Every year during May, Future Star rosters are being configured for this awaited rivalry game between neighboring states Tennessee and Kentucky. Come June it's time to back up all the talk and anticipation. Like clock work, the yellow flags stay in the air with passions running high and due to limited practice time to allow these young men to click. Outside of the excuses, you can still see talent for what it really is. Now that the dust has settled I want to share my notes on the Kentucky running back group and how they competed during their 40-18 win.

All-Purpose back Boyd outshined when it mattered most earning Co-MVP in this star studded game. He went 21 yards on 5 carries. However, a 10 yard scamper was called back due to holding on his second carry. Jett most impressively, hauled in two short receptions to get the momentum going on his team. One of which was a highlighted touchdown run after catch which showed off his open field moves and power in his legs by breaking multiple tackles. I would argue his screen play cemented his MVP whispers by not being denied a 10 yard touchdown. For four quarters Mr. Boyd was locked in and played with a chip on his shoulder. He is elusive, has a mean throw/stiff arm, and slippery on the outskirts. I will definitely be keeping watch as he transitions into power house Meece.

Ladd is a physical runner that really is at his best when shoulders are square inside the tackles. His already made high school frame catches the eye, especially in pads. He touched the ball 6 times for a hard fought 18 yards. The first carry went for +7 and every opportunity after that was hard fought to stay on the positive side. As always, with so many penalties it was hard to get into a rhythm but his presence was still felt and displayed a willingness to block.

With very few chances to showcase his full potential in the game, Elijah was still able to etch out 19 yards on carries of +1, +5, and his last touch went for 13 yards on a very physical run that placed his team inside the 10 yard line. Overall Bishops bright side is that he can play big and small. He possesses the quickness and footwork to be a threat on the perimeter and also runs with an attitude to eat up short distances.

Trae Martin

Martin had the most rushing production with 32 yards on 4 carries. Most notable was his first carry off tackle out of the full house set. Then after a turnover with less than a minute to close out the contest, he pops a 24 yards run right down the center of the defense that put his team in scoring territory, but Kentucky decided to get into victory formation and let the clock run out. Trae is a bigger back with pro style tangibles and vision. Would have liked to see him get involved more but its always hard to stick to the script in games like these and I feel it won't be long before he gets his due at the next level.
