University Lab's quest for its seventh state championship continues after back-to-back heartbreaking semifinal losses the past two seasons.

The Cubs return several of the key leaders from this past year's run and figure to be among the top contenders in Division-II Select — moving back up from Division-III the past two years.

U-High continues Prep Redzone Louisiana's series of "Offseason 3-2-1" spotlights looking at three key returning standouts, two notable breakout candidates and one underclassman to know sooner than later.

3 WELL-KNOWN RETURNERS

[player_tooltip player_id='144905' first='Keylan' last='Moses'] — 6-2, 215 LB/ATH — University Lab (2025)

Louisiana probably doesn't have a more well-known and productive returning star than Moses, who was squarely on many colleges' and fans' radar before even starting high school and now has three impactful seasons under his belt — two of which earned all-state honors — and has become one of the leading faces and voices of LSU's 2025 recruiting class. He may have his biggest two-way role to date on deck as a senior with many key teammates graduated from the defense, as well as the running back room.

[player_tooltip player_id='212343' first='Lamar' last='Brown'] — 6-4, 260 OL/DL — University Lab (2026)

Brown could have fit into any of these categories last year as a rising sophomore already gaining notoriety among the nation's top 2026 prospects. Like Moses, he was a two-way standout for the Cubs this past season and earned all-district first-team and all-state honorable-mention recognition for his breakout performance in the trenches. The offensive line should be one of the team's notable strength with several familiar faces including ranked seniors [player_tooltip player_id='913902' first='Jarvis' last='Brookshire'], [player_tooltip player_id='586165' first='John' last='Hebert'] and [player_tooltip player_id='291156' first='Preston' last='Jones'], plus Brown and fellow rising junior [player_tooltip player_id='401977' first='Lawson' last='Guidry']. And more below on the defense.

[player_tooltip player_id='734867' first='Emile' last='Picarella'] — 6-2, 215 QB — University Lab (2025)

The most heavily recruited quarterback prospect in Louisiana's rising senior class since his move into the state last summer from neighboring Mississippi. Picarella completed more than 70% of his passes for a school-record 34 touchdowns this past fall and now heads into senior season with a full year-plus in the program and with his coaches and teammates under his belt.

2 BREAKOUT CANDIDATES

[player_tooltip player_id='534094' first='Cayson' last='Hill'] — 6-2, 280 DL — University Lab (2025)

The defense should again be stout with the aforementioned Moses and Brown, highly ranked cornerback [player_tooltip player_id='291157' first='Jayden' last='Gloston'] and linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='144902' first='Alec' last='Haynes'] among the biggest names. Hill, the big defensive lineman, played well in his role this past season and should be an even more notable leader to watch as a senior.

[player_tooltip player_id='148530' first='Zay' last='Martin'] — 5-9, 150 WR — University Lab (2025)

Similarly, Martin played as a junior, but should be more of a focal point this fall as the Cubs replace a pair of particularly veteran and productive receivers from the 2024 class. Martin has had a strong offseason, including a monster showing at OT7 in late April, recent offers from Southeastern Louisiana and Central Michigan and interest from UTSA and others.

1 UNDERCLASSMAN TO KNOW

[player_tooltip player_id='485983' first='Emmanuel' last='Moses'] — 5-11, 180 DB/ATH — University Lab (2027)

and Patrick Patton — DB/WR — University Lab (2027)

The Cubs' secondary has enjoyed consistent waves of future college talent for at least a decade now, and the rising sophomore duo — both already on the radars of LSU and others, including early Texas A&M and Grambling State offers for the younger Moses — are among the next young prospects to know for the years to come.
