The gold standard for rushing excellence has been the 1000-yard season for years. Here is part one of three stories focusing on stat-stuffing running backs who are coming back for more.
2627 rushing yards 36 rushing touchdownsrnHungerholt is a long, lean athlete who is a true dual-threat quarterback. He has a big arm, but he makes this list because of the ability to run the read option and pick up yards on the ground. His long striding style allows him to eat up big chunks of yardage in the open field. With his upright running style, like most quarterbacks, it doesn’t look like he should have the balance and cutting ability he does have, but he can make quick cuts and bounce off tacklers. His footwork makes him a nightmare for pass rushers – both on improvised runs and finding time to throw.
Highlights
1635 rushing yards 22 rushing touchdownsrnBuilt low to the ground, Eull has outstanding feet – especially in one-cut-and-go situations. His vision allows him to read his blocking, find an opening, and explode through the hole. His ability to put his foot in the ground and get up to full speed in one step separates him from defenders and most running backs. Eull’s quick feet and close-to-the-ground running style make the sophomore tough for defenders to square him up and get a solid hit on him.
1577 rushing yards 27 rushing touchdownsrnBeiningen excels in small spaces. When his blocking breaks down, he can make multiple, quick cuts at the line of scrimmage. When he starts running downhill, he can cut without decelerating. He is a more powerful runner than his frame suggests. Beiningen has enough strength to bounce off tacklers and power his way through arm tackles. He has solid speed, but his vision in the open field and full-speed cutting ability are his biggest open-field skills.
1562 rushing yards 16 touchdownsrnJohnson has a great combination of speed and quickness. There are faster backs and guys with quicker feet, but his combination of both makes him one of the more effective backs in the state. His vision allows him to make things happen at the line of scrimmage and especially shows up – his speed included – when he bounces runs to the outside. At the second level, he gets separation both with his speed and with the subtle cuts he makes while at full speed. Johnson will not make a living bowling over defenders, but he has enough power and balance to bounce off most arm tackles.

1425 rushing yards 21 touchdownsrnLangama’s senior year will be must-see TV based on his junior year. No running back I have seen in this class has the combination of speed and cutting ability that the Crimson junior has. His straight-line speed is no joke, and he has some of the best footwork in this class. His film is littered with defenders grasping at air because Langama had just put on a move in the open field to make a defender look silly. He is not just a scat back. He makes plays in the passing game and will blow through arm tackles and smaller defenders.
