The Plainview Indians came into the 2023 season looking for redemption. They would go 5-5 in 2022 and missed out on the playoffs for the first time in nearly two decades. Unfortunately, history would repeat itself as the Indians struggled in arguably the toughest district in Class 3A and definitely one of the tougher districts in the state. Things started well in the first half of the regular season. They went 4-1 during the first half and the only loss was to 4A's ranked Newcastle. They took care of business in the other four games but the real tests were about to come in the second half. The Indians fell to Lone Grove in a week six heartbreaker. That would start a three-game losing streak as they lost to Pauls Valley and Heritage Hall. The Indians would bounce back in week nine with a big win over a Marlow team that actually made a run to the 3A semifinals. But in the regular season finale, they lost to Sulphur and the season came to an end at 5-5 for the second straight year. The 2023 Plainview Indians were a team that had some high highs and some low lows and now, they look to return to that consistent winning that we've gotten used to seeing over the last two decades. One thing that points towards Plainview having that bounceback season is the experience they have returning as they have more of it compared to last year's team. The road back to the playoffs and competing begins now.

2024 OUTLOOK

15 starters return for the Indians in 2024 and when you start talking about this year's team, that experience and overall talent level is a major reason why we think they are a top ten team coming into the year. Plainview cracks the top ten of our preseason 3A rankings and they'll look to back up the hype this fall with an offense that brings back seven starters from last year's team. And this offense was an underrated part of this team last year. Despite missing the playoffs, the offense was a unit that averaged 35 points per game and if they can have that same kind of production, or even expand on it, they'll definitely be one of the playoff contenders and even more. And when you combine the offense with a defense that brings back eight starters, we think the Indians are primed for that bounce back season. The defense gave up a little more than 20 points per game last season and just like the offense, it wouldn't be surprising to see this defense show improvement this fall and if that's the case, they should have a successful 2024 campaign. Then you look at the schedule and while the district is going to be tough, it also doesn't look like the gauntlet that last year's district turned out to be. That was a district where there was always going to be one or two good teams on the outside looking in. Unfortunately, that included Plainview. This year, we think the Indians should definitely crack the top four and if they get into the playoffs, they have a history of making some noise once they're in.

On a team full of talented seniors, Plainview also has some juniors to keep an eye on coming into this season. Leading the way in that department is [player_tooltip player_id='1256011' first='Jhett' last='Price'] and there's a variety of things that he does very well. Price will be a starter on both sides of the ball and if we had to categorize him, he would be called a “jumbo” athlete where he's just as comfortable on defense as a linebacker as he is on offense as a tight end or hybrid fullback. Price is a name to know in the state's 2026 class and we're looking forward to seeing what kind of impact he will have on both sides of the ball. All signs point to Price becoming a breakout star in 3A football this season.

Plainview's offense definitely has the potential of being one of the more underrated units in 3A football this season. And a big reason behind that is the experience they have coming back up front on the line of scrimmage. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1345893' first='Keegan' last='Williams'] is arguably the top returning offensive lineman and this is a group that has some talent to go along with the experience. We're interested to watch Williams go to work and pave the way for Plainview's skill guys. They don't have as much experience in the backfield so having an established guy like Williams upfront should pay off in a big way. He's going to be a name to watch as well in the state's 2025 class.

Plainview has had no shortage of playmakers come through at the wide receiver and defensive back positions. We've seen guys like Blake Nowell, Morgan Pearson and this year's team with [player_tooltip player_id='288687' first='Shepherd' last='Sisemore'] on both sides of the ball. Sisemore has been a guy that has been on our radar for a long time now and he has backed up the hype with his play on offense and what he's been able to do on defense. Now, Sisemore looks to go out on top and finish off his high school career by leading the Indians back to competing in Class 3A. Earlier this year, Sisemore announced his commitment to the Air Force and we're fired up to see what he has in store for his senior season.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1345895' first='Toby' last='Stedmen'] was on our radar at this time last year but we didn't expect him to have the kind of season he ended up having. The Plainview standout would end up leading the team in tackles and returns to lead a defense that brings back eight starters on that side of the ball. And the linebacker group on this team is very talented coming into this season. Stedmen not only has the ability to dominate on the offensive side of the ball, he could have another breakout moment this fall at the running back position. Stedmen could end up being the top replacement for a graduating Blake Stewart, who was incredibly productive at the running back and linebacker position.

Sept. 6th - Lone Grove
Sept. 13th - Bells, TX.
Sept. 20th - AT Davis
- In the final non-district game, Plainview will hit the road and take on one of the top teams in 2A-2 football this season. They'll travel to face a Davis team that expects to contend for the state championship in their class. These two teams haven't met in well over a decade. They were district opponents off and on during the 2000's. Now, both teams are going to be looking to finish up non-district play with a win and take that momentum into district play the following week.
Sept. 27th - AT Purcell
Oct. 4th - Pauls Valley
- In week five, we reach the halfway point of the regular season and one of the bigger games for the Indians. They'll host a Pauls Valley team that is a top five team in the class coming into this season. Historically, Plainview has been able to dominate this series but lately, the Panthers have had their number. Pauls Valley has won each of the last two meetings and this game will definitely have major playoff implications. The winner here could be in the driver's seat for the district crown.
Oct. 10th - AT Star Spencer
Oct. 17th - Heritage Hall
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Plainview will host a Heritage Hall team that has been right at the top of Class 3A over the last decade. They were almost not going to be district foes but after the emergency redistricting shuffle in April, Heritage Hall came back down from 4A to 3A and landed in Plainview's district. The Indians will look to turn things around in this series and when you're talking about being the best in the class, you have to beat the best and Heritage Hall is one of those teams.
Oct. 25th - AT Anadarko
Nov. 1st - North Rock Creek
Nov. 8th - AT Kingfisher

After back to back seasons where the Indians finished with a 5-5 record and sat on the outside looking in on the playoffs, this Plainview team is hungrier than ever to make it back to the postseason. And it makes sense when you look at the history of Plainview football. Despite the last two seasons, Plainview is still one of the more consistent winners since the turn of the century. They made 18 consecutive trips to the playoffs and one thing we like about that streak is the streak within the streak. In 12 straight playoff trips from 2010-2021, Plainview won at least one playoff game. During that streak they also made two appearances in the state championship game. Now, they focus on starting another streak. The road to get back to the playoffs will be a tough one but history suggests that if they get there, they'll be successful again.
