TALLAHASSEE – For the second straight year, the Hawthorne Hornets are the 1Rural state champion.
On Thursday night, head coach Cornelius Ingram and his team won for the 25th straight time and 35th in the past 36 games when they beat second year head coach Price Harris and Madison County 22-13 at Bragg Memorial Stadium at Florida A&M University.
In moving to 13-0, the Hornets capped off the first day of the 2023 Florida High School Athletic Association finals.
Madison County (10-2) broke out on top first when Varian Terry scored from five yards out at :27 mark of the first quarter. The point after failed and it was 6-0.
Hawthorne came right back to tie the contest at 6 when Alvon Isaac Alvon Isaac 5'9" | 170 lbs | ATH Hawthorne | 2024 FL took it in from the 8 at the 7:19 mark of the second quarter.
On the next drive, Madison County went up 13-6 when Terry exploded 99 yards with 4:32 left.
Right before the half, the Hornets tied things up at 13-13 when C.J. Ingram C.J. Ingram 6'0" | 155 lbs | QB Hawthorne | 2025 FL completed a scoring pass to Matthew Daniels from the 24 at the :51 mark.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Hornets went ahead 15-13 when they pinned the Cowboys for a safety at 9:30.
Hawthorne added to the lead with 2:09 left when John Christian fumbled and Naziy Gent recovered to extend the lead.

For Madison County, Terry finished with 111 yards and two scores and Za’vion Bryant had 67 yards.
