiple positions on the defensive line. He's a real asset to the team also playing guard. The first thing you notice on his film is his motor never giving up on plays. However, he relies a bit too much on brute force when he's rushing the passer. As is the case with most young defensive lineman Ethan needs to refine his pass rushing moves to have a counter to his use of power. Hand placement and eye discipline are also two area that could be improved however his motor on nonstop activity will definitely help him on the next level.     [player_tooltip player_id='1221142' first='Gabriel' last=''] is incredibly versatile – a real jack of all trades on the field. He shines at defensive end, linebacker and running back. His instincts and ability to read blocks are top-notch. He's already a strong defensive end but adding some advanced pass-rushing moves to his arsenal would make him even better. His ability to read the plays and beat linemen to the point of attack leads to a lot of tackles from his linebacker position. The linebacker spots seem to be his most natural position, based on film and his size. He does make many plays offensive due to his patience as a runner and his athleticism and physicality in the open field     Izayiah's exceptional physical presence (6'0", 275 lbs) as a freshman has already generated significant collegiate interest. His game film showcases the impressive combination of power, agility, and stamina expected from a player excelling at both defensive tackle and fullback. He consistently demonstrates the strength to overcome double teams and make tackles. His technique, particularly his hand placement and ability to counter chop blocks, is also noteworthy. While there's room for improvement in maintaining a lower center of gravity against stronger opponents – a common area for development in young varsity players – his overall performance is quite promising. His effectiveness in finishing blocks as a fullback is particularly impressive.     Linkin has unlimited potential as a pass rusher. His physical profile – encompassing speed, size, and notable arm length – presents a compelling foundation for success in this role. He displays adaptability, effectively transitioning between edge rusher and off-the-ball linebacker positions. While his current pass-rush technique repertoire could benefit from expansion, his exceptional reach and explosive first step consistently overcome offensive linemen. His youth and athleticism indicate substantial room for growth and refinement of his pass-rushing skills. Linken's impact extends beyond rushing the passer. He consistently disrupts opposing offenses, contributing significantly through tackles for loss, sacks, and effective kick blocking. His dedication and reliability are also evident in his contributions to special teams, including duties as a long snapper and a member of the hands team. Overall, he demonstrates a strong potential for significant contributions to the team.
