When you look back on the 2023 season, you can see an 0-10 record and make judgements from there. But there were also some things that Southmoore could take away and as they move into a new season and a new class, they could turn things around in a big way. The Southmoore Sabercats came into the 2023 season following a 1-9 season in 2022. The Sabercats would push Putnam City North in week two and fell 37-36. That would actually be the closest game throughout the rest of the season. It always felt like the Sabercats were taking two steps forward and three steps back. Eventually, the season came to an end with an 0-10 record. So as far as a 2023 season recap, we don't need to put this one under a microscope. Southmoore will look to reload and start fresh as the 2024 season begins. There's no debate or any doubt that this program has been struggling over the last few years, but a change in class could really open the door for the Sabercats to start the process of getting back to winning.

2024 OUTLOOK

So the 2023 season is in the past and now the Sabercats start looking towards the future. They bring back half of their starters from last season and while they lost some key contributors to graduation and transfers, this is still a team that has some guys ready to take that next step. Six starters return on the offensive side of the ball. When we look at their offense, we like what they have coming back on the offensive line. If they can build around the line of scrimmage, they should be able to improve on that side of the ball. The defense also brings back six starters and similar to the offense, we think the conversation starts on the defensive line. We like the players they bring back this season on the line of scrimmage and they could end up setting the tone for this year. But the biggest thing to look forward to for Southmoore this season is their move down to 6A-2. After running into a wall of the largest schools in the state, they now move down to 6A-2 and could see an instant improvement in the win-loss column. We think that this could be a bounce back season for the Sabercats but they are going to have to earn it on the field.

Senior offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='931280' first='Cale' last='Hornbeck'] is a prospect in the state's 2025 class that we think is flying under the radar. And that includes us in that conversation. Hornbeck is a prospect to watch moving forward at that position and we think he could be primed for a monster season this fall. Hornbeck leads a Southmoore offensive line that brings back the majority of their starters. They have a lot of experience coming back and Hornbeck and company could pave the way for a big season for this offense. We like some of the young players that Southmoore has coming up at the skill positions and having an established player like Hornbeck up front will help.

We mentioned earlier that we like both sides of the line of scrimmage for Southmoore and while Hornbeck leads the way for the offense, we like junior [player_tooltip player_id='1179993' first='Nakwaine' last='Carter'] on the defensive side. Carter emerged last season as a legitimate prospect in the state's 2026 class. He's already on the radar for college coaches and has picked up a handful of offers. He's not flying under the radar as much anymore but we think that he could end up elevating his play this season. Carter will lead a defensive line that could be very disruptive throughout the year. If Southmoore gets strong play from the guys up front, that will set them up for success down the line.

Southmoore lost a two-year starter at quarterback to a move but they added one as well. Sophomore quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='445315' first='Taven' last='Hayes'] steps into the Southmoore program after spending his freshman season at Moore. Hayes is a guy that we knew about prior to his freshman season and he had a good 2023 season at the non-varsity level. Now, it's his turn to step into the spotlight and we'll see what he can do with the opportunity. Hayes definitely has the talent to be a good quarterback in 6A-2 football. There might be some growing pains and a learning curve early on. But we think that by the time October and November rolls around, he'll be very comfortable.

Sept. 6th - AT Westmoore
- The season opener is always a date that you have to circle on the calendar and the Sabercats are hungry to begin a new year. And they'll start this season against their two Moore rivals with a week one game against Westmoore. The Jaguars have owned this series lately and Southmoore will look to turn it around. Westmoore has won nine straight in the series but the Jaguars will have a new head coach this season. These two were district opponents in the last two weeks.
Sept. 13th - Moore
Sept. 20th - Putnam City North
Sept. 27th - U.S. Grant
Oct. 4th - AT Lawton Eisenhower
- We reach the halfway mark of the 2024 season when week five is in the books. Southmoore will hit the road and square off with Lawton Eisenhower. Like Southmoore, Lawton Eisenhower is hopeful that a new class will help them get back to the playoffs and potentially much more. The Eagles are moving up from Class 5A and spent the last two seasons in a brutal district. They have some good players returning and this match-up will definitely impact the playoff seeding.
Oct. 11th - Choctaw
Oct. 17th - AT Northwest Classen
Oct. 25th - AT Piedmont
Nov. 1st - Putnam City
Nov. 8th - Stillwater
- In the final week of the regular season, Southmoore will play host to a Stillwater team that has been right at the top of 6A-2 over the last several seasons. They won the 2022 state championship and made it back to the state championship game a year ago. By the time week ten rolls around, Southmoore is going to know exactly where they stand in the district standings and will know what they need for seeding purposes. This is the ultimate measuring stick game with the top of 6A-2.

NOTABLE

The Sabercats are hopeful that moving from 6A-1 to 6A-2 will lead to not only punching their ticket to the playoffs, but they are hoping to find success in the postseason once they get there. Southmoore made the playoffs for the first time in program history back in 2009. They would go on a run all the way to the Class 6A semifinals before losing to Jenks. Since that playoff appearance, the Sabercats have made six playoff appearances but they are 0-6 during that stretch. When Class 6A split into two divisions, Southmoore would make three straight playoff appearances in the first three years of the split. They've only made one appearance since that streak and it came in the Covid-impacted season where everyone made the playoffs. This fall, Southmoore looks to earn their way into the playoffs and make some noise once they get there.
