The Coweta Tigers had their streak of 10-win seasons come to an end in 2023 but they still had a successful 2023 campaign. They made it to the playoffs for the tenth consecutive year and would finish off the season with a 7-4 record. That came after dropping their first two games to 5A powerhouse Carl Albert and 4A powerhouse Wagoner. After the first two weeks, Coweta was 0-2 and it was time to bounce back for a team that did not have a lot of experience returning from their 2022 quarterfinal team. The Tigers turned it around with wins over Pryor and Glenpool before they entered a stretch of one possession games. Starting in week five with Sapulpa, Coweta had three straight games that were decided by seven points or less. They would go 3-0 in all three games and that included wins over McAlester and Durant. That set Coweta up to not only be a playoff team but still in contention for the district crown. The district title hopes were dashed in week nine when they lost to Del City but they would still finish second and get a first round playoff game at home. They hosted Collinsville and the Cardinals stunned Coweta in the fourth quarter with a game-tying touchdown and a field goal as time expired to end the season at 7-4. It was a heartbreaking end but Coweta can't hold their heads because the Tigers rallied from that 0-2 start to contend for the district title. That close game luck simply ran out in the playoffs.

2024 OUTLOOK

Coweta was incredibly young in a lot of areas last season and that remains the same this season. The Tigers have quite a few prospects in the 2027 class to look out for this season. But one thing we like about this year's team is the blend of youth and experience. As talented as their 2027 class looks, they also have quite a few seniors that bring a wealth of experience into this season. Coweta brings four starters back from last season's team and the strength will no doubt be in the run game. Despite losing a productive running back to graduation, they also bring back a young standout that earned playing time as a freshman. Coweta also has a decent amount of talent and experience on the offensive line to pave the way for that rushing attack this season. They need to figure out what they'll do at the quarterback position and new faces need to emerge at wide receiver. But while they figure that out, they can lean on the run game. Defensively, Coweta brings back five starters on that side of the ball. This is going to be a unit that should improve throughout the season. It's a similar story as the offensive side of the ball where Coweta has a good mix of young talent and veteran leadership. Now, the schedule could be the biggest hurdle for the 2024 Tigers. The first half of the schedule is a potential gauntlet and it'll make the second half of the season feel like a cake walk. If Coweta has a winning record by the time they reach the halfway mark, they will be in a great position heading deep into October.

Sophomore running back [player_tooltip player_id='474870' first='Brock' last='Heilmann'] was on our radar prior to his freshman season but we weren't sure just how much he would be used in 2023. Despite Coweta having a senior returning at running back, Heilmann earned significant playing time last season and Coweta's coaches have been incredibly high on him for over a year now. Heilmann backed up the hype with a freshman season that saw him run for nearly 500 yards and eight touchdowns. And that was with him not as the feature back in this Coweta offense. Heilmann is on our short list of players that could absolutely explode in 2024 with a bigger workload that could lead to more production.

Coweta senior offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1353211' first='Hunter' last='DeHues'] is going to be one of, if not the most experienced player on Coweta's roster this season. DeHues is going to be a three-year starter along the line of scrimmage and he has a high approval rating from the Coweta coaching staff. They believe he's the best offensive lineman on the team so when you combine the experience with the talent, he's going to be a name to watch on this Coweta team. One of the strengths in his game is, ironically, his strength. He's one of the strongest players on the roster and he uses that strength to manhandle his opponents. We think he'll be one of the more underrated OL in 5A this season.

Senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1353210' first='Parker' last='Dodson'] is a returning player on the Coweta defense that should be able to bring experience and production to that side of the ball. Dodson had a strong junior season that ended with postseason accolades. Dodson was named an all district linebacker and we're interested to see if he's able to match that or even surpass it during his senior season. Dodson brings a solid blend of speed and strength to the linebacker position and has to be looking forward to getting back on the field this season. Dodson was part of a Coweta defense last season that gave up around 20 points per game in 2023 and they will want to improve that this fall.

Sept. 6th - AT Wagoner
- The annual Highway 51 rivalry clash between Coweta and Wagoner will kick off the 2024 season for the Tigers. These two have been playing each other every year since 2014. It's been a series that has been largely dominated by Wagoner but the Tigers have been able to claw out some wins here in recent memory. They lost to Wagoner 24-7 last season but had won the previous two meetings. Wagoner is once again one of the strongest contenders in Class 4A going into this season.
Sept. 13th - Fort Smith Northside, AR.
Sept. 20th - AT Prairie Grove, AR.
Sept. 27th - McAlester
- District play opens up in week four and Coweta begins their two week gauntlet to kick off the district slate. They'll host McAester in week four and this has become quite the rivalry over the last five years. It has been chippy, incredibly competitive and both teams feel like they have something to prove coming into this season. Coweta has beaten McAlester in each of the last two seasons and have taken three of the last four. That includes last season's dramatic 28-27 victory over the Buffaloes.
Oct. 4th - AT Bishop Kelley
Oct. 11th - Shawnee
Oct. 17th - Edison
Oct. 24th - AT Durant
Nov. 1st - AT Booker T Washington
- For the first time in nearly 15 years, Booker T Washington is back in Class 5A and we get a renewal of this match-up that we haven't seen in nearly two decades. In week nine, Coweta will travel to face Booker T Washington and there's no doubt in our mind that this match-up will have an impact on the playoff seeding as both teams will be chasing playoff spots. By the time week nine rolls around, this Coweta team should be clicking and will know what they need to do in order to secure their spot in the postseason.
Nov. 8th - East Central

NOTABLE

When you look at the history of Coweta football, you can certainly make the argument that they are in their greatest run in program history when it comes to winning games and making it to the playoffs. Last season was the tenth consecutive year that Coweta has punched their ticket to the playoffs and that's the best stretch in program history. The only other candidate for “best stretch” would be their stretch from 1994-1999 when they made the playoffs each year and also made two semifinal appearances. What we like about Coweta's current streak is not only are they winning games at a high rate and making it to the playoffs, they are pretty consistent once they get there. More times than not during this streak, Coweta has won at least one game. Now, they haven't been able to get over the quarterfinal hump but if Coweta makes it to their 11th straight playoff, they'll try to knock down that quarterfinal wall that's been stopping them in the last decade.
