Here, I start calling my shots and placing some grades on impressive prospects in Georgia and Alabama who have caught my eye recently. Expect this to be a recurring series going forward, as it gives me a chance to release which players I'm tracking and highlight their best traits.

Athletic indicators are off the charts for Umenyiora. He is a verified track and basketball athlete, he is the son of an NFL pro bowler, and he comes in at 6'2 185. He is very strong in his frame and shows impressive physicality all throughout his game, which is notable for a prospect newer to football. Looks best in press coverage where he uses his length and strength to win at the line. He is a fluid enough athlete to flip his hips and run down the sidelines. Speed might be a drawback at this stage, but he has enough to outmatch his current level of competition. More time in football strength and agility should help add speed.

Umenyiora doubles as the leading receiver for his team. He catches the ball away from his body and will fight with his hands against DBs for leverage.

Umenyiora is a very impressive athlete with his best football ahead of him. He has the length, strength, and temperament to be an efficient press corner. If he can get his 100M speed below the 12-second mark, his floor will be raised another notch. I am banking on the upside.

Tall, lanky, athletic DB prospect. More of a glider, projecting him at safety given his size. Elite tackler. Elite mirroring skills, settling down in an alley against a ball carrier. Strikes hard for a thin prospect. Hits hard in the midsection and plays with good pad level as a striker.

More equipped to play zone coverage than man coverage. He is smooth and fluid in his backpedal and naturally changes direction. Looks best when coming downhill, where he can click and close the same way he does as a tackler. His length allows him to threaten the catch point. He can press up and play man if needed. If he can match footwork at the line, he can stick and stall WRs with his length. But again, better equipped to play zone coverage.

Speed might be the biggest concern, but not due to a lack of ability, more so a lack of evidence. Most of his tape is done in the short area. When he does run longer distances, he relies on his long strides to gallop across the field and eat up grass. Still, he arrives on time and often aggressively to a spot.

Late-bloomer football prospect with several present athletic indicators. Verified track and basketball athlete. Listed in the 6'0 160-165 range, has plenty of room to add good weight.

Gillis is a playmaker across the field. Often lines up in the box as a nickel/safety. Tremendous feel as a tackler. He plays low to the ground, keeps his feet active, and takes good angles to the football. Might lag behind a little when changing from a shuffle to a sprint, but possesses the speed and range to compensate. Not much of a striker with his light frame, but shadows the ball carrier well in the open field and strikes with good pad level. Football speed is noticeable on tape, frequently chasing the football down across the formation and down the field. He has clocked 21.6 MPH GPS speed.

He plays with good patience and instincts in coverage. He is rarely out of position, and does a good job of putting his head down and running hard to recover if he gets beat at the point of attack. When in position to make a play, he shows that he is capable of finding the football and attacking through the hands. His straight-line speed is put on display, sticking to the hip of receivers when he runs downfield. Better suddenness and COD will benefit him in coverage.

Versatile prospect with production as a receiver and a defender. Projects as a WR. 5'11 160 frame projects best to the slot, but he can flex outside thanks to his ability to consistently get behind safeties, as shown on tape. Showcases excellent deception in his routes. Will slow-play and stack footwork to create hesitation and get DBs off-platform. As a result, he often slips past zones and finds himself wide open. He is bouncy after the catch, staying light on his feet and occasionally showing creative ways to make defenders miss.

As a defender, he has produced against the ball. He aggressively flies to the football as a tackler and plays with tons of range.

Jermaine Tyler Jr is another two-way playmaker, but likely projects as a DB. Flashes a lot to like as an athlete. Clocked verified 11.36 speed in the 100M this spring and 22.80 in the 200M. He sticks out like a sore thumb when you watch South Paulding, gliding across the field and "looking the part" at 6'1 160. There is a lot of room for muscular growth as well.

Puts all of his traits on display as a returner. His speed outmatches the competition, forcing bad angles and weak tackling attempts. He is a fluid athlete with some bounce in his step, which gives him access to cut-back lanes in space. He shows some explosiveness as a returner, which only raises his floor.

Ball skills are a strength at this point. As a WR, he frequently catches the ball away from his body and makes contested catches. From his safety spot, he comes downhill in a hurry and uses his length to attack and play through the football. Most of his defensive tape is downhill, but he is certainly fluid enough in his hips to turn and run when needed. If he sticks at safety, he will have to add more mass to hold up consistently as a tackler.

Kyle Carpenter is another dual-sport athlete, doubling as a productive basketball player. He is one of the unsung heroes on a loaded Buford squad. I couldn't find verified athletic measurements, but I can confirm with his basketball tape that he can tomahawk dunk at 6'2 200.

Carpenter immediately shot up my board with his performance against Milton. Twice, he rose up over SEC corner commits, winning the vertical battle and making acrobatic catches while in tough spots. On tape, he consistently shows the physicality to fight for positioning and the leaping ability to go up and make a catch. He is an obvious jump-ball threat, and that would be his calling at the next level.

He isn't a burner, but is tough to tackle in the open field. He is a thick-bodied WR and can turn into a bowling ball if he gets going downhill. Right now, he is a WR projection. However, if he could get up around 225 or so, a move to TE given his speed would be intriguing. Regardless, Carpenter is a late-bloomer with D1 tools. He is massively underrated and would be a sneaky pickup out of Buford.

Gurley is a breakout candidate on the offensive line for Grissom. Official measurements have varied, but his current listing of 6'5 270 looks accurate for the most part. He currently plays RT and looks to be a good enough athlete to stick at a tackle spot.

His pass-set on tape is clean. He gets back quickly, plays with a firm base, and lands his punches well. He is fast on his feet, allowing him to shadow pass rushers well. His grip strength frequently flashes on tape. He steers players off their base, and often completely off their feet. Can sometimes miss initially, but has the speed to recover well. It looks like he can be driven back onto his heels at times. Added play strength in the future will allow him to anchor better against bigger and faster pass rushers.

Looks capable against the run. Most of the time, he is sealing a defender on the edge. Appears flexible enough to drop his pad level on down blocks, but will need to prove that on tape. Added mass will help his drive.

He is raw. Still, you can't teach his size, and he plays with the physical temperament needed to maximize his tools. I am banking on the upside he provides.

I was first introduced to Donte Grant in the Corky Kell Classic, where he had some impressive rushes and made a name for himself. Since then, he has become one of my favorite 2027 RBs in Georgia. Grant comes in around 5'10 160-170. He is still thin, but looks more filled out than he did as a freshman.

You wouldn't tell by looking at him, but his ability to break tackles and stay on his feet through contact is the most impressive part of his game. He runs very hard and drops his shoulder at the end of runs, protecting his chest and making the target smaller for defenders.

He is a sudden athlete and will dance to find running lanes and make his way through congested areas. He is a glider in the open field with still developing straight-line speed. Still, he is light enough on his feet now to create his own yards in a classification with speedy defenders.

The only question going forward is how he continues to grow athletically. Regardless, I love the way he runs for a smaller back and think there is plenty of upside here.

Here, I start calling my shots and placing some grades on impressive prospects in Georgia and Alabama who have caught my eye recently. Expect this to be a recurring series going forward, as it gives me a chance to release which players I'm tracking and highlight their best traits.
