The pair built a nice relationship when Mateos was in Waco. However, in December Matoes was hired as the new offensive line coach at Arkansas, a member of the SEC.
After that, it was probably only a matter of time before Handy visited Fayetteville and was offered by the Razorbacks.
The moment finally came on Wednesday.
Handy was offered by Arkansas during his visit to campus. It’s his first SEC offer. The Razorbacks join a lengthy list of Division I schools that have offered the 6-foot-6, 285-pound Handy.
“Coach Mateos and I have had a relationship for a long time, so we already had a great connection,” Handy told Prep Redzone New Mexico on Wednesday. “It was definitely a factor. He is a great coach. I knew I was going to be in the area for spring break and I had that relationship with him, so I knew Arkansas was a place that would be an easy visit to set up.”
Handy toured the Arkansas campus and football facilities and met the Razorback coaches. Because of his already established relationship with Mateo, Handy said Arkansas is probably near the top of his list of favorites.
“It was a great visit,: Handy said. “We saw the facilities and toured the campus. I do think it is one of my top offers that I am considering. Northwest Arkansas is a very pretty area.”
Handy recently visited Texas Tech and TCU, two other Power 5 schools that have offered. He was offered by Oregon State and Georgia Tech in March.
Handy told Prep Redzone New Mexico that as of right now he has finalized five official visits:
April 26-28: Baylor
May 31-June 1: Arizona State
June 7-9: TCU
June 14-16: Texas Tech
June 22-23: Utah
Will Handy take an official visit to Arkansas? Probably.
