The circuit of back-to-back-to-back weekends on the road has come to a conclusion, as I was fortunate to attend Coach Nick Pennisi's PSR BIG Camp Series on Saturday, May 11. This marks the second year in a row that I covered the event. Pennisi has grown his significantly from last year. With over 400 prospects registered for the event, I had my work cut out for me to identify and scout some of the event's standouts. As I feverishly wrote notes, here are my scouting notes from the position group disclosed in this article's title.

Scout's Notebook: Offensive Line

[player_tooltip player_id='1279062' first='Aidan' last='Kelly'] of Wood-Ridge is the type of a dark horse prospect that has diamond in the rough upside for a lucky college program. At 6'4" 285lbs he certainly does not lack size, while his pedigree comes from a very solid program. Solid is perhaps the operative word to describe Kelly's game. Kelly has solid feet and a solid ability to bend. These two things, make him a solid prospect who gives a solid effort and solidifies Wood-Ridge's offensive line. With his valiant effort at PSR, expect Kelly to be a prospect to check in on after his first four games of the season..... [player_tooltip player_id='1271497' first='Matthew' last='Smith'] of perennial Group II power Rumson-Fair showed some power and technique throughout the afternoon. There were two plays that left an impression on me where Smith flexed his prowess. The first of which Smith masterfully countered the defender's hands. Smith attacked his elbows to neutralize his power than collapsed his shoulder to seal one edge as he rode the defensive lineman upfield. Later on in the day, Smith achieved upward body bend, jacking his assignment up in the process, only to dump and burry him moments later to complete the process of a good ole whoopin'.

[player_tooltip player_id='1258825' first='Mason' last='Lafond'] from St. Peter's Prep was actually a prospect that I previewed going into the event. Having done so I had a good sense of what Lafond's game, as he profiled as an outstanding interior lineman in pass protection. Only having an estimate of what made him so effective based off of film, my in-person evaluation as to what makes Lafond so effective is his feet - particularly how well he is able to transition them. Lafond can alternate between powering down, getting back to his kick step, and back easier than you can flip a light switch..... Montgomery might just have an anchor along the offensive trenches for the next few seasons in [player_tooltip player_id='1279063' first='Aidan' last='Mireider']. Mireider's, who will be a junior this fall, success beings in his stance - something I expect when a former offensive lineman is your head coach. Mireider also showcases the discipline and body control to stay low throughout the snap too, giving him an chance to always win the leverage battle. Lastly, Mireider is very aggressive coming off the ball. I would anticipate this translating to him weaponizing the snap count in real game scenarios.

From Central Regional, [player_tooltip player_id='606235' first='Robert' last='Mondella']'s stance is one that has balance, appropriate forward lean, and is square. Although he moves well in space, particularly when pulling and even cutting up as a wrapper, I want to see Mondella push off of his post foot when skip pulling a bit more. By driving off of that inside leg, he will gain more power and get to the spot more quickly..... The Elizabeth Minutemen sent [player_tooltip player_id='1279064' first='Joel' last='Lopez'] to compete this last weekend. A bit on the shorter side relative to the massive human beings in attendance, Lopez did more than hold his own. What me may lack in size, he made up for in movement, technique, and with his hands. Lopez showed that he takes short, choppy steps at both the first and second levels of a defense. In doing so, this prevents him from ever losing balance and always being in a breakdown position to obstruct pursuing defenders. Relatedly, he moves well along the trenches, particularly when powering down. Lastly, he is aggressive and wishes to annex the neutral zone as his to own, while he works to refit his hands in order to accomplish just that.

Like Lafond, big [player_tooltip player_id='531992' first='Connor' last='Long'] of Bergen Catholic is a prospect I had a pretty good sense of heading into last Saturday. One nuance of Long's game that I was able to notice live was how well he grabs to control his matchup. Mindful of his hand placement, they were reasonably inside the defenders' body; however, what impressed me what how the current freshman used his massive paws to grab cloth and use his upper body strength to control matchups of just about any age..... Coming up from Burlington Township was [player_tooltip player_id='1274053' first='Xavier' last='Wimberly']. My second in-person look at Wimberly in as many weekends, he put forth another effort that demonstrated coachability and improvement as the day wore on. One thing I would implore Wimberly to be conscientious of when he should unhand his matchup. In doing so, he should work to play basketball defense, staying in front of his assignment, as he works to continue being a barrier between the defense and the quarterback without drawing a penalty.
