The circuit of back-to-back-to-back weekends on the road has come to a conclusion, as I was fortunate to attend Coach Nick Pennisi's PSR BIG Camp Series on Saturday, May 11. This marks the second year in a row that I covered the event. Pennisi has grown his significantly from last year. With over 400 prospects registered for the event, I had my work cut out for me to identify and scout some of the event's standouts. As I feverishly wrote notes, here are my scouting notes from the position group disclosed in this article's title.

Scout's Notebook: Defensive Line

Coming up from Allentown was [player_tooltip player_id='1287235' first='Christian' last='Macaluso']. The interior defensive lineman showed that he is more than capable of rushing the passer. During one rep that I saw Macaluso win, the offensive lineman quick set him just a bit. Macaluso, unfazed by this, stacked a double chop move with a double swipe as he blew past his matchup for the easy victory..... Manchester's [player_tooltip player_id='1287238' first='Kurtis' last='Mayer'], who profiles as more of an edge rusher, demonstrated that he has two of the most fundamental pass rush moves down: the rip and the swim. Mayer went to the swim on one rep, hitting it masterfully, and then getting level with what would have been the quarterback's level in order to simulate targeting his back shoulder. When Mayer executed the rip you were able to tell that it is a move he has been taught, practices, and uses quite often as the motion appeared very natural.

Hailing from Hammonton, [player_tooltip player_id='1287236' first='Devaughn' last='Colter'] looked like one of the more athletic defensive line prospects in attendance. Colter moved very well in close proximity to bags, cones, and his opponent when working his pass rush. Additionally, he got downhill very well. I realize that holding penalties are largely subjective; however, Colter was one of the few prospects who drew a clear-as-day hold on his matchup..... [player_tooltip player_id='1287239' first='Will' last='Maloof'], with room to grow in his frame, has tremendous size to play anywhere on defense. The 6'4" 205lb prospect from St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City has tremendous power. Two instances of his power, however, shined above all the rest. The first time I saw Maloof work he used the long arm to, literally, walk his matchup backwards into the quarterback. During this spin Maloof was lower than his opponent, kept his feet buzzing, and fired off the ball. Later on, Maloof got home on the classic spin & pin move, attacking the inside gap. Typically not a powerful move, Maloof managed to fling the offensive tackle forward as he connected in a forceful pin to his back. It was really impressive.

For an interior tackle, [player_tooltip player_id='1214399' first='Daniel' last='Pagan'] moved awfully well. The Montclair product demonstrated solid ability to change direction and get down hill quickly. For whatever reason, just about every movement the 265lber made appeared fluid and seamless..... For the second time in three weeks I had the chance to see St. Joseph Academy's [player_tooltip player_id='1264785' first='Raymond' last='Brown']. For my money, Brown got home on a very technically advanced and athletic move. I noted that Brown worked an upward lift of his opponent's arm, only to bend and dip under it. This showcase of both power and athleticism led to him easily winning that rep.

I close out my defensive line coverage with, perhaps, the most noteworthy prospect to compete on the day - [player_tooltip player_id='819155' first='Jayden' last='Loftin'] from Somerville. With somewhere in the mid-to-high-teens worth of offers at hand that spread at least four of the five Power 5 conferences, it would seem as though Loftin only has something to lose while competing at this type of event. Be that as it may, what I truly appreciate about Loftin the most is that disregards such commentary and works tirelessly at his craft through competition. Loftin has a vast repertoire of pass rush moves that he uses to get after the quarterback. Power is clearly a part of his game too. Loftin's single-arm swipe generated more force and violence than a lot of double-arm swipes of his contemporaries. When he gets off the ball you can see that he brings his hips through the majority of the times. This lower-half snap allowed him to give a sudden jolt to one poor offensive lineman. As that rep progressed, Loftin attacked his chest, grabbed him, pulled to snatch, and easily swam past him. Loftin then later hit a very agile move where I saw him take the inside rush lane that was given to him. What made this play so special is that has his matchup worked to power down to protect the inside, Loftin then worked back to the outside and extended on him. This showed that Loftin can converted speed to power and is athletic enough to work outside-in-and-back-outside.
