Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1296774' first='Gage' last='Burki'] emerged as a breakout player on the Titan's defensive line. Playing in a solid Papio South DL rotation, Gage still racked up 28 tackles, 6.5 TFLs, and 2.5 sacks. Part of what stood out about Burki's tape was the aggressiveness with which he plays and his non-stop motor. He is constantly working his hands against blockers to disengage and continue his pursuit. Gage showed that he could implement various pass-rush strategies to break into the backfield, including attacking the edge and using inside moves to fly across his blocker's face.

[player_tooltip player_id='1192532' first='Landon' last='Dean'], TE/DL - Bridgeport - 6'3" 210 lbs

Bridgeport has a couple of rising stars in its 2027 group, one of whom we've discussed here. The other Bulldog prospect to watch is TE/DL [player_tooltip player_id='1192532' first='Landon' last='Dean'], who possesses the size and athleticism that coaches covet at the next level. Landon has a big frame at 6'3" and 210 pounds, and it looks like he could continue bulking up in the upcoming years. There isn't a lot of tape of Landon from this season, but the few clips available paint a favorable picture of him developing into a top-tier prospect. His size and strength allow him to fight off physical defensive backs and linebackers at the line of scrimmage. Big, strong hands that secure the ball at the catch point. I hope to get a better look at him with more tape on offense and defense. Dean ended his sophomore campaign with 24 receptions, 322 receiving yards, five receiving touchdowns, 37 tackles, 8 TFLs, a sack, and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.

Here's another disruptive sophomore to watch out for in the trenches. Cedar Catholic's [player_tooltip player_id='1086046' first='Will' last='Steffen'] had an impressive year two in which he helped the Trojans reach the quarterfinals of the playoffs while playing on the offensive and defensive line. On offense, he is aggressive at the point of attack with solid pop in his hands and the strength in his base to drive defenders off the ball. Defensively, I was impressed with Will's use of leverage and hand usage to overwhelm blockers and win at the line of scrimmage. Great pursuit and tackling. Steffen ended his sophomore campaign with 32 tackles, two TFLs, and two sacks.

Here's a player primed to take on a massive role next season after a strong sophomore campaign. In five games, RB [player_tooltip player_id='1192593' first='David' last='Washington'] rushed for 431 yards and five touchdowns on 60 carries, averaging 7.2 yards per carry. Washington had some very fun sophomore tape filled with shifty runs and explosive homerun TDs. David sees the field extremely well showing that he can find open lanes while possessing the quick change of direction and burst to hit those gaps. Very sharp cutback ability. Washington also has the top-end speed and acceleration to separate from defenses once he finds the open field. Big season coming up for David and the Wildcats.

[player_tooltip player_id='1085121' first='Rhett' last='Urzendowski'] (@rhetturz), QB/ATH - Brownwell-Talbot - 6'0" 185 lbs

A transfer from the Papio Monarch's, sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1085121' first='Rhett' last='Urzendowski'] wasted little time inserting himself into the Brownwell-Talbot's starting lineup. Rhett flashed a versatile skillset that earned him reps at QB, RB, LB, and even stepped up on special teams. He's a great athlete with the ball in his hands and will find ways to make plays through the air or on the ground. Rhett has excellent field vision and contact balance that make him an effective runner, while also displaying some nice twitch to make defenders miss in the open field. At QB, Urzendowski showed that he can make correct reads while under pressure and has the arm talent to deliver an accurate ball to all field levels. His ability to scramble as a quarterback will ensure that defenses are on their toes. Very nice athlete to continue monitoring in these upcoming seasons.
