The Meeker Bulldogs had been building towards a 2023 season that saw them bounce back in a major way. After two straight years with 3-7 seasons in 2021 and 2022, this was a team that had been through the fire, experienced the growing pains and were ready to get back to winning games on Friday night. What followed was a roller coaster season that ended with a winning record and a trip back to the playoffs. But the path to get there was not an easy one. In fact, Meeker would have to suffer through alternating wins and losses for the first seven weeks before they would find their groove in mid-October. Starting in week one, they lost and followed that up with a win. That cycle would continue for the first seven games and they were 3-4 heading into the final three weeks. Simply put, they needed to win games or they were going to miss out on the playoffs. They would respond by beating Luther, Crossings Christian and Star Spencer to punch their ticket to the playoffs. They would finish as the three seed in their district and went on the road and upset Oklahoma Christian School 27-14. That set up a second round showdown with defending champion Washington. The season would come to an end after they lost 56-7 but let's face it, this is a Washington team that has won 30 straight games and 44 of their last 45. Not many teams have been able to keep up with the Warriors. Meeker finished the year at 7-5 and while they were hurt by the graduation of some key pieces, they also have enough firepower returning to make a run in the new Class 2A-2 when this season begins.

2024 OUTLOOK

The Bulldogs come into this season as a top ten team in our preseason rankings for Class 2A-2 And when you look at this team under a microscope, it's pretty easy to see why. The offense will need to replace the majority of their starters but one spot they are good at is quarterback. The Bulldogs will bring back one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in Class 2A-2 and he's going to also benefit from having some talent around him at the skill positions and up front on the line of scrimmage. All in all, the Bulldogs bring back just four starters on the offensive side of the ball and they'll need to find a replacement to a very productive and versatile running back but they think they have that answer. Defensively, the Bulldogs will have five starters back and on that side of the ball, you look at the front seven specifically and see some guys that can absolutely play. One linebacker was one of the top freshmen in the state last season and he's back looking to lead this Meeker defense. Shortly before spring ball, the Bulldogs were hit with a curveball as head coach Maverick Lang returned to southeastern Oklahoma to become the head coach at Broken Bow. The Bulldogs would elevate their defensive coordinator Allen Potts to head coach and while it's not the ideal way to take over a program, at least it's a guy who's familiar with the program and knows what this team has coming back when you start looking at the roster. This team has talent on both sides of the ball and there's a lot of potential to make a run in 2024.

Senior standout [player_tooltip player_id='1153931' first='Manny' last='Saavedra'] is a wide receiver prospect that we're excited to watch this season. He would end up leading the team in receiving yards and touchdowns and he was third on the team in receptions. That tells us that Saavedra was a big play guy that would make the most of his opportunities when they came to him. And the guys who were first and second on the team in receptions have graduated so that opens the door for Saavedra to be the hands-down leader of this receiver group and the top target in the passing game. And don't overlook his production on defense as well. He ended up being fourth on the team in tackles last year.

We mentioned earlier in the preview that the Bulldogs had a freshman linebacker that quickly emerged as one of the more productive freshmen in the state, regardless of class. [player_tooltip player_id='1169619' first='Roanon' last='Wolford'] is that guy and we're fired up to see what he ends up being at the varsity level. He definitely has the genetics for it. He's not the first Wolford to tear it up for the Bulldogs. Nearly ten years ago, they had Adrian Wolford who would sign with Texas A&M out of high school. For Roanon, he's looking to leave no doubt that he's one of, if not the very best linebacker in Class 2A-2 this season. Last year, he eclipsed the 100 tackle mark and he's hungry for more in 2024.

We think that Meeker senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='598830' first='Treyvon' last='Compton'] has the potential to be the best dual-threat quarterback in Class 2A-2 football this season and one of the best in the state. He put up monster numbers last season as a junior and there's no doubt that he's going to attempt to exceed them in 2024. As a passer, Compton would finish with over 2,700 yards and 25 touchdowns while completing 62 percent of his passes. As a runner, Compton would also add over 700 yards on the ground and ten touchdowns. It wouldn't be surprising to see his passing and rushing stats go up in 2024. Compton is clearly a great athlete and wants to take this team to new heights.

Sept. 6th - AT Pawhuska
- It's not the easiest season opener but Meeker will definitely challenge themselves when they hit the road to northern Oklahoma to face Pawhuska. The Huskies are a top five team in Class A-1 coming into this season. They have an experienced offense returning and that will definitely challenge the Bulldogs and their new starters on defense. We've seen what Pawhuska can be with some experience and talent on offense and we could end up seeing quite a bit of fireworks in this one.
Sept. 12th - Harrah JV
Sept. 20th - AT Prague
Sept. 27th - AT Luther
Oct. 4th - Stroud
- After back to back road games, Meeker returns home for arguably the toughest district game of the year. They'll host Stroud in week five and these two teams are the top two ranked teams in this district going into the 2024 season. We'll also see a clash of styles in this one as Stroud has an excellent and productive running game while Meeker can be balanced and attack in a variety of ways. Both of these teams expected to be in Class A-1 this fall but now they're in the same 2A-2 district.
Oct. 11th - AT Newkirk
Oct. 17th - Casady
Oct. 25th - AT Hennessey
Nov. 1st - Alva
- In week nine, Meeker will play host to Alva in a game that will definitely have playoff implications as both teams expect to be in the mix this season. And Alva is a program that is in a similar position to Meeker coming into this fall. Suddenly in May, they lost their head coach and had to go in a different direction and that's not unlike what happened this offseason at Meeker. For the Bulldogs, this is an opportunity to take another step towards a playoff spot or even more.
Nov. 8th - Kellyville

Meeker was one of many schools in Oklahoma that got thrown into a whirlwind back in April. When several Oklahoma City private schools won a decision against the OSSAA, that sparked an emergency redistricting shuffle and there were several schools that not only ended up changing districts, they changed classes altogether. And Meeker was one of those schools. Originally, the Bulldogs were slated to be in Class A-1 and they would have been one of the larger schools in the new class division. But after the shuffle, they find themselves as one of the smallest schools in the new Class 2A-2. On the plus side, Meeker will see some familiar names after being in Class 2A for a while now. It was the same story for new district foe Stroud as they were going to be in Class A-1 before the district reshuffle put them in the same class and district.
