The Perkins-Tryon Demons had a season to remember in 2023. They came into last season as a top four team in the Class 3A preseason rankings and they certainly lived up to all the preseason hype. They would go 11-2 and make it all the way to the Class 3A semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Lincoln Christian. The Demons would begin the season with 2-1 record in non-district play, with the only loss coming to Marlow in overtime and Marlow would also make it all the way to the semifinals. The Demons entered district play with a lot of confidence and they played like it. They won each district contest by double digits and ran away with the district crown. Their defense was absolutely dominant in 2023, giving up less than ten points on nine occasions. The Demons would roll to a 9-1 record in the regular season and kept that dominant play going into the playoffs. They would beat up on Lone Grove in the first round before absolutely dismantling Holland Hall 65-0 in the quarterfinals. That would clinch their first semifinal appearance in nearly 25 years and they gave Lincoln Christian a good fight but would come up short, losing 17-10. They might have come up short of the ultimate goal but there's no denying that it was a memorable season and we think that the 2023 team should go down as one of the better teams in school history.

2024 OUTLOOK

At this time last year, we were talking about Perkins-Tryon being one of the best teams in Class 3A. They had a very experienced and talented senior class and they had the potential of making plenty of noise in 2023. But that senior class has graduated and the Demons are looking to reload for another run in 2024. They lost the majority of their starters on both sides of the ball but we're very curious what the defense is going to look like this season. They bring back five starters on that side of the ball but this was a defense that was nothing short of dominant last season. They held a Lincoln offense that averaged nearly 50 points per game to a season-low of 17 points. They gave up just nine points per game total in 2023. So the defense finding new guys to step into those roles will be a huge key. But they do bring back five starters and they are not starting over. Four starters also return to the offensive side of the ball and we really like some of the guys they have coming back in the running game. They have to replace a very productive star at running back but just like with the defense, they aren't lacking talent there either. This was an offense that averaged nearly 40 points per game in 2023 and are looking for those new names to step up and step up in a hurry. They are in a tough district but this year it feels like every district is tough in Class 3A. We're definitely not counting out Perkins-Tryon making the 2024 season a memorable one as well.

We mentioned earlier in the preview how we liked the personnel and production that the Demons bring back with the running game and it starts on the line of scrimmage. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1369768' first='Corbin' last='Reedy'] returns for his third season as a starter for Perkins-Tryon. That experience on an offense that brings back just four starters is invaluable as we head into the 2024 football season. And the Demons have a couple running backs that can really rack up the yards but Reedy will be the guy paving the way. And if he can become more of a leader this season and get those new guys on the line of scrimmage to work together as a unit, their rushing attack should be just fine.

Just like with Reedy, experience is the name of the game for senior standout [player_tooltip player_id='1369771' first='Karsen' last='Houston'] and he brings that experience to the defensive side of the ball. The senior is going into his third season as a starter and will return to the secondary to tear things up as a defensive back. The Demons have definitely lost some really talented players from the secondary to graduation but having a guy like Houston returning is a big plus. On the experience alone, Houston will bring a lot to the table this fall. And like we mentioned earlier, this is a Perkins-Tryon defense that isn't completely starting over on defense. Houston and company will want to pick up where they left off last year.

Earlier this year, we put the spotlight on junior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1161913' first='Wyatt' last='Atkinson'] because we think he could be an absolute breakout star for the Demons this season. Atkinson would absolutely shine in 2023, despite being on a running back depth chart that was loaded with talent. He would finish the year with nearly 700 yards and ten touchdowns on the ground. Needless to say, he was explosive when the ball was in his hands and in 2024, we think his production might explode as well. He's going to get more carries and with those carries should come more yards and trips to the end zone. It wouldn't surprise us if he emerges as one of the top running backs in 3A football.

2024 SCHEDULE/GAMES TO CIRCLE

Sept. 6th - AT Dewey
Sept. 13th - Cushing
- In week two, Perkins-Tryon will have their home opener against familiar foe Cushing. This has been a series that has been relatively even over the last two decades. In fact, it's really close as the Demons are 9-11 against the Tigers over the last twenty meetings. That includes a 21-7 win over Cushing last season that would snap a three-game losing streak in the series. Both teams in this match-up are very intriguing because both feel like they could be flying under the radar right now in their respective classes.
Sept. 20th - AT Daniel Webster
Sept. 27th - Sulphur
- It doesn't get more challenging than this for a district opener. Perkins-Tryon will host Sulphur in week four to kick off the district slate and this is a Sulphur team that is in the preseason top five for Class 3A. In fact, they are one of the top contenders for the state title so for the Demons, this is an ultimate measuring stick game. They are going to know exactly where they stand as they face one of the top teams in the class. This should be a very fun game to watch because both teams love to run the ball and be physical.
Oct. 4th - AT Mannford
Oct. 11th - Seminole
Oct. 17th - AT Victory Christian
Oct. 25th - Lone Grove
Nov. 1st - AT Bristow
- By the time this week nine contest rolls around, the Demons are going to know exactly where they are in the district standings and this Bristow match-up on the road could mean a lot in terms of playoff seeding. Bristow is coming into this season with a first year head coach and a new look on offense but they'll provide the Demons with a challenge. This is the first time these two teams have met in over a decade. They were district opponents from 2010-2013 and the Demons went 4-0 during that stretch.
Nov. 8th - McLoud

NOTABLE

There is no debate in our minds, Perkins-Tryon has been one of the more consistent programs in Class 3A for over a decade now. The Demons would punch their ticket to the playoffs for the 14th consecutive season in 2023 and like we've mentioned a few times already, they went further than they've ever been during that stretch. Their semifinal appearance was their first semifinal appearance since 2000 and it was just their second trip to the final four in school history. They have been a team that has consistently made the playoffs, more times than not made it to the quarterfinals and then had the season come to an end there. In 2023, they were able to break through and make it to the semifinals and came close to making a trip to Edmond. Now, they look to reload and do it again. We have no doubt that the Demons will once again be in the mix for a playoff spot and when they get there, all of those new faces will be experienced when November rolls around and they could make more noise than people are anticipating.
