Here’s a look at six standouts from around the state still available on the defensive side of the ball to become late steals for the schools that land them.
Swazy Carheel Swazy Carheel 6'3" | 230 lbs | DL Many | 2024 State LA — 6-3, 235 DL — Many
A physical wrecking ball of a defensive lineman who showed flashes of dominance, Carheel was one of the state’s most heavily recruited prospects in the 2024 class for a stretch earlier in the cycle. Carheel is Louisiana’s highest-ranked remaining available prospect in the senior class with notable upside for a school to potentially make a late move on him.
Tyler Knox Tyler Knox 5'11" | 165 lbs | DB Woodlawn (Baton Rouge) | 2024 State LA — 5-11, 165 DB — Woodlawn (Baton Rouge)
The Panthers’ cornerback has been highlighted on both Prep Redzone Louisiana and Prep Hoops during the past two years as a multisport standout with bouncy athleticism and good ball skills. He became one of the program’s top returning athletes this year after the graduation of its loaded 2023 class. Navarro College and Texas Permian Basin have been among programs in most recent contact.
Ejoshua “E.J.” McDonald — 6-2, 180 DB — Captain Shreve
McDonald racked up interceptions and accolades left and right during an impressive senior season on the football field — from six picks, a blocked kick, 44 tackles, district MVP and all-metro and all-state selections — and began garnering some Group of Five interest and a Centenary offer in the process. And a strong spring on the basketball court continues this week with the No. 3-seeded Gators set to host a Division-I quarterfinal Friday.
Louis Phillips Louis Phillips 6'4" | 240 lbs | DL Dunham | 2024 State LA — 6-4, 240 DL — Dunham
Among the leaders of this year’s Tigers defense and team that remained among the top contenders in its division after the graduation of its own memorable 2023 class, Phillips is a strong and relentless presence on the defensive front with enough athleticism and closing speed to continue his disruptive playmaking in the trenches at the next level. Earlier this month, he visited Midwestern State and earned an offer.
Tydrick Stewart Tydrick Stewart 6'1" | 220 lbs | LB Terrebonne | 2024 State LA — 6-1, 220 LB — Terrebonne
One of Louisiana’s seniors who saw his recruitment slowed a bit by injury this past offseason, Stewart came back with 40 tackles, including seven for loss and five sacks, plus 26 pressures and four fumble recoveries in seven games. He has consistently ranked among the top 100 to 150 prospects in his class in the talent-rich state on Prep Redzone Louisiana’s updates throughout the cohort’s high school career. Culver-Stockton has been among the programs in the mix late.
Tai Terrell Tai Terrell 6'0" | 175 lbs | DB Destrehan | 2024 State LA — 6-0, 175 DB — Destrehan
An often-overlooked talent on a loaded Wildcats squad the past two years, Terrell is a good-looking cornerback who was a key member of the team’s second during a 2022 state championship season and 2023 quarterfinal run with notable track athleticism in the jumping and relay events.
