Following a memorable season in 2022 that saw the Muldrow Bulldogs get back to winning football and a playoff appearance, the 2023 season was definitely a tough one. After losing their star player to graduation following the 2022 season, Muldrow took a step back, going 1-9 last season. It was a tough first year for head coach Logan Coatney but the Bulldogs believe that 2024 will be a bounce back year for the program. Last season, the year began with a tough 21-14 loss to rival Roland in the season opener. They would bounce back with a 38-14 win over Tahlequah Sequoyah the following week but unfortunately, that would be their only win in 2023. They had close games with Checotah, Spiro and Locust Grove but the season came to an end with a 1-9 record and an early entrance to the offseason. Muldrow promoted Coatney to head coach after Brandon Ellis returned to Gore to become their head coach. The first season definitely involved some growing pains with a team that was incredibly young but now, it's time to reload and shift those growing pains into winning football. And Muldrow has some guys to make that happen in 2024.

2024 OUTLOOK

The Bulldogs bring back the majority of their starters coming into the 2024 season and that's a great start to turning things around in a major way. When we look at the Bulldogs on paper, it's hard to ignore the offensive side of the ball. They bring back eight starters from last year's team and are looking to make a major jump after averaging just 13 points per game last season. And when you look at Muldrow on offense, the conversation has to start with their playmaker with the last name Collins. And two years ago, the Bulldogs had another Collins running around on offense that led them to an 8-3 season and a trip to the playoffs. Muldrow is hoping to repeat that process in 2024. And he'll also be a star for the Bulldogs on the defensive side of the ball. They bring back eight starters on defense and just like with the offense, they expect to improve greatly after last season and make sure the growing pains they went through last year were worth it. Muldrow will lean on their experience early on as they'll have to be road warriors. Three of their first four games take place on the road and the district slate is incredibly tough. There's a good chance that a team with a winning record comes up short of a playoff spot with all the firepower in this district. Muldrow is looking to be one of the teams not left out of the postseason.

Senior running back and linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1367380' first='Jacob' last='Gregory'] returns for his final season in the Muldrow uniform. Last season, Gregory had a solid season on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. As a running back, Gregory would finish the year with nearly 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns but we expect his production to go up this season after just 64 carries in 2023. On defense, Gregory finished his junior season with over 50 tackles and just like with offense, there's very little reason to think that his numbers won't go up there as well. Gregory is one of several Muldrow standouts that looks to be just as valuable on both sides of the ball.

We mentioned earlier in the preview how Muldrow will have the benefit of having a Collins standout returning. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1161908' first='Teaguen' last='Collins'] is that guy and he is on our short list of players that we think are primed for breakout seasons. We saw glimpses of that last season when he lined up at wide receiver and also played in the secondary and returned kicks. This season, we expect Collins to do much more because more times than not, he's going to be the best athlete on the field for either team. Collins' older brother Trendon was a standout just a few years ago and Teaguen is next. Needless to say, the ceiling is incredibly high and we're looking forward to seeing what he does this fall.

2024 SCHEDULE/GAMES TO CIRCLE

Sept. 5th - Roland
- The season opener is always a date to circle and for Muldrow, it's a renewal of their rivalry with Roland. Last season, they lost to the Rangers, 21-14 and that evened up the series over the last twenty meetings. Each team holds a 10-10 record in the last two decades but the Rangers have been on a roll recently. They've beaten Muldrow four out of the last five years with the only Muldrow victory during that stretch coming in the opener of the 2022 season. The Bulldogs hope a win here is the prelude to a playoff trip.
Sept. 13th - AT Waldron, AR.
Sept. 20th - AT Spiro
Sept. 27th - AT Eufaula
Oct. 4th - Checotah
Oct. 11th - AT Idabel
- The second half of the regular season kicks off in week six with a road trip to southeastern Oklahoma. The Bulldogs will face an Idabel team that is ranked in the preseason top ten in Class 3A this fall. This also is right in the middle of Muldrow's toughest month of the season in October. They face two ranked teams and two squads in Checotah and Holland Hall that bring a lot of firepower to the field. This week six clash with Idabel will be their first meeting since being district foes in 2016 and 2017.
Oct. 17th - Lincoln Christian
Oct. 25th - AT Holland Hall
Nov. 1st - Stigler
- After a brutal October, Muldrow is going to know exactly where they stand with the playoff scenarios in this district. They'll host Stigler in week nine and the Bulldogs will be hungry as a win will keep Muldrow in the playoff race. These two teams have been district foes for the last two years and the two meetings were split. Stigler shut out Muldrow 34-0 while the Bulldogs won 41-33 in 2022. Stigler comes into this season under the guidance of a first year head coach and Muldrow will look to get a big win.
Nov. 8th - Locust Grove

NOTABLE

As we've mentioned a few times in this preview, Muldrow wants to get back to winning football and punch their ticket to the playoffs. But for the Bulldogs as a program, they want more than that. It's been a while since Muldrow won a playoff game. Despite making eight trips to the postseason since 2000, the Bulldogs have always been one and done, with first round exits. In fact, Muldrow has lost in the first round in each of the last 15 appearances in the playoffs. And we're coming up on four decades since their last playoff win. 1985 was the last time Muldrow won a playoff game and in that season, they made a run to the Class 3A semifinals. And coincidentally, 1985 was actually the only year in which Muldrow won a playoff game so the Bulldogs are looking to build that consistency and start winning games when they make it to the postseason. But first, they need to get there.
