<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>ROSWELL –</strong> We're going to have a rematch in the Class 5A state championship game.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Roswell punched its ticket to Thanksgiving weekend's title clash against rival Artesia with a closer-than-the-final-score indicates 49-21 victory over gutty Gadsden Saturday afternoon at the Wool Bowl.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Artesia, which trounced Mayfield, 50-14, in the other 5A semifinal on Saturday, has won back-to-back 5A state championships, including last season's 35-21 victory over Roswell at the Bulldog Bowl that ruined the previously unbeaten Coyotes' dreams of a perfect season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Saturday, Roswell jumped out to an early 14-0 lead over Gadsden before the Panthers battled back to within seven points at halftime (28-21). Roswell began to pull away in the latter stages of the third quarter when 6-foot-3, 245-pound DE/TE <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1118051' first='Mason' last='Greathouse']</strong>, who was offered by Eastern New Mexico and re-offered by Western New Mexico on Friday, caught the second of his three TD passes.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Roswell led, 35-21, after three quarters and scored a pair of TDs in the fourth to secure their spot in the 5A title game. The first came on arguably the game's most bizarre play when Roswell QB <strong>Jacob Palomino</strong> flipped a wobbly fourth-down pass towards the end zone as he was being tackled. Somehow, the ball found the welcoming arms of a Coyotes WR at the goal line.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The officials conferred and ruled the ball had broken the plane while the receiver had clear possession. Greathouse's third TD grab of the day made it 49-21 with 4 minutes left.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Roswell outscored Gadsden, 21-0, in the second half.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In the first quarter, Roswell scored on <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1118273' first='Xai' last='Carrasco']</strong>'s Pick-6 return for a TD and took advantage of a fumbled punt snap to score again on <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1594192' first='Jaylon' last='Cloud']</strong>'s 18-yard run for a 14-0 lead. Gadsden began to fight back when they scored on a TD pass to <strong>Juan Carlos Enriquez</strong> with 8.4 seconds left in the first quarter.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Palmino's dynamic TD run less than 3 minutes into the second quarter gave Roswell a 21-7 lead. Gadsden RB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='615673' first='Alfredo' last='Andrade']</strong> powered over from 5 yards out to cut the deficit to 21-14 with 4:36 left in the second quarter.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Neither team was done scoring, however. Greathouse's first TD reception of the game made it 28-14 with 1:27 left in the second quarter. Gadsden took the ensuing kickoff and roared down the field, scoring with 54.4 seconds left until halftime when <strong>Steve Morales</strong> caught a pass in the end zone. But that TD turned out to be the final points of the game scored by the Panthers.
