The 2024 football season is in the books and was certainly a memorable one. Over the last two weeks, we've been putting out a ton of postseason content and we're not close to slowing down anytime soon. Today, we're putting the spotlight on the best freshman in the state with our 2024 Freshman Of The Year award. This is the third year that we've done this in the postseason and it's the first year that a quarterback is the winner. Washington freshman quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='473891' first='Creed' last='Barrett'] is this year's winner after helping lead the Warriors to a third consecutive state championship and continue their lengthy winning streak, which now sits at 44 consecutive games.

Barrett threw for over 3,300 yards and 38 touchdowns with only two interceptions on the season. That touchdown to interception ratio is one of the best in the state and it came in his freshman season. And we don't have stats from every single team, so it could honestly be at the very top. It's still incredibly early in his high school career but Barrett is off to a great start and has a chance to be at the top or near the top of all the state's passing records by the time his career comes to an end in a few years.

Coming into this season, we knew about Barrett after watching him perform incredibly well (took home a pair of QB MVP awards) at our Prep Redzone Next camps. We also watched Barrett at a team camp back in May, before his freshman year of high school even began and it looked like he could be the guy at QB1 right from the start. And when August rolled around, Barrett was the starter for the Warriors and he was replacing a three-year starter at the position in Major Cantrell so the shoes were pretty big.

Barrett announced himself as one of the top guys in the state immediately. In week one, Washington would get pushed to double overtime against a Sulphur team that would make it all the way to the Class 3A state championship game. Barrett threw for well over 400 yards on 26-37 passing with three touchdowns. And one of those touchdowns came in the second overtime, when he found tight end [player_tooltip player_id='353411' first='Nate' last='Roberts'] for the game-winning touchdown and to keep Washington's winning streak in tact. Like we said, we knew Barrett was legit coming into the season but that erased any possible doubts about the young signal caller.

The Washington freshman quarterback would help guide the Warriors back to the state championship game, which was their fifth consecutive appearance in Edmond. And in a low-scoring game, Barrett would have to battle on every drop back against an athletic Millwood defense. But he found Roberts again in the end zone to help Washington secure a 7-6 victory. Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how Barrett looks in this offense without guys like Roberts and some of the other senior playmakers on the Washington offense. But Barrett is also just scratching the surface on what he'll be in three years.

Barrett recently picked up his first D1 offer from SMU and as we publish this, he's down in San Antonio participating in the Navy All American combine. The recruiting process has already taken off for Barrett and it will not slow down anytime soon. The fact that his first offer is from a program that made the college football playoff is another indicator of the type of player and prospect Barrett is.
