With much of the event's groundwork already laid, it is time to discuss who-I-saw-do-what while at the Northeast Middle School Camp. Below are personal scouting notes from the action I witnessed.

Scout's Notes: Defensive Line

Aside from having an outstanding name shared with one of my favorite pasta sauces, Nicholas Carbonara had a strong performance. The 5'11" defensive lineman showed much promise simply due to the fact that he was able to get his hips through and around at times - a very advanced skill, especially for a prospect of his age. I would encourage Carbonara to continue to work on finishing once he gets past the offensive linemen as he works to get home... [player_tooltip player_id='1544737' first='Justin' last='Zammit'], who I am unsure whether or not he is related to DePaul's quarterback Derek, was quite the creative pass rusher. With his hands in the dirt, Zammit did a great job of varying the looks he threw at offensive lineman. It appears as though he was taught the old adage "pass rush with a plan." The most impressive move he attempted, and succeeded at, that I caught was the ghost move.

Although I typically cover high schoolers, one thing I can appreciate is a youngster with strong fundamentals. Although he measured just 5'3", 7th grade prospect [player_tooltip player_id='1589155' first='Tyler' last='Ross'] showed that he has received strong coaching as his efforts began with a very good stance. Doing so allowed him to have above-average get offs and balance. A good start to a young career... Another 2030 graduate that caught my attention was [player_tooltip player_id='1591245' first='Sean' last='Sanford']. Sanford had a bit of a mean streak to him. One rep he totally mowed through his matchup, burying him and pinning him to the ground like a lunchroom bully.

I was not sure what to initially think of [player_tooltip player_id='1590593' first='Connor' last='Smardin'], but as the afternoon rolled on I realized that he is awfully talented. Smardin had perhaps the best balance in his stance amongst those in attendance. Although this may not be the best approach in a camp that focuses on pass rush, it likely translates well to being a threat when defending either the run or the pass. Despite his balance, Smardin was quicker than I thought. This allowed him to get off the ball suddenly and put his offensive matchup on skates. Equipped with a solid rip move Smardin also has a good deal of raw power - power independent of his get off.
