The 2023 football season began a new era for the Enid Plainsmen. Cameron Conder took over as head coach of the Plainsmen after nearly a decade with the school. He became head coach after Rashaun Woods left in the offseason for a job in Texas. The Plainsmen would drop two of their first three games and the win was a close 29-27 victory over Ponca City. The Plainsmen would enter district play looking to punch their ticket to the playoffs for the second straight year. They would fall to Jenks in the district opener but beat Moore in week five with an exciting 49-42 victory. After three straight losses in the middle of the season, the Plainsmen would beat Southmoore in week nine and with that put them in a position to finish in the top six from their district. They fell to Norman North in the final week of the season but they would qualify for the playoffs in the final spot from this district. They met Edmond Santa Fe on the road in the first round and would fall 41-12 and the season came to an end at 3-8. But it's hard to suggest that Enid didn't have a successful season after they made the playoffs. They had a first year head coach and had to replace the majority of their starters from their 2022 squad that made it to the 6A-1 quarterfinals. Now, Enid is in a position to take the next step and climb up the district standings in 2024.

2024 OUTLOOK

The Plainsmen are in a good position to make it to the playoffs for the third consecutive season. That would be the longest playoff streak since Enid made seven consecutive appearances from 1985-1991. Last season, they made the playoffs despite having a starting lineup full of new starters. That's the opposite coming into 2024. Eight starters return on the offensive side of the ball and we really like the experience and overall production they bring back on that side of the ball. The offense is going to be headlined by a wide receiver who has the potential to be one of the best in 6A-1 this fall. He's definitely flying under the radar right now but that won't last long. Defensively, the Plainsmen also bring back seven starters on that side of the ball. And if Enid can take a giant step forward on that side of the ball, the Plainsmen could end up taking a step up as a squad altogether. Enid has a schedule that sets up for them to potentially have a winning record in 2024. The district is going to be incredibly difficult but that's life in Class 6A-1. But we really like Enid's chances in the second half of the regular season. The schedule will set up for the Plainsmen to finish strong and make a push, not only for a playoff spot, but climb those district standings and finish with a higher seed and potentially a home playoff game.

Senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1360004' first='Aidan' last='Robinson'] returns as QB1 for the Plainsmen following a strong junior season. Robinson will benefit greatly from a strong core of wide receivers that are returning in 2024. That could mean that Robinson makes a significant jump in terms of overall production in the passing game. Robinson's return will also help as the Plainsmen look to replace some productive and important parts from last year's offense. Robinson is going to be a name to watch in Class 6A-1 this season. He'll lean on that experience and talent around him to make some noise in 2024.

Junior standout [player_tooltip player_id='1359999' first='Tyson' last='Kennedy'] returns and Enid's coaches are very excited about his potential moving forward. Kennedy was on the radar going into his sophomore season and he lived up to the hype. Now, as the Plainsmen go into the 2024 season, it wouldn't be surprising to see Kennedy expand his workload and what he brings to the table for Enid. On offense, Kennedy could see time at running back and wide receiver. On defense, he returns at safety and on special teams, he'll return kicks. Kennedy has the potential to be the best player in terms of overall production on this year's squad.

Earlier in the preview, we mentioned how the strength of the offense would be a certain playmaker returning at wide receiver. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1077958' first='Zyire' last='Allen'] is that guy and we cannot wait to see what kind of season he has this fall. He was incredibly productive in the Enid offense last season and he's clearly going to be one of the top athletes on the field, every time he steps on the field. Allen is also a really good basketball player for Enid and that athleticism definitely translates to what he's able to do on the football field. Allen is going to be one of the top receivers in 6A-1 this season.

Aug. 30th - Ponca City
Sept. 5th - AT Lawton
Sept. 12th - Stillwater
- Enid and Stillwater used to be district foes from 2004-2017 and that spanned from the old 6A to 6A-2 and now they're facing off in non-district play. They haven't met since that 2017 meeting and Enid is looking to turn things around in this series. They've lost the last five to the Pioneers and Stillwater is once again one of the top teams in Class 6A-2 after back to back state title game appearances. Enid could take a lot of momentum into district play with a win here in week two.
Sept. 27th - AT Deer Creek
Oct. 4th - Mustang
Oct. 10th - AT Norman
- In week six, Enid goes on the road to kick off the second half of the regular season against Norman. This begins a stretch where the Plainsmen will have three games that are definitely winnable and can help them punch their ticket to the playoffs. It starts here with the road game against Norman. They were district opponents from 2018-2021 but haven't met since the 2021 season. The Tigers controlled the series with Enid when they last met, winning all four match-ups.
Oct. 17th - Bixby
Oct. 25th - Edmond North
Nov. 1st - AT Jenks
Nov. 8th - AT Moore
- In the final week of the regular season, it will feel like the playoffs start a week early as Enid hits the road to face Moore in a game that could decide a playoff spot. The Plainsmen beat the Lions in each of the last two seasons and last year's meeting was a high-scoring affair that saw Enid winning 49-42. Both teams have a lot of firepower coming back on offense this season so we could see another shootout brewing between these two. And it could be as simple as win and you're in.

NOTABLE

Since the split in Class 6A-1 back in 2014, Enid has been searching for those consistent trips to the playoffs. Now, with the expanded 6A-1 playoffs, it's starting to happen more and with that, comes opportunities to win big games in November. In 2022, Enid beat Edmond Memorial in the first round before falling to Bixby in the quarterfinals. That first round victory was Enid's first playoff win since the Austin Box days, when they made a run to the 2006 state championship game. We've seen in this sport that you have to crawl, then walk, then run. You rarely see a team go from not winning playoff games to making a run when it matters most. Enid is accomplishing the first step by making it to the playoffs in the last two seasons. Now, the next step is to start winning those first round games and then focusing on taking down one of the 6A-1 heavy hitters in the following round. As one of the smallest schools in the class, it might seem like an uphill battle but it's not an impossible one.
