Two of the more storied small school programs across the region finally hit pay-dirt this weekend at the state level, with both the Mustangs and Wildcats winning CIF state titles in their respective divisions in Pasadena. The Mustangs have been to three section title games in a row, and lost to Argonaut in 2021 in the Norcal regionals after beating St. Helena in the NCS finals. This season, they knocked off Division I powerhouse Palo Alto from the CCS in their Norcal regional bowl game, and put Salesian College Prep in scrimmage in the NCS Title game back on Thanksgiving weekend. The Wildcats on the other hand, have had a bit of a slower rise to the top over the past several seasons, and have not been to the section title game since their NCS title win over the Mustangs in 2013 in Humboldt county. Ferndale was able to knock off Portola in their Norcal regional game, and get a come from behind win this past weekend against Fairfax on Friday afternoon. Both small school programs are two of the best Norcal has to offer, and will look to reload for the 2024 season with both teams returning tons of production on both sides of the ball.
