BLUFFTON | After a fourth-place finish in Region VII-4A and a 4-7 record for a second straight season under .500 overall, May River have made changes to their gameday approach.

Head coach Richard Bonneville has installed a new offense and has gone about “fixing up the defense and squaring away the little details that got us hurt last year.”

Starting offensive lineman William Bonneville (pictured) also pointed to another specific area he and his fellow seniors believe is in long need of shoring up.

“I've seen in the past few years what a lack of leadership has done to our team,” he said. “I feel that's possibly detrimental this year because we need to have real leadership if we want to have a chance to succeed.”

The Sharks will once again put the ball in the hands of [player_tooltip player_id='1360121' first='Tanner' last='Macy']. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound rising senior quarterback accounted for over 2,200 total yards and 22 touchdowns.

His style of play should fit in with to the Wing T/Flexbone offense being implemented this season. Rising senior Gage Duncan, the team's leading wide receiver last season, will play an even more active role in the offense at running back with [player_tooltip player_id='1592214' first='Andrew' last='Johnson'].

The offensive line returns three starters in rising seniors Bonneville, Beau Gwynn and Nathan Vu. The defensive line has one lone returning starter in defensive end Devin Ryan and will be joined by rising juniors Charlie Crace and Sean-Zadroga McNulty.

With inside linebackers [player_tooltip player_id='1575340' first='Hudson' last='Flanagan'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1575350' first='Ethan' last='Sprinkle'], May River returns two of its leading tacklers. The secondary is athletic and experienced with safeties [player_tooltip player_id='1575332' first='AJ' last='Hamilton'] and Will Bostwick and cornerback Pete Nodelman.

Hamilton is also a “dangerous” kick returner, according to the head coach, to go with three blocked kicks last season. Duncan and Nodelman will also return kicks for the Sharks.

May River moves over to Region VI with fellow in-county rivals Beaufort, Bluffton and Hilton Head Island and Lowcountry schools Bishop England and Colleton County. The Sharks have also adopted a motivational hashtag phrase #EmbracetheChaos.

“It's a lot of familiar faces,” said Richard Bonneville about the region foes. “So, we've got to keep the rivalries going and get on the right side of them for the 2024 season.”

STARS SET TO SHINE

Shifting to the Wing T/Flexbone offense should fit his strengths.

William Bonneville OL, 2025 – A three-year letterman and Region VII-4A first-team selection. At 6-foot-2 and 280 pounds, the right tackle more than holds his own with quick football and has improved his pass blocking. He has an offer from Erskine College.

Gage Duncan RB 2025 – An All-Region VII-4A selection, the 5-foot-9, 150-pound rising senior was the team's leading receiver with 32 receptions for 422 yards and seven touchdowns. Look for the Sharks to utilize his running ability in the Wing T/Flexbone offense.

FILM REVIEW

[player_tooltip player_id='1575332' first='AJ' last='Hamilton'] DB 2025 – At 6-foot-3 and 175 pounds, the rising senior covers the field like a blanket at safety. He's constantly focused on the football, looking to force a turnover or even grab an interception. He had 52 total tackles last season and plays with a physicality of a linebacker.

Hampden-Syndey has extended an offer to the rising senior. He will pair up with [player_tooltip player_id='1575332' first='AJ' last='Hamilton'] to form an active safety unit with the Sharks. He tallied 59 tackles and four pass breakups last season. During the off-season, he added 30 pounds to his 6-foot-2, 177-pound frame and has also worked to increase his speed.
