DORCHESTER | The Carolinas Combines Combine is the unofficial kickoff to the whirlwind of offseason activities for the Class of 2026 and several made the most of their opportunities under the watchful eyes of Shrine Bowl and North/South All-Star coaches on a pleasant Sunday morning at Woodland High School.

We will have additional coverage from the event but first, let's look at the award winners for the soon-to-be seniors.

MVP: [player_tooltip player_id='402503' first='Michael' last='Doe'] RB, North Augusta

Several names were discussed but the decision of overall MVP fell on the shoulders of the running back from North Augusta. The 5-foot-8 and 182-pounder flashed solid numbers across all the events. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.73 with a 34-inch vertical jump, 107-inch broad jump, a 4.46 Pro shuttle and bench pressed 185 pounds 14 times.

But he also flashed during individual work as well. He is coming off a season in which he rushed for 1,828 yards and he showed why with a quick, explosive burst and great hands coming out of the backfield. Doe (pictured) holds offers from East Carolina, Gardner-Webb and Charlotte right now.

“I feel good about things, and it was great to come out and see what my competition is this year,” Doe said. “Coming out here, I think I know what I need to work on. I need to get better in my 40 time and pro shuttle before I come back out here for something like this again.”

Leadership Award: [player_tooltip player_id='1592310' first='Quinn' last='Mahoney'] QB, Bishop England

Mahoney is a natural leader and has been for the Bishops since transferring over from nearby Oceanside prior to the 2024 season. The 6-foot-2, 197-pound rising senior helped Bishop England to a 9-3 record last season, and he showed why during individual skill work. He displayed a strong arm and hit receivers in stride several times and was helpful throughout the day at all the stations.

Fastest 40-yard Dash: [player_tooltip player_id='1639684' first='Tyree' last='Patton'] LB, Summerville

The Green Wave had plenty of talent last season that helped lead Summerville to a runner-up finish in the Class 5A, Division I state championship. A lot of seniors dotted the starting lineup, but Patton is one of the top returning players. The 5-foot-8, 202-pound linebacker clocked a 4.51 in the 40 and that showed why he was able to move sideline-to-sideline in making plays last season.

Fastest Pro Shuttle: [player_tooltip player_id='473010' first='Michael' last='Boulware'] LB, Gray Collegiate

Boulware has been a name we've heard a lot about since he was a freshman at Spring Valley. We all know the pedigree is there, but the 6-foot-2, 214-pound linebacker turned in one of the fastest times (4.28) ever recorded at the Carolinas Coaches Combine. Boulware is a tackling machine that plays in the middle of the War Eagles defense so his ability to change directions quickly is a huge key to his success.

Best Bench Press/Top Defensive Line: [player_tooltip player_id='1357963' first='Landon' last='Jackson'] DL, Berkeley

Jackson put a charge into those in attendance very quickly when he lifted 185 pounds on the bench press an impressive 32 times. That tied with Summerville's defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1734475' first='Jaden' last='Lofay'] with the most in the morning session, but the award went to Jackson because he was the lighter of the two at 5-foot-6, 229 pounds. Jackson carried that momentum over to the one-on-one drills when he seemed impossible to block because of his quick first move and overall strength.

Best Vertical: [player_tooltip player_id='402495' first='Jaylin' last='Grant'] WR, Ashley Ridge

Grant has transferred from Goose Creek to Ashley Ridge and could be a great fit in the Swamp Foxes wide open attack. He has a quarterback that threw for over 3,500 yards last season in [player_tooltip player_id='402509' first='Trevor' last='Kalisz'] and four of the top five receivers graduated. The 5-foot-10, 170-pounder showed he will be a big-time target with his 36.5-inch vertical and 72-inch wingspan.

Best Broad Jump: [player_tooltip player_id='1656629' first='Tyler' last='Davis'] DB, Hampton County

Davis had decent numbers all the way across the board, but he was the best in the broad jump (118). He also ran a 4.69 40, a 4.75 Pro Shuttle and 35.6 vertical with a 79.6 wingspan on his nearly 6-foot-1, 188.4-pound frame. Davis is coming off a junior season in which he recorded 30 tackles and a team-best four interceptions for a Hurricanes squad that finished 8-3.

Top Defensive Skill: [player_tooltip player_id='1165165' first='Jaylen' last='Singletary'] DB, Hampton County

Singletary did it all for the Hurricanes last season – he ran for 1,129 yards with 11 touchdowns, caught four passes that resulted in three TDs while adding 42 tackles and two interceptions on the defensive side of things. He's 5-foot-11 and 171.8 pounds and played strictly defensive back at the combine and was a lockdown corner. The rising senior also showed well last year in this even when he won the top Defensive Skill and Fastest Pro Shuttle events. This year, he was good across the board in the 40 (4.72), vertical (32) and broad Jump (113). He's poised for an outstanding final run beginning in August.

Top Defensive Combo: [player_tooltip player_id='1241751' first='Matthew' last='Payes'] LB, Wando

The 6-foot-1, 203-pound linebacker showed great coverage skills in the one-on-one portion of the combine. He recorded an interception against a tight end on an out pattern then knocked the ball away from a running back coming out of the backfield. He finished last season with 86 tackles and eight tackles for loss despite missing some time. Payes showed he can be just as disruptive in coverage as he was on making plays between the tackles.

Top Offensive Line: [player_tooltip player_id='1267220' first='Zion' last='Britt'] OL, Berkeley

The 6-foot-1, 307-pound Britt anchors the Stags offensive line at one of the tackle spots and he showed why during the offensive line work against defensive linemen. When he locked in on the defensive player, it was over, and they couldn't shake free. He plays with a nasty streak and that will be helpful as he will be the leader of a Berkeley offensive line that could average nearly 300 pounds this coming season.

Top Offensive Combo: [player_tooltip player_id='1656624' first='Nick' last='Buggie'] H-Back/TE, Lucy Beckham

Buggie was more of a blocker last season for the Bengals, but he showed he could be a pass-catching option as well. He's 6-foot-2, 208 pounds and showed good hands and ability to get open against linebackers. He could end up being used in a myriad of ways – as a pass-catching option or opening holes in the running game with his physical presence. It's the second year in a row Buggie garnered this honor.

Top Offensive Skill: [player_tooltip player_id='1394988' first='Aedan' last='McCarthy'] QB, Bluffton

With only eight quarterbacks in attendance, they were all able to receive plenty of reps during the one-on-one competition. The 6-foot-4, 206.8-pounder displayed a strong arm and pinpoint accuracy. He was able to hit receivers in stride while also fitting throws into small windows several times. McCarthy threw for 2,524 yards and 29 touchdowns a season ago and could see those numbers jump with two of his top three receivers returning as well.

Top Specialist: Eric Mittag P/K, Fort Dorchester and Nicholas Jones P/K, Colleton County

Two specialists were named as the honored seniors and underclassmen in the morning session. Mittag and Jones were off to the side for the most part but should be weapons for their respective teams this coming fall.
